The pattern is basically a map and you get to decide which route to take, personalizing for your own fit preferences. I wouldn't give up on sweaters. What do you want to have when you are done? Mitts or mittens, a shawl, slippers? Or if you want to try apparel you could start with a vest (quicker no sleeves). Or baby clothes like Diana suggested.
