Shiny, I think fit is definitely a factor. The very first pair of glads I ever tried were huge around the ankle and just didn't look right. After that I was a little worried that glads with ankle straps would not work for me in general. But I kept trying and found another pair that was almost identical to that first pair but actually fit at the ankle and voila, I've never looked back.

Yesterday I tried on some gladiator flats, the kind that go up around the ankle. They were white with delicate straps that had pewter studs all over - really cute! DH and I decided the reason they didn't work on me - completely stumpified my legs - wasn't that they had ankle straps, but rather, because the straps around the ankles were too loose. It was like my ankles were drowning in them and even though the shoes technically fit, they looked way too big on me. So I am thinking that could be one factor?

I love my gladiators- flat and heeled. I don't know why, but my flat glads make me feel really sexy. I was trying to figure out how to describe the differences between the cage heels and glads. I think that there are two separate types of gladiators- ones with a vertical strap running the length of the foot with horizontal off shoots, and one with just the horizontal straps. I've seen versions that only cover the foot portion, and those that go all the way up to the ankle (and beyond). Cage heels usually stop at the top of the foot, and enclose most of the foot in the cage- which can be strappy or more of a cutwork design. I've seen versions with lacings and buckles, ankle straps and sling backs. I particularly like the nude cage heels- like Kristen's. I don't know the secret to making these things work- I think it has to be a "package deal".

Oh, Kristen, I adored your nude cage heels! To my eye, that's the only way to do it, with a nude rather than black. Unless you are a supermodel with endless legs?

Heh, no, they will only get worn with skirts and maybe dark jeans with a super-long hem (which I do not own these days).

Kristen's nude cage heels were stunning examples of a good cage heel.
Rockin! I doubt she would sport with shorts or a true mini though.
Typically, it's a beefed up gladiator on a high heel. A gladiator would be a flat sandal.

I think the two are definitely cousins. My initial response is that cage heel just look more like a cage. A better attempt although I'm no expert is that I think the cage heels have straps that are more vertical to the ankle while gladiators have more horizontal straps at the ankle. They are both very strappy all over the foot though.

It makes sense that vertical straps would be more elongating.

I really like the cage heel look, better than the gladiator, but I don't know if I can explain why. I just bought a pair of nude vage heels, and although I'm still not sure if the heel height will work for me, I am crazy about how long and sleek they make my legs look. I didn't try the black ones, so I can't say if they would make them look stumpy.

What is the difference between these two?

I ask because my DH and I were people watching this weekend, and we were wondering. He does not like this look - he pointed out that it makes even tall women look stumpy. We saw a woman, for example, who was probably 5'10 and tottering around the city streets in 4-inch heels and short-shorts. (Kind of a ridiculous outfit for a cobblestone street, but I digress). Her shoes went up around her ankles and managed to stumpify her legs - despite being heels and her legs being so long. I think if they had been nude instead of black, it would've worked better.

I do like the look - well, I think it is the cage heel that appeals to me more than gladiator - but I may be mixing the two up, hence my initial question. I just don't know how anyone pulls it off, with shorts/clams/skirts/dresses. What is the secret?
