I vote no. This may just be me, but I get vastly more mileage out of my brown boots, rather than black boots. Because I wear a lot of black, and adding black boots and tights becomes overwhelming and funeral-looking. I vastly prefer to add brown boots to black outfits (LBDs, black pants, black skirts), and brown boots to jeans.

I do wear my black boots -- don't get me wrong! I wear them with skirts and dresses that are NOT black. Like charcoal gray sweater dress -- but brown would work perfectly well with that. Or a color-block dress that has black in it. I have two pairs of black boots; one is heeled, suede, and dressy. The other is flat. It's my only pair of flat boots. So I do wear them when I want flats, but if they were brown, I'd very likely prefer and opt for that. It's a more interesting look.

Just my two cents!

I like K can shop's suggestion. That's probably the route I would go. I would just make sure I didn't leave them boxed past the time limit to return them... obviously :)

That said, I happen to own two pairs of last year's version of those exact boots and I LOVE them both. I have black and brown. I'm also 5'1", have short legs, and am genetically gifted with my father's athletic calves. Thanks, Dad. Since my legs are so hard to fit and these fit me perfectly with tights and dresses/skirts, I got both colors and haven't regretted it for a moment.

Thanks everyone for all your input!

K, I really love the suggestion of buying them from zappos and sitting on them for a year. That hits at one of my concerns- since it's only the beginning of fall here, I'm still not sure how much use I'll get out of the brown boots. I don't want to double down on a style that I don't use as much as anticipated.

I think I'll go ahead and take that suggestion!

I love k can shop's suggestion to buy and see how much you yearn to wear them. I don't think it's a "rookie" mistake at all to get a second pair of footwear that you love. It's so hard to get the fit, style, and comfort all together in one package, that it makes some sense to get duplicates when you find all that in one pair. It's hard to know how you're going to feel about having two of the same pair, though, so trying them out seems like a great way to go. (I'm going to tuck this strategy away for further use--thanks, k!)

N-Marie, you and your little one are adorable!

Now to your dilemma: I know that temptation, N-Marie. I don't know how to advise you, but I can say that I recently duplicated a bootie purchase--taupe Sam Edelman Louie bootie--in black, because I loved the originals so much. But once I had them, I realized I just didn't want two of the same boot, no matter how fab or well-fitting. And, like your Borns, the Louies were both. I returned the 2nd pair last weekend, and am back on the hunt for a low-heeled bootie.

You got me with the baby picture! She's absolutely adorable!

For the boot, I personally don't mind duplicates where I love something. However, I always feel like the second choice gets a lot less wear and a lot less love than the first. With that said, I have a pair of simple, very plain, flat knee high boots from JCrew that I bought about 6 years ago. They have an almond toe, so not too round, not too pointy. I love them, they've been a great investment, and I really really really wish that I'd bought them in black too. The other side of the coin is that I have a pair of black ankle boots that I adore too, and they get a lot of wear when I want to switch it up from a knee high.

I'd probably buy them in your size in black, let them sit for a while (you can return them for a full year to Zappos, so that makes sitting back a little easier) and see if you keep finding yourself wishing you could crack them out, or whether you feel like they can go back without causing you too much pain. I notice (and I'm sure that Zappos has noticed!) that I feel a lot more pressure to buy when I think they might sell out. Maybe that pressure is working on you too?

I've done it! I have the Frye Rory's in 3 colors! I'm not sure I'd do it again, but I'm not sorry I did it because I love them. I'd say if you need black tall boots and you love these, why not?

And oh my gosh your baby is ADORABLE!!

i would find another black boot or get another type of shoe to fill another wardrobe hole, esp if you are rebuilding a wardrobe.

I'd like to start by thanking all of you for counseling me against buying the too-tall Frye boots I showed in this post: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ect-height. As a newbie to tall boots, your input was very helpful.

I tried on my different boots before arriving at the Born Sage boots in walnut (http://www.zappos.com/born-sage), which I just love - they are the right height (not an easy task since I'm only 5'1), the right mix of tight + slouchy, a good mix of sturdy but not too rugged and are incredibly comfortable. I've shown them in pic 1 below (mostly a baby pic, lol)

I'm tempted to get the same boots in black. But...I don't know if that's a rookie error. They're pretty stylized (buttons going up the side), so it would be pretty obvious that they are the "same" boot.. They're also not cheap (although as tall boots go, not terrible expensive either). Am I just stockpiling if I get a pair in black?

Other considerations:
- I am rebuilding a wardrobe post-baby and post-student life so budget is a consideration
- I could use the money instead to dabble in a more on-trend shoe/boot, such as an ankle bootie (but I fear I might get less use out of it)
- There are only 2 pair left in my size in black on zappos (Oh no!)

Thanks!
