I have just pruned my collection to some tween neighbours. I have kept my best six colours and not planning to add. True red, dark oxblood, hot pink, pale pink, light blue, navy blue. I will get other colours in a manicure or pedicure though- mostly pinks and oranges.

They are a small treat that always fit!

I do this too! In my case it's usually from looking for just the right shade of (fill in the blank). I like variety so my color range is broader than what you are describing, but I have probably 6 shades of grey from just thinking each new one would be the perfect grey of my dreams. Ditto purple, etc.

Part of my issue is because of allergies I'm restricted to the 7 or 9 free brands, my favorite of which is Zoya...which no one carries locally. So I wait for some fantastic online sale directly from Zoya (like last black Friday they had everything 70% off) and then buy every color that looks good. Seriously, I bought 20 something colors then. And of course, about 15 were great and 5 or more not so great, but I figured it wasn't worth returning...and so it goes.

The other part is just what you say. Pretty colors, fun tiny splurge...yep, that's how a collection grows.

I'm still looking for the perfect rose gold. And I'm surprisingly picky about "nude" shades (which I wear on my fingers sometimes). It figures, I got the perfect color on my last manicure, but didn't make a note of the name of the polish. Darn it!

It makes me giggle that others are having this same polish-collecting problem. Maybe it's because nail colours are so pretty, and it feels like a minor splurge.

Yes! A definite culprit here. I am similar to Janet and KM - I will often think a colour is going to look different on and when I get home, find that I have very similar shades.... I definitely need to do some more mindful shopping when it comes to nail polish.

I do that, too! I had some so old, the polish separated.

My issue is that I would buy something expecting the color to look a certain way on my nails, and that wouldn't be the case, so then I would buy something else that was similar till I got what I wanted (or, more often, till I gave up...)

I can't do fingernails either but love polish on my toenails. I don't buy lots of polish but I do have a backup of my favorite dark red. Asides from that I have one bottle of a very light pink (that I'll never use) and several bottles of various shades of blue/green.

I have a habit of buying really weird polish colors, like asphalt grey and olive green. They make terrible toenail colors, because they just look, erm, fungal? But I wear them anyway. I probably shouldn't.

I buy bottles so I can bring my own polish when I get a mani or pedi, with the idea that I can repair chips on my own later. I rarely get around to those repairs, but at least I've got the bottle as a backup if I get my act together!

The checkout areas at TJ Maxx and Marshall's are dangerous to me because of my propensity to pick up a few of the discounted Essie colors.

I am totally guilty of this! I only polish my toenails, and only in the summer, and I'm too lazy to change the color more than once a week (if we're being honest, I usually leave it on 2 weeks). Yet I have LOADS of nail polish. I have colors I haven't used in years (but that are still perfectly good). But hey, most of it is relatively inexpensive and it doesn't take up a ton of room...

Yes. I often fall for those seasonal packages of color, because I love variety! And then I wear maybe one of the colors. Once or twice. I'm terrible about buying polish and not wearing it. I just bought a bottle the other day and put it on my toenails. (Yay! One wear, so far.) My intention, of course, is to keep up the polishing habit over the summer. I also envisioned polishing my fingernails, but that hasn't happened yet.

Yes! Guilty as charged I stopped polishing my nails two years ago. But until then I've amassed about 50 wonderful colours. All of them different but there never has been the slightest chance to empty any one of them.
Sometimes I feel guilty for not using them more. And then I come into the bathroom and they look so colorful and that makes me happy. Which I think is a good thing. And maybe - just maybe - the next "I colour my nails every day" phase is just around the corner

When I was younger all my nail polish was a wine red color. I would think I was buying a different color but I would get home and find out it was exactly the same shade as all my other bottles.

Now I usually, but not always, wear lighter shades on my toes. Some of them are the same colors I wear on my fingernails - baby blue, white, seafoam green. But I also wear some really bright colors on my toes like bright pink and coral that I would never wear on my fingernails.

The Cat -- great tip about using nail polish to "repair" stuff! I always use a sharpie, but it wears off. My grandma used to use red nail polish to write our names and the year on the Christmas tree ornaments she gave us every year. :-)

I used to. Every few months ended up donating a few bottles. Now have settled into one color for feet, one for hands and only keep those. Toes always dark, hands nearly always nude/buffed or natural (pink/beige) polish.

Oh yes, I sometimes do, especially tempting colours in small, inexpensive bottles. I seldom wear colours on my finger nails. But some (not all) of the colours I buy will actually be used on my toe nails.

However, here comes a practical tip: I use nail polish (in the correct colour, of course) to "repair" belts, shoes, etc. on small parts where the original colour is lacking.

Angie's toenail polish post this morning reminded me of a funny story. A few years ago, my daughter was riffling through my bottles of nail polish and she asked if we could buy some more colours. I said, "Why? we have loads", and she replied that almost all of them were black. I must have looked confused, because she held some up and said, "See? You have purple that looks like black, and blue that looks like black, and red that looks like black, and green that looks like black, and I think this one might actually be black...". She was right! I hadn't realized that I gravitate towards super-dark colours. (In my defence, non of the colours looks like black once it's on your fingers -- they just look really dark in the bottle).

Silly thing is, I almost never wear fingernail polish. It won't stay on my fingers. I'm much more likely to wear toenail polish, and if I do, I wear light pink -- never dark colours on my toes! So what's up with impulsively buying bottles of dark nail polish?

Over to you. Does anyone else buy polish they don't wear? And are your fingernail polish colour preferences different from your toenail polish ones?
