Check Ann taylor sale racks for silk or sequined going out tops at great prices.
You can often pick up decent little jackets at second hand shops for very little. Just be picky about fit. I've found nice black blazers especially abundant that would be too long for skirts but a good boyfriend look with jeans when the sleeves are rolled. In another life they were probably part of a suit. Look for AnnTaylor, Theory and other better brands.

Haha - I was looking at a sequinned tank I found on a sale rack today - sadly, it was about two sizes too small for me But I will keep looking because I can see how useful it would be.

Yep, the sequin tank is a great going out item! And you can find them as cheap as under $15 at Kmart, if you just want to try it out without committing a ton of your budget. http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_1.....7119370187 Otherwise, there are dozens in the $30 - $50 range to be found online.

This will be fun! Just think, if you can start with 2 tops, a jacket, and a skirt - added to your black pants, you've already got 8 looks before you even get to the shoes and accessories :)
And just to make you feel better, none of my items cost more than $60 - including the 100% cashmere sweater or the tux jacket! So this can be done relatively reasonably.

Thank you, everyone! Lots of useful information there. Loving Imogen's work - I'm a really visual person and have to see things to fully 'get' them lol. I will have a search for Angie's post as well - I do well with formulae for these kind of things.

I do have some dressy black heels, as well as the dressy (definitely 'car to bar'!) boots, and the black pants, but I don't really have a lovely jacket, or tops that can be mixed and matched. And maybe a skirt, too. Ooh, this will be fun - it will take me some time, though.

AJ - lovely shoes.

yellowgirl - I have a workout capsule too, and am working on getting a SAHM capsule together - as I do both of those things every day!

A few years ago Angie posted a formula that I memorized for going out (it was one of the first YLF things I tried). I briefly looked for the post in the archives because I believe it had visuals but I couldn't find it. This is the formula: Trouser jeans, a camisole under a fitted jacket and depending on weather either heeled sandals or heeled boots. I've used this with white trouser jeans in the summer, all different kinds of camisoles, and both lightweight and heavier jackets and feel like a million bucks every time.

The first thing you need to do is remember when planning clothing capsules is that you CAN mix and match your clothes. Often, we get in such a rut that we forget that there's more than one way of doing things. Once you break out of that way of thinking and try different things, you'll be amazed as what you can do.

Butterflylady, I saw this http://www.insideoutstyleblog......ening.html over at Imogen's blog and thought it might help you. (hope you don't mind, Angie!) It has the visuals - and just so happens to include black wide legged fluid drape trousers! It may be a bit dressier than what you are after, but it gives great ideas. All her capsule posts are very good, actually.

I've always thought there was good wisdom in buying capsules. When I really thought about my life and the different categories of activities that I do, I actually came up with a few different capsules that I'm working to address:

1. SAHM/MOTG outfits.
2. Casual Business outfits. I've listed this separately, but sometimes it is really just a scaled down version of my business attire outfits.
3. Business Attire outfits - we own a small business that 90% of the time I'm able to run from home, but the other 10% requires business attire.
4. Date night/dinner out with friends, etc. outfits.
5. Workout clothing. Yes, I've included a gear category b/c it's something I do everyday and I don't want to look like I'm wearing pajamas or old work clothes.

whew, feels like a lot of clothes, but when I started looking at my closet in these categories, it actually became easier to put together outfits and to shop to fill holes.

The suggestion to choose a colour palette and work within it is spot-on. Otherwise, I end up with too many orphans!

good suggestions from Mo! i'd start with gathering together the clothes that you tend to wear now, then shop your closet to see what else you can toss in there - do you have a pair of jeans that could work with your ankle boots, nicer tee and belted cardi, for instance? this will help you focus your 'non-closet shopping'.

it's also a good idea to think about how you're wearing your looks during your outings - are you always so cold that no one ever sees that cute blouse underneath your sweater? if that's the case, go for festive jackets, cardis, scarves that you can wear over a long sleeved tee. if you do a ton of walking (like i do), focus on foot wear that love your feet. and so on.

a couple of ideas that are helpful for me in making capsules - try to find pieces that can work with the more casual pieces in your wardrobe. Throwing on a tee, jeans and heels with Mo's tuxedo jacket would be a fun look for many restaurants or at a comedy club. If there is a basic item (pants, skirt, jacket, blouse) that you love and it really works for you, you can 'stretch' it by buying it in two colors (if available). a lighter version and a darker version of the same garment tend to look pretty different, but you can interchange them in the same outfit nine times out of ten for two different looks. white and black, dark denim and khaki, olive drab and tangerine....it depends on your palette.

i find people focus on your face, so i'd start with 2-3 bottoms (hopefully ones that you can wear with different shoes to change them up a bit) and then focus on pieces that will change up your above the waist look. Again, Mo's advice on choosing a palette is very wise - the more you can intermix your 'above the waist' pieces, the more possibility for variety. don't neglect scarves, statement necklaces, earrings either - and there are some great pieces on sale a thrift stores, etc.

what a fun project! and a good idea! steph

I've recently discovered the power of shoes to transform the vibe of an outfit. So I would also recommend adding an edgy/sexy sandal to this capsule. It doesn't have to be high heels if that's not comfortable. These are my fun going out pair.

Thanks for the pics - I need the visuals lol.

Now I am thinking about it, I already have some black pants which are dry clean only, and quite 'dressy' - they are a fluid wide leg - which I tend to keep for going out because of having to take them to the cleaners! And I have high heeled black ankle boots. But no jacket - love yours - or any embellished tops. I am going to make a list with the list app on my phone, so if I see things I can buy them (funds permitting).

I think picking a color palette and starting with 3 or 4 pieces would get you off the ground. How about some embellished tanks with a jacket or new look cardi that could go over? Add some snazzy boots or heels to some jeans and you have a few looks already.

For me, a black striped sequin tank, a blush chiffon tank, a crop tux jacket and a ruffle cardi have played into my go out look lately.

I've noticed yet another gap in my wardrobe - suitable clothes for going out (with friends, or with my husband). We don't tend to go anywhere high end - just restaurants, the movies, maybe the theatre or a comedy show. I try to get out with my girlfriends at least once a month, and they must be sick of my 'dressier' clothes as I have worn the same things over and over again!

I was wondering if I could start (or at least start to look - sale season is upon us here) to work out a 'capsule' of clothes that are a bit dressier/fun than my day-to-day SAHM outfits - maybe some subdued sparkle? I have no idea what I am talking about here (!!) but I'd like to have a selection of clothes that I could make multiple outfits from, instead of panicking and then wearing the same old thing.

Is that possible? How would I even start?
