As Angie often says, horses for courses...in other words, wear what the occasion calls for. I don't like full-on gear sneaks for anything other than their intended purpose. For me, the quickest way to look my age is to wear wide leg jeans at a longer length with a true athletic sneaker. Fashion sneaks are a staple in my wardrobe now that I am less inclined to wear heels, which is why I have a full spectrum. My Finds below are just for non-sweat activities.

My super sporty fashion Rihanna Fenty by Puma are very comfortable & good for long distances. I recently wore them for a long urban photo trip.
Adidas in general work for me as fashion sneaker with gear roots.
I have a mishmash of other designer sneakers, Rick Owens, Gucci, Givenchy, & Celine.
I use Asics for working out & Asolo for hiking.
Honestly given my current lack of social life, fancy sneakers for commuting give me a minor boost.
Finding your "gear" brand & then their non-tech offerings works best.

I used to wear sneakers only for the gym and exercise but i recently found a pair of Vionics that are nice looking and so comfy and supportive that I want to wear them everywhere. When i was in Hong Kong last month I walked over 20k steps each day in them. I wore them with tube skirts, rolled jeans and leggings and I thought that they looked fine.

I recently got the pair below and am really loving their low contrast with my skin. If I keep enjoying them I'm considering a navy pair for fall to wear with jeans and black trousers. I've never been much of a sneaker person because they've always looked so big on my feet, but these feel a little lower profile and not so puffy.

Colourful shoes have been making a big splash recently and I love how they can go with my generally colourful summer tanks, shorts, even summer dresses!

If you want a sneaker that is extremely comfortable yet stylish, here are the ones I would suggest:
1. Crosstrainers
2. Running
3. Basketball

All have great cushioning and should be fairly easy to pair with outfits

Like you, I've recently added a lot more sneakers to my wardrobe because I'm loving the athleisure trend. Also because I have foot problems, and sneakers are MOST comfortable.

My actual running/walking shoes are used only during exercise. I replace them every 4 months. I currently have 2 for workouts because I like to switch out my shoes (foot pains, again)

I have 3-4 fashion slip on sneakers, I have a pair of sketchers I wear only for casual use (they get dirty easily). I take them with me when I travel because I need very supportive shoes when I have to walk a lot. I have a pair of reebok shoes that look like cons but are a lot more supportive, and I also have low profile black leather sneakers. Oh - and I have denim sneakers too. I dont like actual running shoes (especially bright ones) with casual clothes though....a little hard to pull off with my short height.

For me, Saucony Jazz perform best for lots of walking/standing -- better than my running shoes used to, and I feel more stylish in them. Jazz Low Pro have less of a heel-to-toe drop than Originals, and I find that they are better for walking, and Originals are better when I expect to do lots of standing.

Ironically, I never ever wore sneakers for fashion when I was a runner. I wore my retired running shoes for casual activities, and felt frumpy in them. Now that I am sidelined from running (due to arthritis in my knees), I allowed myself to consider other styles of sneaker, and fell in love.

And also ironically, I now exercise in flip flops, because I am just riding an exercise bike at home.

I added a few of my recent favorites for stylin', plus the Skechers that are on their way to me today. (At $15 for the blue pair and $20 for the silver, I felt like I didn't need to choose ...) I've had a fascination with metallics recently, obviously!

Edited to add -- one of my pet peeves about sneakers as casual wear was socks: I just hate how they look. Most no-show socks are a fail for me (maybe because I have size 11 feet) -- none of them stay on my heels, even the ones with the silicone sticky stuff. But recently I found awesome (albeit expensive) ones at Lululemon that actually work for me -- thought I'd share in case others are also struggling with this: http://shop.lululemon.com/p/wo.....8&col

I totally agree with Elly. I have to replace my running shoes frequently anyway-- I don't want to further wear out their support and padding by wearing them as street shoes. Apart from that I just don't want to. I have a poison eye for running shoes with jeans and the ones I wear (shown below) would look strange (too me) with almost everything in my wardrobe.

My sneaker collection is shown below. It doesn't include my running shoes or heavy hiking boots (actually a pair of Bates combat boots) that I mostly wear in the snow with heavy socks. The purple pair of Salomon's are for hiking/the lake/touring, but I've been known to wear them with jeans in CO when the weather was sloppy but didn't call for boots (you know, when you are sick of snow). All the rest are for casual wear/ wearing to work (14,000 square foot with concrete floors). The cons are the ones that they made partnering with Nike, which makes them WAY more comfortable. The two burgundy pairs are better for cool weather because they aren't as breathable. The Nike pair and the red Salomon's can double as "workout" or "hiking" shoes in a pinch while on a trip. However, in general I don't think it is a good idea to wear your athletic shoes as street shoes unless you keep your exercise low-impact. Every step in them is wearing out the support and padding that is needed to protect your joints, especially if you do something higher impact like running or crossfit.

I'm a staunch supporter of wearing the appropriate athletic shoes for my actual athletic activities, like trail running and hiking. However, I find athletic shoes a bit ugly (especially now that they only seem to make them in rainbow barf colours!) so I don't wear them for anything else.

I do wear Cons frequently, although I consider them fashion sneakers since they don't provide enough support for anything high-impact. If we had a dog, I'd walk it around the neighbourhood in Cons, wellies, flat sandals or a pair of comfortable heeled booties, depending on the weather. I probably wouldn't walk around my neighbourhood in my unattractive hot pink running shoes.

Interesting question. I had a thing against running shoes for a long time. But since Lilypup, who comes with me everywhere - if she can't go, we don't go - I am always seriously walking. So I wear them to walk. I guess I could wear walking shoes, but running shoes are flexible and lighter weight. I guess it effects what I wear too. I generally stay away from colour in my sneaks, tho not my clothes, for that urbane look, lol. But also because I have requirements and those shoes don't usually come in colours.

Requirements like I don't do the under-arch cutout. I need more stability.

I too reserve running shoes for running only. I don't like the look of them with non-running clothes. I've never been a huge fan of wearing sneakers outside of their intended purpose. For comfort and the health of my feet I wear Dansko clogs at home. The rest of the time I wear shoes, sandals or boots. I would consider wearing Superga slip-ons.

I haven't found crossover sneakers to be particularly useful. The soft bottom on running shoes wears out quickly, so I tend to reserve running shoes for running only, and hiking shoes for hiking only, and wear something with a more durable outsole for casual around-town wear, that way I don't have to replace my actual running shoes all the time.

I do find casual boots that can go from town to an easy dayhike to be quite useful -- doc martens, blundstones, clarks desert boots, some fryes, etc, all fall into this category for me.

I do have Chuck Taylors, but they're purely fashion/casual shoes for me. I do like the look of Diana's teal NB's -- those are cute. I also like the look of the other "classic" sneakers: Onitsuka Tiger, Saucony Jazz, Adidas Samba, etc. Canvas Superga sneakers seem to be a good "grown up" alternative to Chucks.

My Salomon waterproof hiking shoes are really gear. I have several pairs of them, and I wear them hiking, birding, dog walking, and travelling. I took them to Turkey last year, and was glad to have them because it rained or snowed almost every day. This past weekend we went on a road trip to Las Vegas and I wore them every single day, walking around various wildlife preserves, parks, etc.

I have a pair of white Cons, and a pair of olive Jack Purcells. These are for wearing around town in warmer weather. They aren't as comfortable as my hiking shoes, but are look nicer. I was wearing the Jack Purcells when a 20 something guy on his skateboard complimented me on them!

I also have a pair of high top leather Cons that I never wear. They are neither here nor there. They are not really winter shoes, but they seem too warm for summer. I could use some advice on styling them!

I agree that athletic sneakers provide the best support. For a little more stylish look, I like "fashion" sneakers made by athletic brands. (Like the teal retro New Balances I just bought). I like New Balances because they are relatively low-volume while still providing good support and a reasonably roomy bunion area, so I tend to stick to that brand. My true fashion sneakers (by non-athletic brands) are never as comfortable.

The second pair is what I wear for working out (on the elliptical mostly) - I have two pairs, one exclusively for working out, and one for outdoor things like walking around the park, etc. The second pair is actually an older one that I used to use on the elliptical - I find i need more padding for the constant movement of the elliptical vs. just walking around, so I buy a new pair for working out every 9 months or so.

ETA: I have trail runners (also NB) too that I use for hiking (I hate running, on trails or elsewhere) but I think I want to get some real hiking boots again (timberlands or similar) as I have a bad ankle and really should be wearing something with better ankle support while hiking/walking on uneven trails.

I have jumped onto this bandwagon just in the last year or so, in part because of foot pain with higher heeled shoes. I have some silver Cole Haan sneakers. Also, a pair of converse, which I'm only so so on. They may be a mistake, but they are black with studs, and that's a hard combo for me to say no to.

I am going to be a lemming (but a different color way) and try the Ecco sneakers that are all over YLF.

As far as trying to find maximum comfort, I'm still considering a retro new balance tennis shoe in navy.

Aside from wearing sneakers for their intended purposes, athletic activities, hiking, just casual dressing, serious walking, or other specific needs it can get confusing? Do you buy and only wear sneakers for their specific use or not? I always have about 6 pairs for activities like the gym, running, dog activities, slip ons for general fashion purposes, etc. I am thinking as some are needing replaced soon, that I would consider the athleisure trend, and invest in something like black and white Nikes running shoes for multiple uses. To me ones that are called walking shoes, except for some Sketcher styles, are generally ugly, Trainers are generally too bulky looking to look fashionable outside the gym. Many are way too colorful to work with a varied wardrobe.

Since most athletic shoes are designed for their intended uses, like trail running has the best traction for varied terrain running, and also make good hiking shoes. Those called fashion sneakes genrally have less support, less padding, etc. It is certainly more fun to just buy them for style and colors, but you can end up with some mistakes.
