Unfrumped, Glory and Dianthus: thanks so much for your input and extra suggestions. This is in fact an older thread that was revived by a spammer earlier today (I've removed the spam in the meantime). I'm in a pretty happy place where leather jackets are concerned right now (after getting the white leather jacket from Danier earlier this year, and scoring during NAS last month too:-)

I'm sure though that a few extra jackets will gradually find their way into my wardrobe in the future, as I just adore them:-)
Unfrumped: love the idea of deep grey. And I'm holding thumbs that you'll find your perfect one soon.
Glory: burgundy is definitely a fantastic option. I got a dark burgundy (more of a grape colour) one at last year's NAS and wear it all the time.
Dianthus: I hear you on green (olive for you) being super versatile. I have a pleather one in teal that gets a lot of wear too.

I like the idea of green. I have a slightly olive green jacket and find it works with far more than I had expected. It is also a color I didn't think I could wear but it turned out to be the second most worn jacket I've had in a few years.

I love the idea of a cropped jacket for you very similar to the one you have on. In terms of colour - that is tricky. Black is timeless and elegant but if you are not sold on it there are many other options. Here are a few from Danier:
http://www.danier.com/leather-.....colour=305|325431&mc=yes

Colors are harder to come by though the selection is increasing.. Especially hard are the cool neutrals. Have you seen some if the ones that are deep gray? I'm trying to hold out for a cool mid brown or warm gray to lighten up dark bottoms. The Vince in ? Cafe au lait looks divine but was so pricey.
To me most leather jackets seem hard to style for indoors/- I mean like desk work or meetings-- except the blazer styles. So that is less of a goal for me than its being versatile enough to toss on over a variety of outfits.

MNsara showed some beautiful leather jackets from Nordstroms. Inge do you have Nordstroms in your city, or do they ship to you?
I also love leather jackets and it does seem that one needs a couple because just like other jackets it's hard to find one to serve all occasions. I absolutely love Angie's cream leather jacket. That would be a nice wardrobe addition and be nice worn in or outdoors. It seems they are a bit hard to find.

Thank you so much San, Taylor and Sara!!

San: I am open to both shiny and matt, really, I think both can look beautiful. Purple, navy and jade green all sound fantastic. I've been wanting to build a leather jacket collection (only have one real leather one at the moment) for ages, so high time to get started:-)
A collarless style sometimes does have a more indoor-vibe, doesn't it, good point!
The Vince and June jackets are gorgeous. I've heard nothing but good things about Mackage too. I have a white pleather jacket that looks a lot like the Mackage one you linked to San. That one I do wear mostly outdoors. I think I'm going to stay away from rib-knit trims though, because they can start to pill after a while-(

Taylor: I totally agree with what you are saying about a slimmer fit and a not too long length for indoors. I've never tried a blazer style before, will do that too. And we totally need to see you in that burgundy jacket, it sounds amazing!!

Sara: Thank you so much for looking on eBay for me!! (I'll keep checking there once in a while, you never know...) I'm quite picky too, but we *shall* find our jackets!-) Your thoughts about the fit of the jackets you linked too are very helpful too, I really appreciate it.
The grey Steve Madden one is beautiful, I'd need to see it on because that type of sleeve can look a bit un-streamlined. The stretch panels on the Via Spiga one will definitely add to the comfort factor, but the knit fabric has me worried (re: pilling). The Lafayette one is amazing, I so wish I could wear that colour. I think you can though!

Thank you again, ladies, your input has been incredibly helpful!

Oh, Inge, this idea is near and dear to my heart! I LOVE leather jackets and constantly try them on, often bring them home, and usually return them!

With my success rate, it could take years to find a jacket that met ALL my specifics (color, fit, weight, price, etc.), so I know you'll have to be persistent or lucky.

That said, I found these at Nordstrom Rack:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/st.....n=category great color for you, but this brand is usually a straight jacket on my shoulders and upper arms, also too long in the sleeves for my short arms. I don't know how the weight would work indoors.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/vi.....n=category this one I've seen - good cropped length and it has a great vintage leather vibe. The stretch panels would make it more comfortable indoors. I can picture this color working with your navys, blacks, etc. I don't know about Via Spiga fit.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/la.....n=category this is usually a great leather - always soft and should be indoors comfy. The color is bolder though and it's only in one size, but that could well be the correct size . . .

I also think that merlot jacket of Karen's would have been lovely. . . I did a quick ebay search, it was a long shot, and came up empty handed :-(

ETA: I know what you mean about black leather - it's pretty stark and I'm often not in the mood for it!

I own many leather jackets and some I wear as the~ top~ to my outfit and they never come off indoors.
I think that works best(for me) when they are a snug/slim fit...are more of a cropped/shorter length...just below the waist of a pant or skirt and if they have a fitted blazer style. I have a favorite distressed burgundy leather jacket that looks great with denim or a skirt as a topper:)

Would a collarless jacket like this make it more indoor friendly?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vi.....=4915#/top

I haven't seen this one in person but I know Mackage makes a very nice jacket with spandex in the lining so they are very comfortable. They run small too.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ma.....=3427#/top
I know black is not your preference but I thought these jackets had some details worth discussing in helping you choose your next jacket.

Inge, another consideration is the finish of the leather. Do you prefer a shine or matt finish?
I think the black jacket you are wearing in the picture looks very good on you, not too harsh at all. I love the tip on wearing a brighter lipstick when wearing black too. I will remember that.
A leather jacket is a big investment and you are wise to take your time and let the perfect one come to you. I would love to see you get a purple one, or navy, or jade green.

Thank you so much everyone for the wise feedback!
Lots to think about and lots of jackets to try on;-)

Good to know that you guys like my current black faux leather one. I think I can get away with it as long as I add a scarf and lipstick. But for my next one, I really want a jacket that I can wear without scarves too, if that makes sense. (not that I'm sick of scarves, nope;-)

I think it really boils down to finding one that jumps out to me, colour- and stylewise, and then hopefully it will fit like a dream too...

Dawn: Thank you for liking my hair! And I doubt that you are a fashion disaster;-) Very good point about the scarf.

Lyn: Funny isn't it, how faux leather is sometimes softer than the real thing? I love the sound of yours, and also love you in your new tan one!

Deborah: Camel will wash me out, I fear, but I do LOVE purple, so that's definitely an option. I wouldn't mind a longer jacket either, in fact I think I *need* a cropped one and a longer one:-)

Heleen: Oh, I'll have to see if I can find the Transmission brand over here. Olive is a fab colour for leather jackets, I would need to see it on though to make sure if the colour is flattering. I could definitely see me in this style.

Aunty: *blushing* thank you for the compliment. And you're not the only purple fan here, oooh noooo!-)

Suz: What you're saying is so true, quite a number of factors come into play. And you don't have to convince me, I just *know* I need more than one!!-)

Carole: I hear you on the brown being not the easiest when it comes to selecting footwear options. But I bet it looks amazing on you!

Kellygirl: If I could find the perfect emerald green jacket, I'd be in heaven. So beautiful.

Celia: You have such a good memory, I did get a teal sweater at NAS. Grey would be fab with that, wouldn't it.

Angie: All amazing suggestions, thank you. That grey-ish brown would be fantastic, indeed, but loving all the other colours too. I'll take one in every colour, please:-)
Karen's merlot jacket is so so stunning, I actually had my eye on it back then too, should have bought it...
(you're so right about lipstick + black clothes)

Rachylou: Very good point about the tans. I will just have to try them all on;-)

You look fabulous in this coat (!!) It is a teensy bit 'aggressive' as looks go, but you look fabulous! I like the cropped style on you a lot. I wouldn't do one that hits at the waist. Also, about colours, like not all tans are the same. Dyes and undertones can make a big difference. I'm thinking sharp, clear colour for you...

Inge, you have completely softened the black leather jacket with the scarf! KILLER outfit boot twin :)

You look amazing in grey-ish browns (like your sleeveless Mexx shirt dress and butterfly dress), and all greys actually. Blue, green, eggplant and navy leather are fabulous options too. Karen's merlot jacket would have been perfect - but we bought that 3 years ago. :(

And never underestimate the power of lipstick when you wear black!

Inge, this jacket looks great on you but I agree that a grey one would be more versatile and more in tune with your coloring and wardrobe(I am reminding especially of a teal top you bought at NAS this year).
In terms of shape I think this one is a great one for you and would keep it in the cropped side.

This jacket looks fantastic on you. Not harsh at all. But I get it. As Suz suggests, I can see you in the colors she mentions.

I have a dark chocolate brown, it almost looks black. I thought it would be easier to wear but I have trouble with footwear. Black doesn't look right, either does brown. So I would keep that in mind as you look. Taupe sounds like a great choice if you can find that.

Inge, I'm reading along with great interest because I have the exact same question. This jacket in the photo looks great on you here as you have styled it, but we may be influenced by your great styling and not see the harshness of the contrast so much...at least this is always what I fear, looking at myself. And how it looks NOW (at start of winter) is different to how it may look and feel later (towards the end of winter). So....ideally you would have more than one jacket? ;-)

I can really see you in purple, or a grey, or blue, or taupe of some kind, and any of those could also work as neutrals. However, black DOES seem to be the thing that goes with everything else and is so classic in leather.

Hmmm. Tough decisions.

Inge I think you have that gorgeous complexion that glows with bright strong colours.
The black is fab but I would add some strong colour against it. I know I am addicted to purple but................ a purple leather jacket would look great on you

Inge, I think the black looks terrific on you, especially with the scarf to soften the effect near your face.

I think grey could be lovely, and Heleen's olive suggestion is also very appealing.

I would try on as many jackets as possible, to see what is the range of jackets available and how they suit you. I saw great leather jackets at dutchesses, by Transmission. How would you feel about this style & colour (olive)? Softer than black, but still a dark neutral.

Inge, another non expert here :). And I just "happened" upon my black leather jacket, so no real search or process took place. I like the black one you own and if you are concerned about harshness of the black against your face, a scarf could fix that :). I could imagine you wearing camel or purple:). I could be wrong but I think purple is a very versatile color that works with neutrals and other colors. Given you have the more cropped black one, maybe this one could be a longer cut for some variety?

I really don't know about indoor leather jackets, but I actually like this on you, Inge. (see, I love neutral scarves:-)), but what about a not so voluminous and a brighter colourred one here?)

I can understand your concernes about black stiff leather eventually beeing too harsh on you, I had the same concerns(especially I am blonde)...I never owned a black leather jacket, thus I really wanted to.
Pre YLF I did have one very soft red pleather jacket for many years(loved it!) and when I have worn that out I wanted to replace it with a true leather, but never found one so soft and as flaterring as the old one was.
So, I finally went with one another pleather jacket, this time in a tan, which people say flatter my complexion(as am blonde and wear so much dark colours).

I say the jacket has to be simple and streamlined as possible-for a flattering look, in a colour you most like and is versatile enough with your wardrobe.

Inge, I don't know anything about leather jackets, and don't own one, but I think the one you posted looks terrific. I like the dark color on you - your lovely skin and dark hair look great with it.

Inge,

I am a complete newbie here and am for the most part a fashion diaster, but thought maybe I could learn by also answering (if that makes any sense?).

I think the darker color jacket looks very nice on you, but perhaps do you think a brighter scarf (like in Angie's post) would do the trick? The same print but not in gray tones?

Again, I am such a novice that I don't know if my first instinct is a good one or not.

By the way, love your pixie cut!

I love how a dressy leather jacket immediately adds polish, interest and a bit of edge to almost any outfit. I want to get one to wear indoors, so no outerwear. One that is feminine, very soft (no stiff leather) and streamlined, chic, and as versatile as possible.

E.g. I absolutely love Angie's black cropped leather jacket:
http://youlookfab.com/2009/02/.....manhattan/

Three questions:

1. Although I think black leather is super stylish, I'm not sure it would be the best colour for me. It can look very harsh with my complexion. (see pic below).
Cognac and tan are super chic too, but unfortunately aren't good colours for me either.
So should I look for something in the grey/taupe family?
(P.S. I also love green, blue, red and purple leather, but these are perhaps less versatile? An off-white one is definitely on my wish list, but maybe not for Fall and Winter.)

2. Should I keep the style as simple as possible? Should I look for a cropped one?
Which styles would you recommend?

3. In the picture below I'm wearing a black pleather jacket from H&M. I wanted to experiment with black leather, but I feel neither the colour nor the style are the most flattering on me, and it looks quite stiff. Should I keep it or let it go?-)

Thank you!
