I have a friend that does something very similar. She buys a weeks-worth of pieces or maybe a few more in "perfect outfits." Occasionally a perfect outfit will include a piece from a season past, particularly items like pencil skirts, coats, and shoes. However, she won't wear a pencil with a long hemline or the wrong shape if the current look in pencils is different. Then she wears her clothes into the ground and often gets rid of many of her pieces at the end of the season or the beginning of the next year. She generally buys inexpensive (h&m, gap, zara) and trendy pieces that fit a vibe which she changes from season to season. I think this technique works for her for two reasons. First, she lives in a relatively warm climate year around (she isn't having to invest in wool sweaters, multiple coats, lots of jeans, boots, ect) and she also doesn't work at the moment. So, she wears her clothes for outings during the week, errands, appointments, dinner dates, parties, and church but much of the time she is at the house in swimsuit and cover up or nice loungewear.

However, I could also see this working for ladies that work if expanded a bit. I don't currently work in an office where you have to dress, but definitely could see myself having like three bottoms and a jacket or cardi or two and then 6 or 7 blouses and all the pieces getting worn enough that they might be done in a season or two.

On the other hand, I have a friend that has a very small wardrobe (two jackets, two coats, a pair or jeans, a pair of pants, and several options of skirts and dresses). She tends to wear through tops within a year or so but buys a lot of higher quality bottoms and jackets and will wear the less trendy items for several years because they wear like iron.

In theory, I like the idea of having a small relevant wardrobe but I can't bring myself to do it. I hate the idea of getting rid of clothes which still work for my shape and style on the basis of seasonal trends, and I would get very bored half way through the season as well.

Now there is something to be said for trying out trends on the cheap so if it doesn't work out for you that you can get rid of it without feeling too much guilt.

I can see this as a strategy for someone who works in fashion and therefore places a premium on being completely current, but I can't see it for "normal" people. In theory I like the idea of having a small number of perfect outfits, but I think I need more options in order not to get sick of things. In any case my wallet really couldn't sustain this strategy.

I definitely add some pieces every season. But I keep some items too. I'd say at the most, half of my wardrobe is fair game for replacement after a season. But this always depends on my wallet. If the wallet is tight, less items are switched out for replacement pieces. It takes me so long to assemble an outfit the though of redoing ALL of them EVERY season is exhausting and overwhelming for me. But I also like more than only 3-4 outfit choices.

I would much rather have a variety of things I love than just a couple that I quickly tire of. I've spent two semester living out of a backpack, and it's heartbreaking to go from loving an item to loving the day you throw it away and never have to wear it again! I like to wear my things for as long as I possibly can, but I would prefer to spread out the wear over years, not months.

On the other hand, there are exceptions. If you're going through a change in weight or traveling this could make a LOT of sense.

Personally, I couldn't ever see myself doing that, even if I could afford it and was environmentally guilt-free ( is that an expression ? ) - I am with Marley on that ! I am just not trendy, I fall in love with my clothes ( for very long periods of time ), and I don't have the patience to shop so much.

Either way, I am impressed by the commitment to a strategy. I don't really have one, yet.

I have cousins that used to run a boutique in Portugal - they were the buyers. And they went through clothes like crazy. They would get new wardrobes every 4 months - completely new wardrobes.

Hmmm . . . I have a very wealthy girlfriend who buys a completely new wardrobe EVERY season - and gives the last season away. Unfortunately we do not wear even close to the same size in anything (not even shoes - sob!) so I never get any of her stuff. She hasn't simplified her wardrobe in any way - like the stylist you are talking about - except that she just cleans out her closet and starts fresh every season. I just wouldn't be able to do that myself. My neurosis would get in the way - I'd feel too guilty about the carbon footprint - as well as all of the people all over the world who never ever get a new outfit or a new pair of shoes. If she wasn't so generous with her clothes, all of her money and material things, and all of her time, she would make me a little crazy! As it is, I just love her gobs and gobs!

I read a book about simplifying your life where a Wall Street business executive had some number of the same exact really expensive suit and white shirt, and just wore the same thing every day. His rationale was that he had too many other decisions to make to worry about his clothing. Also, he was a MAN.

But as part of the extreme ways to simplify, she suggested buying repeats of the same pants and shirts, and using accessories to change it up. She gave Kate Hepburn as an example of a style icon with very few clothing choices. Interesting concept!

I can understand it if the 3-4 outfits are totally trendy stuff that would be "so last year" by next year, and if you also maintain a decent number of more classic pieces. That might be a really fun idea! Otherwise it just seems crazy to me!

I'd be interested to hear more too. I'm wondering if she has more classic pieces she pairs or alternates *with* the new seasonal/trendy stuff, then keeps when they go?

3 or 4 ready to wear outfits doesn't sound like enough to get me through a week let alone a season. True, there is mix and match potential, but still that does not sound to me like a complete wardrobe.
I have to admit, that my summer wardrobe is almost all new from this past summer, but I didn't have a whole lot of acceptable stuff to start off with. Next summer I just plan to replace some things and get into a cycle of regularly adding and culling.

I am just about to cull my wardrobe and bookshelf (Its almost painful to cull my books). I was reading a book about decluttering and read about a famous stylist who buys herself 3 or 4 ready to wear outfits each season then gives them away at the end of the season. I suppose if you bought cheap clothes and kept your accessories, it would work but it seems an expensive option (but attractive one if you like minimalism)
