I use 'button down' now because my English banker boss did - but to describe people, not shirts. Before that, it meant a button down collar to me, a very casual type of shirt worn only by academics, lol. Everything was a shirt, a polo, a tee, lol. Or a blouse, for women.

Good information. I have been at fault using "button-down". I like "button front". Does anyone else remember blouses in the days before knit fabric, that they all seemed to button up the back? If they did button in front, the buttons were usually large and decorative.

Good strategy, JP. All my clients use the word button-down - I guess because of me!

Suz, button-front is a good one.

Thanks, JP. Great info, and thanks for sharing.

I actually did know this! I *should* be using the word button through to describe all shirts. But button-down has stuck as a blanket term to describe all shirts. And in an effort to be consistent through 11 years of YLF content - I've continued to use the blanket term.

Yeah, I'm always amused when I hear "buttoned-down" used to describe men in formal (read: stuffy) business attire, because as you say, button-down shirts are for sports.

Interesting post by Angie. I assumed everyone knows the difference
between blouses and shirts - Just adding my 2 cents here, mistakenly “button-down” is being used a lot to describe the classic men’s shirt by retailers, blogger, etc..., however, not every shirt is a "button-down", the term refers only to the shirts that have buttons on the collar (as in the photos attached) – originally it was called “Polo Collar” and was worn exclusively by Polo players in the 19th century in England – because if it wasn’t buttoned down, the wind would flap the collar in their faces while riding. So, the shirt can be just called a shirt or maybe button up shirt. In 1900s Italians adopted it as a menswear fashion item for all men.
