Well, Angie, the colourful pants didn't work for me last time. (Tried the Sloanes in burnt orange and gifted them to Ms. Mary after a mere try on.) I DO like my plaid skinnies, however.

But ultimately, I think my path is to veer in another direction entirely. More on that soon. :)

I showed my DH the nordstrom stock photo when I was thinking of buying the EF ones and he snickered. I wore them once and he loves them. Men. Go figure.

Suz, I think you would actually really like the EF ones, even though they're too thin for your winter, but thinking ahead to when it warms up just a little. If you get to an somewhere with an EF store I would recommend at least a try on. I volunteer to take you to the Vancouver store if you happen to be out this way! The SA's would have you sorted in no time! When I was deciding between two sizes, the larger of the two sizes was actually too long on me, the proportions were just wrong, I needed more of a butt vest to skew sporty and less skirt like. I'm taller and heavier than you, so on you it would definitely be longer and much more real skirt like, and I bet dollars to doughnuts it would actually be what you're looking for. Pricey, yes but still Cdn $$ if you buy it here rather than ordering it online with the exchange. And my CPW is plummeting. Just a thought.....

It didn't surprise me that he liked it but not for that reason. He's actually not big on anything conventionally "sexy." (Thank goodness, since I'm never going to be bombshell.)

I think he saw it more as a kind of sporty-luxe piece. Not true gear, but useful in the same way, just for hanging around the house, doing quick errands, etc. His view was: if you can wear skinny jeans, you can wear that....whatever-it's-called.

If you can find a skirted legging that is longer, it may still work. I think you need the skirted legging to function as a skirt with built in leggings, not a butt vest.

Sveta, I think you are probably right about that. And leggings remind me of "leotards" (thick bunchy tights we wore to keep warm). Different from today's tights, even fleece ones or sweater tights, because they always fell down on me (just like leggings do...)

Angie, you are trying so hard to help! Alas...the reason the tights and a skirt work is that the waistband on tights is a lot thinner (I think). I never have a problem with that or feel uncomfortable. Only with thick elastic layered up. And the Vince Camuto knit skirts are not warm enough. Jennifer (Shiny) says the same -- also Shannon. It's odd because they are long and self-lined, but they don't work. They also stick to tights like the dickens and ride around, another irritation with knit over knit. I could look for warmer knit skirts, though, and will probably do that -- another year. I do have the fun jacquard knit tube skirt from Zara (knee length) and it works well.

TG, I don't know whether to be glad or sad that I am not alone in the daily diet of skinnies....

Caro, thank you! And yes, I think that would be such a fun way to branch out, and who knows? Maybe I will find the right version and it will work after all. I can always keep looking....

Interesting about the pants under skirt memories from the past...
When I was in grade 6 we had a school uniform of a brown dress and black apron (just thinking about it makes me shudder). No other clothing was allowed in the school and jeans were among the most prohibited items. So "cool" girls wore jeans UNDER school dress instead of tights :-)
Me? I was not cool and did not own jeans. I had to wear woolen leggings under my dress and I hated that - maybe this is one of the reasons I NEVER wore leggings later in 80s when they were fashionable and not keen on them now...

Suz, I so remember the snow pant trauma and am now coaching my kids through it. I live in skinny jeans from December to the end of February primarily because I wear snow pants to walk the kiddies to school every day. Sadly, at the end of the day (most days anyway), real life will have its way with our style ... *sigh* ...

Well, it might work, Caro. But as one thing layered over another it would have two (presumably elastic) waistbands, vs. one. Elastic waist would be better than a true trouser -- but....hmmm.....it's really hard to explain this.

Obviously the feeling I'm describing isn't universal, yet it is shared by some. I just hate bunchy layers around my midsection. So uncomfortable for me. I imagine it's the way some people feel about jeans, or others feel about button front shirts layered under sweaters (which don't bother me in the least) or the way still others feel about turtlenecks or high collars (ditto) -- I don't really understand it, but it feels the opposite of sleek to me. Even when it looks okay. You know?

Angie, yes --- I get it. The trouble is, it won't work for me.

I'm in a pickle of contradiction, you see.

Because my reason for not liking the butt vest is that it's too soft, unstructured, and "loungey" feeling (to me) to wear in public.

But a woven (like Caro's example and similar to woven trousers) is likely to feel too precious for my ordinary life. It would work great for going out to the city, etc. -- but I would worry too much about wrinkles and such if I wore it to curl up at home. Plus, it would have the problem of "bunching" at the waist.

Those of us who have grown up in Canada well remember being forced to wear snow pants under our skirts on cold winter days. THAT is the feeling I always get when I layer a skirt (or even a tunic) over trousers of any kind. So it's probably a no-go zone for me, alas.

One meaning of pelmet is do do with soft furnishings - it was the frilly short "skirt" at the top of my grandmother's curtains - there is also such a thing as a box pelmet - it's a non-gathered version that is made of plywood then covered in the same fabric as the curtains :)

I had no idea there was such a thing as a pelmet skirt though.

This thread had me running to your other thread for clarity, Suz. "Butt-vest" seemed to connote Homer-Simpson-like graphics, which seemed a bit drastic, even if New Year's is still fresh.

YES. Caro's first link. That's what I'm taking about. Cropped leggings worn under a woven skirt (which I hinted at right in the beginning, and linked to my own outfit wearing a version in print - perhaps you remember that, Suz?).

It just proves how much can be learned from a purchase, even if it doesn't work out entirely. Three cheers for experimenting and trying something new!

Wow! I actually like that first skirt a lot. Do you think "pelmet" is translated for "Helmut"????

And yes, this butt vest was worth it for the entertainment value alone!
