What about wearing your chunky shoes with looser denim silhouettes that AREN'T wide legs? Like barrel legs, carrot tops, peg legs &/ or jean joggers?

Angie, I do lije some of those stylings and in fact, I like them with drapier fabrics such as true trousers and full length. Hence, not working as well with denim for me. I tried a few “ trouser “ and even pleated denim styles thinking they would be a slam dunk for me, but no, due to all the things involved in having denim fabric fit in waist & hip plus wide legs.

But, I still have a pair of paper bag waist tropical wool wide trousers and I HAVE been able to wear them with sneakers and chunky boots and then my Ecco Sartorelle Oxfords.

So, tgat is now one of my target “ silhouette “. I can’t justify much more than one pair of expensive good wool or triacetate ( thinking of drape) wide dress trousers- it would just split wears and maybe go off fit, but I’m on the lookout for maybe a drapey track pant- sort of like kkards showed— really just would shop around for the best version for me, fit, color, washable for this pair.

I understand what you mean - I get annoyed by high heel, bare ankle stylings as well. So lazy, IMHO. Combined with the lack of seasonal practicality of both short pants with bare ankles *and* long, wide pants in my messy and cold winter climate!
I have re-embraced socks that show, and wear them with felt Birkenstock Bostons indoors, with both cropped pants and today, Zara cargo parachute pants. It's a vibe... I hope!

Actually unfrumped, I LOVE wider width pants and jeans with chunkier sneakers. I wore these pants with chunky oxfords, hi-tops and combat boots last week. These pants are full length on me like how the model is wearing them. My shoes in FINDS:

Thanks for sharing some of the ways you manage.

“More refined flats” is a category that I’m now having to forego for the most part- including lower-profile “ fashion sneakers” and flat boots, because of the shape and depth of the toebox.

So that has left me with more chunky and more bulbous footwear and more laceup styles to adjust fit. Not all horrible-looking, can interpret as more sporty but it does affect the proportions and the pant widths.
Interestingly it led me back to a style tutorial recommending pairing chunkier shoes with slim or tapered pants or jogger styles and wider pants with slimmer/ pointier/more refined styles, and, “ dictates” aside, I was finding that that was a formula that had tended to work for me and still resonates. Except for my feet are no longer cooperating! So I found less fun trying out newer wider pant widths that I normally would like.

It’s really more my “ eye” I will need to adjust and re-train.

I still can wear a few lower- profile ankle strap and laceups just due to rare lucky shape & fit, & hope to find some more as HEWI’s.

I can't wear heels but can wear pointy shoes and love pointy flats with wider hems. But also like chunky flats. Yes it is tricky without trying it all on together.

I'm on team Jeans Need Dressier Shoes Even For Errands Agreeing with Joy to look for refined shapes, even if they're flat.
That said, chunkier shoes bother me less if the pants legs have volume and length to balance them. Chunky shoes + cropped or skinny jeans makes me look right at the feet.

I tend to try to decide on pairings - cut and style of pants/jeans works for this type of shoe, and keep that in mind when shopping. For example, crop kick flares work with high shaft slim fitting booties that close the gap in the cold weather, ankle strap shoes in the warm, and sometimes loafers (depending on the outfit).

Look for flat shoes that are refined, not chunky. Even booties and sneakers. They are out there, sometimes hard to find. I often resort to loafers with thin Smartwool socks or short nylons.

unfrumped, where are you looking for jeans? A lot of denim is styled with flat footwear, sneakers, or flat forms, actually. I find it extremely refreshing - that was seldom the case before when almost everything was heels....

What types of shoes are you looking to wear with jeans?

I can help you with the lengths! Don't worry! Lengths are my thing :)

As for the seasonal confusion - personally, I ignore it! I can't get behind woolly sweaters, woolly coats, and beanies styled with jeans and barefoot Summery sandals.

Let me know how I can help!

Angie, thank you for this great review. I may be in market for some new jeans this spring.

I did notice and was maybe a little surprised, though shouldn’t be, by how many stock photos show high heeled pumps, pointy toes shoes and boots, or strappy sandals with the jeans still, particularly the wider legs and longer ones.
Yes , I did see some sneakers, slides, and stompier boots.
But it does seem that for “ selling “, in addition to the models’ body types themselves , there’s still a lot of selling the jeans with dressier, juxtaposed footwear that isn’t casual- friendly.

I know I “ can” wear whatever shoes i need for fit and comfort with whatever jeans. But I have found that even my “ eye” wants to see certain pant- shoe proportions , plus there is length and risk of seasonal confusion. so if building outfits from the shoes up, I find that influences ( meaning, limits) what styles of jeans I think work for me. That’s nothing new in pants of course but it leads me more toward either in- store shopping or easy returns by the time you factor in figuring out what size in what brand and style plus which shoes work- even variations amongst tennis shoes.

Well, no one said styling is easy!
