The way you describe your hair Laura I would think you would have lots of options. Wavy thick hair would work so well in a lob. There are lots of variations of the lob out there. Maybe when we see your current style we can get a better idea.
I like a no fuss hair style myself.

Angie, I'll try to upload a recent picture soon. It's not very different from how it's been for the last few years.

Kg, I don't like my hair too done either. Thus my struggle - aiming for a balance between done and overdone. I'd prefer to spend 15 minutes or less each day, and anything too architectural will not work with my wavy thick hair.

I think there are five things to consider Laura (nice to see you too:))

Your natural hair - how does it sit, what styles work.

How much time you are prepared to spend on a daily basis.

Your style preferences/work requirements

What suits you

Money/upkeep needed

I don't like my hair to be too styled - too straight, too blonde, too avant garde etc (I like this on others). I have thick slightly wavy hair that sits well in a short style with minimal effort. I pay for regular cuts and colours and am lazy in between times (sometimes I blow dry, other times I air dry).
I have friends and family that look superb with their afro or sharp bob, but neither of these would work on my hair or personality.

(I know we've discussed all the baggage associated with various views on hairstyles and grooming, especially as it intersects with ethnicity and such. I'm not really focused on that in this instance but looking for some practical advice or ideas.) I'm in the beginning stages of looking for a new job and possibly changing career areas fairly dramatically. I've freelanced from home for several years and didn't need to look any particular way for work except for the very occasional meeting. Any future jobs will probably be more formal; then again, basically everything is more formal than 'Silicon Valley freelancer at home'.

My hair at the moment is shoulder length and slightly layered. It's a graying brown that I had been highlighting but have now switched to all-over color because of cost. It's wavy and fairly thick, although not as much as it used to be when I was younger. I'm not particularly skilled with blowouts or fancy styling but I'm not a complete loss either.

I suppose I'm looking for advice for the holy grail of hair - nice looking, relatively easy to maintain, not too pricey to get cut/colored, doesn't make me look too old or too young (I'll be 41 this month, for reference). I realize this is terribly vague, but any suggestions?
