Jenni--yes, for me I guess I don't worry about trends disappearing, partly because I shop so much on Poshmark. If I wanted burgundy boots two years from now, I would just search that and probably find some. But I guess it's harder with more specific trends.

Burgundy is a lovely color I don't find often and when I do it's usually in the fall and winter collections. Here's burgundy items I've added the past couple of years.

Great replies, thank you all! Carol, I’m intrigued by your idea of possibly waiting until a trend is over before buying it. That would work for thrifting, when perhaps a season or two or three down the road people would be editing that trend out. But I think I would be too scared (if I really loved a trend or especially a colour) that it might disappear again before I could snap it up! Which is why I think Brooklyn bought heaps of burgundy recently. For instance, I love cobalt, and saw some a few years ago, purchased some ballet flats, but now maybe because of all the brown I am not seeing it.
Yes Jaime maybe there is always a bit of it around. Yours is pretty Bijou but like for me it may not really be in your seasonal palette. Lovely dress Lyn67 and maybe your theory about the light is correct?! Certainly early autumn here does feel a lot like summer.
Wow Natalie you really are a Queen Burgundy along with Brooklyn! I think you’re a Winter seasonal palette though and I am a Bright Spring, it’s not really in mine, a brighter red suits me better. I especially like your tulle skirt.
I might add to this thread later when even more is in our stores, if that happens.

Um hello--Queen Burgundy (as Angie dubbed me) checking in here! I'm totally head over heels for burgundy and oxblood! You should try some Jenni! (Oh and Suz--I just realized I had that Vince shirtdress back in the day. I don't know what happened to it, must have gotten purged at some point, but I wish I had it back now! IDK if it would fit though).

Just wanted to say—it’s no surprise, Jenni, that burgundy isn’t as popular in the Southern Hemisphere. You probably have many more bright, sunny hours even in fall (am I right?), so you don’t really get those dim, moody light conditions that make a color like burgundy feel just right. And I imagine your window to wear it is shorter, too.

I’ve always loved burgundy, but for me it’s strictly been a fall/winter color. I’ve mostly had it in knits and worn it with denim or dark bottoms(mostly black and charcoal). Lately, though, I’ve been craving a piece for the cooler days of spring as well. The color was always easy to find in stores for fall and winter, but this is the first year I’ve really noticed it offered for spring.

Now I have my eye on a mixed-media, short-sleeve midi dress—poplin skirt with a rib-knit bodice—so I can wear a full column of color. I’m just not sure how it will look with a bit of skin showing on my pale arms and legs, but I have seen a similar dress on a lady last spring and loved it.

I love the richness of burgundy, but with my colouring, it makes me look pale especially when worn with my favourite winter neutral, black. This is what I have in my wardrobe. The burgundy cropped vinyl jacket works for me because it is shiny and the scarf because it combines lots of different colours. The burgundy sweater is about 6 years old and still in great condition because I rarely wear it, that item has been a good reminder that burgundy is not a colour I enjoy wearing even if I love it on others.

Over the last two years I have added pink, red and cobalt to my wardrobe, enjoying that those colours have also been available at retail and more within my preferred colour palette.

I think burgundy is always around in the autumn but has been especially trending along with brown for a few years. It is a color that should suit me but doesn't always, probably because it can lean warmer or cooler. Fun seeing everyone's burgundy collections!

I remember it being big only this last fall/winter in the U.S. Along with chocolate brown. Both beautiful colors, but when a trend is in effect I tend to wait until it is over.

The good thing about burgundy is whether you love it, or approach it tentatively, it is a solid classic that you will be able to wear in so many environments.

If I were to pick out burgundy items that I really wanted, that would probably be leather tall boots (with heels?), leather gloves, or maybe a felt hat, or something.

Suz, great collection, I especially like your Theory suit and paisley pop scarf. Kellygirl, yes, this is stuff for our upcoming Fall/Autumn I have seen, I haven’t really seen summer stuff like sandals but Brooklyn is seeing it in Australia so there is probably some here too. My eyes probably skate over it.
Wow, Brooklyn, amazing! I especially like that sort of leafy H&M skirt, and your Oroton bag. Yes, so you have been seeing it more about 3 years, same as Suz. Some of it does lean more brown ish. Like Sal I would want a warmer version if I were to get any.
JamC I well remember! The top and pants matched so well! Like Suz your purchases were mid 00s and mid 20s (that feels weird to write mid 20s, feels like it should be 100 years ago.)
Lise, that’s fun you are wearing your burgundy items a lot.
Dee, yes last 3 years or so for you as well. Angie, you’ve certainly written about it more since 2023, before that it was more like 2015.
Sal, it seems you might not have noticed it that much either so perhaps I am correct and there hasn’t been a lot here. I saw shoes in Mi Piaci and clothing in Seed.
I owned the most beautiful patent burgundy dress shoes in 2004 but my feet must have changed a bit, the shoes became tight and I donated them. The oldest shoes I have kept apart from one vintage pair are from 2010 now.

Interesting Jenni - I don’t wear much burgundy but I do like it. I need a
Warmer toned one. I haven’t added anything burgundy in over recent seasons but I haven’t been looking for it. My last was a summer dress in 2021.

We tend to see all shades and tones of burgundy here in the US - and usually in the Autumn and Winter. More recently in the Spring and Summer too, as Brooklyn mentions. Seasonal palettes collide!

My own burgundy items are between 4 and 10 years old. It's not a colour I frequently wear, although I do wear it! Like you Jenni, I prefer a much brighter red.

Most of the burgundy items that I currently own were acquired in the last 3 or 4 years. I've bought nothing new in burgundy this season. Its pretty much a fall/winter colour in these parts. I was at Winner's / Marshalls recently and the sales racks had quite a bit of burgundy items reduced as the spring/ summer season will slowly be making its way into the stores. I personally dont wear much burgundy come spring and summer, it just feels rather heavy and I'm always ready to lighten things up with the warmer weather.

As I hardly ever shop new I cannot really say if burgundy is a thing here on the Black Sea. I do know that I am loving it lately. My burgundy items include straight cords, two knits and a handbag. They are having a lot of wears this winter. I would love warm weather pieces if they cross my path. I would love burgundy boots too but cannot justify another pair currently.

I think it’s always been around here in Autumn/Winter. More prevalent in the last few years. I have seriously stocked up over the last couple of years. I think what’s new is that it’s now around as a summer colour. I have bought tees, tanks and (summer) skirts in burgundy. I’ve seen lots of burgundy linen pants, summer dresses, vests, sandals, summer bags too. Retail editorials talking about “summer burgundy”. Some of the burgundies available lean brownish. Possibly that’s linked to the dark brown trend. But I’ve seen lots of reddish or wine leaning burgundies too. Happy days for us burgundy fans

You're right -- burgungy's been more prevalent for the last three or four. years up here, I think. Different burgundies (some brighter, some browner in tone) but the truth is, it's usually available every autumn to some extent. Less commonly it is available in spring/summer items.

My burgundy items will demonstrate:

1. BR sweater late 2025
2/3 Theory vest suit 2023
4. Aritzia pants (now retired) 2023
5. Scarf -- 2017?
6. Other scarf -- 2016?
7. Bag -- 2016
8. Sweater 2015
9. Dress (now a blouse) 2015

I tend to go for the more "cranberry" toned burgundies when I can, but I like them all!

Today is said to be the hottest day of our summer so far, so after dropping off my pink 2024 top to the tailor to finally get it shortened (will cost $29, hope she does a good job) I wandered through the mall and then had a walk around the edge of our lovely local lake, as that was mostly in the shade. Despite the hot day the stores have just started displaying some Autumn items (which we count as starting 1 March). Now on the blog and forum (I checked) there was more about burgundy from early 2023 onwards. 3 years ago! Maybe we’re really backward here as well as Down Under?!
What do other Kiwis and Aussies think?
I don’t have much, think I prefer a brighter red. I noticed some nice shoes and boots in the stores. Not sure that I will get into it.
When did it trend in the US and Canada?
