I’m totally late to this, but I absolutely agree with the sized-down second one. I’m sensitive about emphasizing hips/upper thighs too, and I think the proper size creates a better length!

Thanks Toban, La P, Isabel, Aida, Aquamarine, Joy

Jenni NZ agree about Angie's comments being so instructive. I ALWAYS learn something from her comments and she does it in a way that make you feel so positive! Lots of fabbers also offer very instructive comments. Yeah that shrinking thing seems to happen with age unless you do a lot of yoga. One of my yoga instructors said she gained more than an inch in height during the time she was studying to be a yoga instructor. :-)

Angie great point that you see all the various body types IRL without the distortion of selfie photos. Thanks so much for the kind words, as always.

Gigi you nailed it, I do love to try on styles that are a little outside my norm. It's one part playing dress up and one part looking for new ideas.

Style Fan I think you hit on something really important here. Think about what you see when you approach someone on the street. If it's a friend you are mostly looking at their eyes, not some specific body part. If it's a stranger maybe you look at a body part but more likely you focus on the overall appearance to enjoy their outfit (or not), or some other people-watching thing, but it's less about body parts than the whole. Others really don't see what we see ourselves. In the typical body-criticism thing most of us do, we hone right in on something we don't like when we look at ourselves, and a good deal of the time it's something no one else sees! . I've been trying very hard to retrain my thinking about this and give that criticism thing a rest, with some success, but it's not an easy thing for most of us that live in cultures where it's "the norm". My view is to think about how flattering an outfit or garment is, do the analysis, then wear what you like!

Love #4. I also like how you have styled it. I did not notice that the cardigan ended at your upper thighs because it is drawing the eye up and down.
I always look at pictures of myself and zero in on my upper thighs which are the widest part of my body. Does everyone look at me this way? Probably not.

Love the new size on you! I liked the ruffled one as well, but as you stated in your update, I thought it was maybe a little too "pretty" for your overall style. But it was fun to at least try on the ruffled one. It helps you refine your style when you try on different things that you wouldn't ordinarily buy.

YAY, Chris. The smaller size of the ombre cardi - #4 - is KILLER PERFECT. You have really found your style and blossomed this last month. It's ALL coming together. WELL DONE.

The updated size in photo #4 looks super. I've a hunch anything you'd want to wear the ruffly one in you'd just as well pair with the one in #4 so it may get orphaned, especially if you're already thinking it may be too sweet. I vote send the ruffle cardi back and just keep #4

The difference of opinion is interesting.

Maybe it's because Angie has so much more experience with different body types actually trying the clothes on in person rather than photos? So she has a more multi dimensional view of how they'll read in real life?

Sometimes we simply see things differently, Chris. Some see #2 as "hip-widening*, whereas I see it as tailored and complementing your natural shape in the very best way. The ombre effect creates diagonal lines that do magical things. The length is good for your petite height. A very flattering silhouette that glides over your curves with sass, ease and elegance.

the Cat, I agree with your very detailed comments. Thanks!

Jenni Z I agree that on a petite it's best not to have a top with a hem that hits below the widest part of the body, although some petites can do it well. For my pear-shaped curvy body I think it's better if the hem hits
just a bit ABOVE that widest point. Technically the widest part of my body is my upper thighs, not my hips. Any creation of a high-contrast horizontal line across that widest point is a no-no for me. If I'm wearing a light top and dark bottom that horizontal line must be just a little bit above that widest point, which puts more of the focus on leg length and to my eye looks a whole lot better. It's taken me a while to figure this out, and it really works well for me. I've rejected a number of white/cream pullover sweaters that I wanted to wear with jeans because the sweater created that horizontal line. Sometimes with a flowy top like a blouse I bend that rule a little. I'm really short (5'1") so this rule might be a little less important for someone my same shape and a little taller. For a low contrast look like the burgundy/black sweater shown here with burgundy pants I often relax the rule a bit but I still do not like outfits that draw the eye downward too much.

As I said earlier I've ordered #2 in a size down and will try that once it arrives.

Keep those comments coming!

Yeah I wondered about that too. I was impressed with myself that I liked the same one Angie did! Probably just chance... I kind of see what the others are saying about where it finishes though. But you and I have a similar shape and sometimes as petites I still think we might be better off to have the garments finishing at our widest point rather than looking too long on us and kind of drowning us? What do you think?
It's up to you which one you like best though isn't it? Or which two?

#2 brings attention to your hips and make them look wider.
#3 has a lot of extra fabric which is creating bulk and is stealing the attention from YOU.
Of these three ones, #1 definitely which looks best on you. The length is flattering. And the collar creates balance by bringing attention to your upper body. This is the one which makes you look most well-proportioned and slim, if that matters to you. (You may have other priorities, and of course, that's OK. )
However, there may be other cardigans out there which look even better. My advice would be:
- Be aware of the length (don't choose cardigans etc. which stops at your widest point)
- Go for interesting collars, shoulders or other details on your upper body
- Skip superfluous details/fabric elsewhere
