Mine is cashmere and done in the pink version of Burberry's print with fringe (so it's longer and narrower and has fringe along all the edges). I wear mine casually often with a lot of different outfits and I find it works especially well as a contrasting pattern or color to the rest of the outfit -- or sometimes to create a bookending effect with some pink boots (as shown in photos I've attached). Plus it just does a fabulous job of keeping the back of my neck warm without being scratchy, so that right there makes me love it!

I bought it at the flea market --it's relatively easy to tell the real Burberry scarves from the faux by feel (something you can't do on ebay but you can do IRL at a flea market.

I have my eye on one huge silk number - in Australia $500, so a bit to think about. But I do have a beautiful Hermes bought "gently used" and Max Mara silk chiffon white and grey (bought new) - my favourite. I have about 50 scarves (may be more) some for more than 40 years. Do I see value in a good quality scarf? Yes and I buy it if I can afford it - I get an immense pleasure from handling beautiful things.

I got my Fauxberry scarf at the flea market... usually I cannot stand brand logos and have an even worse allergic reaction to FAKE logos. But like others, I have been won over by the history and mystique of the brand - not just the evolution of a company, but all the films and iconic characters and such. For me, sort of the grown up equivalent of wearing a tee shirt advertising a favorite musical group. I couldn't resist the chance to test drive the colors against my skin tone. Someday I'll have to get a real one to keep my trench company.

Many of the posts capture my position. Brand names used to repel me, because I don't want someone to be paying to advertise; I also don't want to attract muggers or thieves. Moreover, when it comes to the classic Burberry scarf, I'm a cool pink pale, with medium hair and light eyes, and the beiges just wash me out, even when I'm feeling charitable toward them.

That said, I really love the quality I've seen in Burbeerry. The fabrics, colours, construction, the feel against my skin.

I just don't want it to be recognized because I feel like I'll be judged by my peers (grad students) for spending so much money on clothing instead of squirrelling it away. That sounds silly, but there it is.

Of course it is easily identifiable, which - I would wager a guess - is why it is so popular with most people and so commonly faked. But Angie makes a good point, and many people feel that way about various designer houses. The items are high quality and will last a lifetime.

And I can hardly talk, as Alexander McQueen scarves are my addiction. I have several (many not the easily identifiable skull print), and they also feel divine (100% silk) and have lasted for many years.

Regarding sales, there sometimes are, but it is rare that the most popular Burberry scarves go on sale, from my experience. For example, the classic tartan in cashmere is rarely on sale, but the other colours sometimes are. Tartan doesn't go with my style at all (unless they are red plaid pants, more punk styling), but I can see it as a classic, forever kind of item.

I'm with you, Mo, in feeling ambivalent about the Burberry check/tartan. The pattern is trademarked (although not legally so in some countries such as China) and has been associated with the company since the 20's when it was used to line the company's trench coats.

My feelings about wearing the check/tartan as an accessory, though, are really colored by its association with a particular football subculture--often called "chavs" in the UK. To me, the check still looks fine when it is used in its original purpose as a lining, but I can't shake the association when I see the check in a hat, scarf, belt, or other accessory. As this article in the Economist points out, though, the "chav" association isn't global, so the accessories still sell well in other countries.
http://www.economist.com/node/.....d=17963363

While the real product, like Angie's scarf, is definitely high quality, I'd rather spend my funds on something that isn't quite as identifiable. But that's just me, and, as Angie says, horses for courses. And Anna is right about the plethora of fake Burberry items in the market.

There are billions of beautiful tartans Mo, and I love most of them. But there is only one instantly recognizable Burberry tartan - it has been patented - that is associated with the brand, and therefore the legacy behind it. For me it's a personal tribute to the fashion house. I wear the tartan not only because I love the design, but because I support the legacy behind the brand and what it stands for today. The same way I proudly wear the embossed C's on my Chanel bag because really - there is no one in the fashion world who has made as much of a contribution than Coco herself. She made pants wearable for women. Enough said. I support her legacy with all my heart. I want these legacies to continue, which is also why I only wear original Chuck Taylor Converse, original design Rayban Wayfarers - and I am back to only wearing original Dr. Martens. I don't expect that to make sense to everyone, but it makes sense to me - and I'm the one wearing the item. There is peace in my heart about it. Perhaps it makes some sense to you too.

Okay. You made it through my ramble. xo

makes sense. Again, I don't like plaid, so I think my bias lies there.

EDIT: but as a rube, I have to ask, what makes this tartan different or better than others? Is it trademarked? Is it an 'in the know' between wearers thing? I think that's what I don't get. Because to me, plaid is plaid is plaid, ya know? Is it the branding factor in play.

Mo, I love tartan, and I love the Burberry Tartan. I support the legacy of the fashion house. I respect that it came from humble beginnings and grew into a unique force. It impresses me that as the house continues to evolve its fashion with young and creative designers - the tartan has stayed the same. I proudly wear the tartan, and will have it forever. It will not date.

I am not a plaid kinda gal, but I have to say the allure of a 'known' designer print scarf escapes me. Is it the colors? The texture? Or that others know what you're wearing? I'm truly lost, especially since beige isn't the best color on a lot of people.
I remember 2 xmas's ago seeing this lady in Miami South Beach and thinking - this is matchy matchy to a whole new level! At the time, I didn't realize the 'significance' of the print.

About ten years ago I bought a 36 inch silk square in the classic tan. I still love it...I usually wear it with tan pants and a black blazer, along with a white shirt or a black and white striped shirt. Great quality, nice beefy twill with the plump hems. I also have a neckerchief with a white background and black checks. Then, this year, I bought a Burberry plaid cashmere muffler in the most beautiful shade of blue...kind of periwinkle. The quality puts the Charter Club (Macy's), cashmere scarves to shame. Best part is, I used my Nordstrom notes and it didn't cost me a cent!

Grad fashion, I think the shape and the fabric all depend on how you are planning to wear the scarf. For an outerwear/ keep me warms scarfs, I like a long recatangle. I feel it gives me the most options.
My Burberry scarf was actually my dads, and it's a great wool,in the tradional plaid.

I wouldn't buy a Burberry scarf from eBay. WAY too many fakes out there.
I actually got mine from a sample sale site.
But right now, Burberry is having a sale on their website. There are some scarves on there.

I have a navy plaid cashmere Burberry scarf that I absolutely love. In fact, the one I have now is a replacement for a much older but identical one that finally wore out. I bought my current one about a year ago on eBay at about half the retail price. It was new with tags, and I wear it a lot. I haven't looked recently, but eBay usually has lots of Burberry scarves. Navy is one of my favorite colors, and this scarf is a real workhorse.

For those who own one, did you opt for the square or scarf, wool or wool blend? And when choosing a colour, did you select a beige variation over a darker colour (blue/teal, magenta, etc.)? How does the quality of the scarf compare to J. Crew, etc.? Has the scarf prompted you to avoid patterned shirts, of do you find the scarf works well with them? And lastly, once you found what you were looking for, did you hold off purchasing it, in the hope that it would go on sale? The fabric and colours on the website are simply stunning, but I'm wondering how misleading they are.

Reflections and advice most welcome.
