They have a shop across the road from the building and wrecking yard where they sell the parts. It is a busy place! </p> <p>A local production line for baked goods sends imperfect goods to a pig farm for animal feed. </p> <p>There is a Re-Home store run by Habitat for Humanity that takes recyclable items from demolition work (bathtubs, light fixtures, etc.) and furniture.</p> <p>There is another place that sells salvedged goods like wrought iron, gingerbread trim, wooden doors, cast iron planters, etc.</p> <p>And another place that paints and re-upholsters old furniture and runs workshops that teach people to do the same with their old treasures.</p> <p>A fellow down the road collects old metal - shovels, rakes, golf clubs, etc. For his sculptures.</p> <p>The quilt below (made by me) is mostly from samples that a draper was going to throw out! I have enough hexagons cut out to make another the same size! The backs of most of my quilts are pieced from remnants and donated fabrics (some vintage from estates.). I will work pretty small, and compost scraps. </p> <p>Could it not be a job for some workers to deconstruct unsold items for recycling? I'm seeing patchwork leather skirts and reconstructed jeans on the runway. Then the companies can boost the prices to cover the extra labour and exclusivity of the unique items! I would go to that museum. (We live in a strange world where we can price an object like it's fine art, yet treat it like it's disposable...)&nbsp;</p> <p>I can think of many more productive things they could do with their discards -- at least some portion of them. But it's an overwhelming amount of material. They're preserving exclusivity and, like Anna said, possibly recouping costs on unsold items (which they cannot do without destroying them). And for anyone who has purchased a luxury brand, not seeing prices slashed by half or more and not commonly seeing the items in a TJ Maxx DOES contribute to the feeling that the purchase is "worth it". No one would pay what they do for LV or Burberry or Gucci if the companies routinely donated items.&nbsp;</p> <p>I know, for myself, that I need to reduce the amount overall that I consume in terms of clothing and fashion before I can even begin to be upset about this issue. I am actively contributing to the waste coming out of the fashion industry overall, although it is mostly at a lower price point than Burberry. There is a Canadian coat maker (Sentaler) who's site I visited because I saw a lovely coat worn by Meghan Markle (now Duchess of Sussex.). They are trying to be sustainable luxury, and work with responsibly sourced alpaca, etc. - and they are taking ORDERS with a 6 week delivery date.
