Synne, you’re the best! That’s exactly the edge I want to walk—playful and energetic, not Amy Sedaris in Strangers With Candy.

That's adorable! It really works, in my eyes. You do suit the "ingenue" style very much. I'm also thinking it's a delicate balance, not to overdo it, so it doesn't ends up theatrical or verging on costume ("school girl"). I remember an outfit you posted a while ago where this was the case. Interesting to follow your style evolution Fash!! Looking great!

Thanks Zaeobi! I wish I could wear that jacket now, but expect it’s a Hong Kong winter kind of thing, whereas my climate is more like the UK’s. I actually have the necklace on in that pic, cleverly hidden under the raspberry top <eyeroll>.

Here’s the latest version, running with that cream theme with an Intimissimi top and the North Face jacket I got for Christmas. Not much of a column of color anymore, but I tried to pick up the pale theme with the boots. They are short, but perhaps chunky enough to ground the outfit solidly. What do you think? Thumbs up on cranberries and cream, or is this too much contrast?

Red jacket and black boots version coming soon.

Ooh I like the necklace but that might just be because I'm a gold magpie, lol. Maybe worn over a plain berry top in #2 instead of #1 (so it doesn't compete with the brown)?

I like the berry column & don't think the cream competes, just because it is a neutral & is indeed included in the skirt pattern. But you know I'm fairly maximalist, so am probably not much help in avoiding ALGO

I think part of the reason that the apple picking outfit worked was the proportions - cropped jacket & high-waisted skirt met at a similar point (can you call a skirt high-rise?) Agree that you shouldn't sacrifice comfort for style, but also agree that the current leather jackets feel a bit overwhelming (think their hip length coupled with the short skirt means there's ALGO in that area?). Maybe the long cream cardigan you mentioned could work instead?

I prefer the taller boots too, but the booties still work too thanks to the berry coloured tights & skirt (those tights are so opaque but brightly coloured - & thermal! Looks like I need to check out Calzedonia, lol...)

Thanks Angie! When my hair is short, it doesn’t have much body; I’m curious what you’ll discover in yours as you grow it out. Looking at your faves, would you suggest I pair the boots from 15 with either 2 or 3? Red jacket, and then the cream-colored accessories, or the plaid scarf?

Bijou, thanks! I just wish I could predict when my hair was going to do this and when it will most definitely not.

The column of deep dark red with the red boots works well! #2 is my fave. Super cute! I like #3 and #15 next.

May I suggest your shorter brown jacket because it works so well with skirts. Your short red puffer might work too. Less heavy and long.

You have amazingly thick hair with a lovely wave :)

A long burgundy coat would be amazing, but I don’t have one. I considered the knee-length navy one, but then everything is covered up. I agree with you that the heavy leather jackets are….heavy. The one I have on in 4&5 isn’t as big as the black one, so maybe it’s the better (but not great) choice here

Which shoes are you voting for, Synne?

Yes, there you have it! 1 and 2 has the same vibe as the apple outfit. Beautiful!

I see what your trying to do with the leather jacket, (in theory so good juxtaposition), but it looks too heavy and stiff to me. And the black sort of kills the very vibrant other colours?

How about going for something longer? I was about to say, something floor sweeping, dramatic, long and flowy? A long burgundy coat, that would be something!

Oh dang, sorry, I meant a cream complement with hat/SCARF/mitts, for the outside version p. No need for a sweater! I was trying to work with the options you offered.

And yes, brown jacket as in 6-7 since you said that was more weather appropriate than the cognac. Needs must! Don’t want you catching cold.

I think the indoor version works sans necklace! The tan/cran contrast adds interest.

I like 21 and 17 best… also, in general, i prefer the tall boots with the jackets, feel the visual weight of the jackets needs to be balanced, but the quirky hat works with the ankle boots because you sort of have a balance of quirky bookending…

Thanks Sarah! You’re always so good at analyzing these things—I appreciate you chiming in!

This is what the indoor version looks like, sans necklace. Might be plenty going on as is.

You mean the brown jacket in 6 & 7, or a different one?

I’ll have to think about a cream sweater—have one that’s much too long, a hoodie that probably has too much brown in it, a Nic & Zoey cardi that can be a waterfall when open but isn’t too long in back, and the loosely crocheted Baja topper. Also a new North Face fuzzy fleece jacket. It’s long, but zips all the way down—I could leave it open. Nothing else comes to mind, but I’ll keep thinking. This is why people have wardrobe apps, isn’t it?

The cream was a big question in my mind with the original post. It’s harmonious with the cranberry and brown, and there is cream in the skirt, but it is a third color.

That is a nice base outfit you've got there!

I vote for brown jacket to tie in a little better with the bag and shoes. And a complement of cream hat/sweater/mitts.

You could also try extending the cream complement to include the white boots. Not sure what that would do to the coat/bag situation.

Or, black boots and jacket, cream accessories, and then the cognac bag becomes its own little pop (more like the red bag in the apple picking outfit.

I think part of what made the apple picking outfit so successful was its restraint - it had interest, but not ALGO if you see what I mean. Also there were complements (for lack of a better word) where 3 or more elements related to each other in some unified way - rather than x relates to y, y relates to z but does not tie in with x.

With restraint in mind I think I'd also lose the necklace here. Unless you feel it's necessary for the indoor version of the outfit?

Following Synne’s suggestion to ask what works in my “apple picking” outfit and WHY, I got such wonderful comments https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....es-it-work that I’m inspired to try for a repeat, so here goes. Please help me pick the options that work best by mixing and matching pieces from these pix.

I started with a little skirt I love. It’s not much more than a ruffle on my butt, really. I’m making a column of color/pseudo skirted leggings with fleece-lined tights here, but could do the same with Uniqlo leggings. Pix 16&17 are the leggings. The tights are warmer, but the leggings probably look more substantial.

Combining lots of textures was the easy part in winter. I tried to keep it to just two colors, brown and cranberry, but the jackets & accessories I have made that difficult.

It’s too cold out for my suede jacket, so I tried two different leather jackets: a black motorcycle jacket that’s oversized on me but that narrows at the waist & has a very visible zipper, and a very dark brown aviator jacket with a welt at the waist so it blouses out a little.

I tried two different scarves: a long cream-colored one my mom knit for me and a berry plaid mohair one my grandma bought me in Scotland in the 80s.

What do you think of the cream-colored hat & mittens? Someone commented once that they were getting scraggly. I’m not sure if they meant the fringe is bunched up, or if they didn’t realize there was fringe on it & thought the hat was falling apart. I could sub in my new bucket hat. Then I’d wear simple black gloves, or maybe my tan/black leopard prints gloves.
ETA 2 pics at the end where I try these other accessories. (I’m not trying to riverdance or show off the label; I just don’t know how to stand still). I think the new hat might be too jaunty to wear with the skirt. The velvet hat and cord skirt are very close in color, but together I think they’re too much. I might wear the leopard gloves & either the cream hat or my black boucle.

For boots, I could go higher (white) or lower (red) contrast.

The T-neck, coincidentally, is the same one I have on in my apple-tree pic. I could do a white or navy T-neck instead.

Cardi with buttons in front or back?

Other options would be the pale pink sweater and black lace-up boots I paired with it at the start of the pandemic. (Pix 14-17)

The outdoor pic is what I went with today, but I’m not sure it’s the best combo. The welted bomber jacket would probably be better. I have got to learn to take off the bike lock for photos!!

Thanks for looking, and for any suggestions and analysis.
