Oh, I’m just seeing this when I posted about my search for the perfect beach cover up! So I can relate to the search for an ideal trip capsule. Your trip sounds amazing!

One thing I love is a tote than can function as a great carry-on for the plane AND a beach bag. My straw bag is slowly dying, so the hunt for a new one is on. It’s hard to find something beachy and light and at least a little stylish that also has a zip closure. Straw bags now are all open top, or scratchy and cheap looking. So I may try a canvas bag instead next time.

You've got lots of good advice from everyone already, but I'll add some from my times packing for international beach trips & post-hike dips in the sea (something I'll miss about HK, for sure!) :

1) ~ Pure 100% cotton does not dry quickly, so I'd recommend either a blend for your cover-up, or something like viscose if you don't like linen (BONUS: Mine is printed, so it's easy care & coordinates with solids easily).

2) ~ Magnetic hat clips are a lifesaver for carry-on bag limits (no need to pack away your sunhat, but you can still go handsfree)! Mine is Klipsta but Amazon has other brands (though I believe TopTote is the originator):
https://klipsta.com/products/h.....9614350433

Hope that helps, & that you have fun in the sun

As usual I pick from some items I have had a very long time. In 2013 I bought a bright floral one-piece swimsuit with bright floral matching wrap. The swimsuit has died long since but the wrap seems indestructible, so since then when buying another swimsuit I get something that is in similar colours so it still goes with the wrap. I also have a bright kaftan from 2016 as a cover-up. And a loose shirt with bright flowers from 1997!
I did assume that these items could go from pool or beach to drinks or dinner but have found I prefer to shower before dinner to get rid of sand or chlorine, so I usually take a cotton maxi dress and/or cool top/white pants. My current pairs of shorts are both linen, one white one “silver birch” colour which is good with my silver hair. Gold jandals and a couple of pairs of flat sandals which can dress up or down also, plus one large floppy hat and one concertina sun hat with elephants on that came from Thailand 2010. I guess it shows that if you know your taste well, you can make some things work for many years. I don’t mind keeping them for that capsule which is only used every so often.

What a great getaway!

I used to go to yearly conferences tgat pinged between being held in big city conference centers or beachy resort centers. So for awhile I collected sort of resort- business-casual capsule.

I MIGHT have a beach trip this year with some GF’s.

But regardless, you’ve inspired me to SYC pretty soon ( before required) and identify a group of items that have “ beachy/ resort potential “. I imagine this to be a spectrum of things, a loose capsule or overlapping capsule, not every single item coordinating but from which tighter capsules could be created.

I am most comfortable in pants or shorts so focus on lightweight fabrics and summery palettes plus remembering how black works for me in short- sleeved tops as not so draining. A bit less on exotic resort wear, but being able to dress quickly , feel comfortable and coordinated , neither sloppy nor fussy. I also still enjoy my black Sweaty Betty dress. And last year I finally found a knee- length linen button- front shirt collar cover up.

Anyway, I think I have a lot of options if I take some time to take pics of how I would want to wear what with what—proportions, colors—in order to be able to choose a tight capsule for packing, instead of panicking.

It’s also a good way to weed out items that , in try- on sessions, don’t really seem to go with anything anymore. Or, see a wardrobe hole.

A decade or so ago we visited Kauai. I had ordered mix and match swim suit pieces in navy and white from Lands End which were great, and a navy and white polka dot loose long cotton dress as a cover up. I think it would have been great, too, if I had remembered to pack it! Anyway, they might be worth checking out.

I learned the hard way to avoid black and dark colors for anywhere beachy. Packed darks stay packed and are not worn unless you want to stand out in a sea of brights. Make sure your capsule looks and feels right in bright sun.

Yes to Walaroo hats! Some beachy travel must haves for me are my Ripskirt, gold Birks, and tankini that can double as a regular top. Flowy skirts (reversable sari skirts are great) and a skort for active activities too.

What a wonderful gift! Have fun. :)

For packable hats, I’ve been really happy with my Wallaroo, an Angie rec several years back.

https://wallaroohats.com/colle.....st-selling

If I were going to build a true resort capsule, I’d probably look at beachy surf-inspired brands like Faherty, Marine Layer, and Outerknown. My go-to coverups are cotton gauze and linen shirts, plus loose linen pants/skirts. I like the flexibility: you can wear either piece on its own over a swimsuit, or wear both for full sun coverage and a proper outfit.

What an amazing gift! I hope you have a fabulous time.

I have not had a true beach holiday for...well...decades! But I love the suggestions you've had so far and I like what you have already assembled.

I do go to a cabin on a stone beach (where I do swim and ramble, but don't lounge around on the beach itself). The requirements for that kind of holiday are a bit different (it also involves daily hikes in the woods) and the climate is not a very hot one, so my needs for coverage differ. But many of the kinds of items I keep at the ready are the same.

Lovely to see you post again, notsaf! What an incredible gift! WOW :)

Capsule looks good.

FWIW, if you are very sun-unfriendly like me - you need to wear covered items for sun and heat protection, in lightweight cottons, silks and blends. And a hat all the time! I could only wear sleeveless at night - in the shade.

Beach coverups for me, are best when they create coverage. Long linen shirt dress is my top choice. And sandals you can wear on the beach that you can wash off with water.

I do well with broad packable hats that I pack in hand luggage.

A jacket for a/c is a great idea too!

Sounds like a wonderful bonus vacation and good plan. I once thrifted a Helen Kaminski woven bag that was packable. Just a name to check on the second hand market. (DD destroyed it but that was not the bag's fault.)

Like Sal, I wear my Panama hat on the plane, but I pack the Tilley in my bag. It can handle the crushing and actually goes through the washing machine when it’s soiled! Though the Panama screams ‘Holiday!’ To me, I probably wear the Tilley more. It’s lightweight, cool, and has strings that can be tied under the chin for windy days (I tuck them in the brim otherwise.)

Love your capsule!

The pieces I wore most on our three week beach vacation are below. I like also a rash shirt and shorts ( I wear bike type shorts) for water activities as well as nice swimsuits and cover ups. I wear the striped shirt as well as two I don’t have pictured. I like EVA birks for the beach.

We tend to be Uber casual in the day then shower and have drinks, nibbles, bbq etc. We rarely go out to bars or restaurants. I take a couple of sets of active wear too and sneakers.

I like one wide brim hat and one cap for walking or kayaking. I often wear my hat onto the plane if I am flying - but usually we are going by car. I do have one hat that is sort of packable but it’s pretty casual - see photo on the beach.

I really like the cover ups pictured!!

I like cotton gauze instead of linen, so I have a short dress and a couple of tops in that fabric. Same for a cover up, which in my case is more or less a square poncho. I have a long knit sleeveless print dress for going out in the evening, and a couple of pashminas for over enthusiastic AC. And a hat of course. Water shoes and gladiators were my footwear for Mexico.

#1 Linen and performance fabrics
#2 Swim suit cover-ups that double as dresses. (Tunic, shirt waist, Mexican wedding dress, etc.)
#3 Black, white, and striped are classics and not out of place - but do get one ‘bright for you’ (solid or print), even if it’s not something you would normally go for.
#4 Plastic (or whatever) flip flops. Sun, sand, salt water, chlorine, sweat - will ruin good leather. Save leather for pm or going into town, though you still might end up walking along the beach with your sandals dangling from your fingers.
#5 I used a LePliage as a beach tote. Light weight. You can dump it upside down to get the sand out, and turn it inside out to wipe it down (or hose it off!) Drinks sweat, sunscreen leaks. Plus, there’s a zipper.

#6 it’s always good to have a pair of performance shorts and a camp shirt for hikes, day trips, or sportier occasions.

#7 a light weight cotton sweater for pm
#8 one or two hats with brims that work for you

I love my linen shirt dress which I use as a coverup for beach. It’s below my knees and looks good over any swimsuit. Mine is from Massimo Dutti, last year I saw nice ones at Aritzia. I also always bring a linen scarf. Good quality flip flops and a fabric shopper plus a sun hat.
I keep my beach capsule updated and ready. I have a pair of loose linen pants and a long sleeve linen shirt that I hope to test this year. I don’t wear shorts but if I was, shorts and a button down shirt set would be definitely on my list.

I recently was invited by a good friend to be her plus one on a trip to the Caribbean, flight and hotel paid for. What a wonderful gift that was during this gloomy part of the year!

I managed to cobble together a capsule for our four day stay -- you can see it here -- but it left me feeling as though I wanted a bit more ready at hand for this kind of thing. I've been spending more time in Miami, and -- after a month in the southern hemisphere last winter -- am increasingly wanting to plan for beach getaways as a pick-me-up during the darkest winter months.

Finds below are what I have so far for this new capsule. Beyond that, here is my wish-list, so that, over the next months, if the right items come my way I'll know to grab them.

- A beach cover-up -- Have been using button-downs, but would be nice to have something a bit longer

- Double strap sandals -- As I've mentioned before, my favorite leather ones from Vince are past their prime. Does anyone have experience with Freedom Moses?

- A packable straw purse -- For this trip I had one from Bembien from Rent the Runway, but it was a little fragile.

For those of you who do this sort of thing regularly (Carla? Sally?), are there things that I'm missing that you've found useful? Any suggestions for specific items or brands? What have you packed and loved for a beach holiday?
