The good news is that you will have some new shoes. The bad news is that you are going to have to try a lot of brands to figure out what works with your "new" feet. My high volume problem feet like Camper, Naot, El Naturalista, and Dansko (but not Clarks). But that's just me.

Have you looked at a blog called barkingdogshoes.com that reviews and categorizes comfort shoes? It might give you some ideas

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

Rebekah, thanks for the list. I can probably use your casual non-gear shoe as my work shoe, honestly.

Diana, your are exactly right re: dress shoes. Those are hard for me to find in general, and I don't wear them all that often, so I can probably get away with keeping them until the perfect replacement (exactly what I want, in a wide, and on sale) comes around.

Una, your points about the necessities coming first is a good one. I do like variety, but it could probably get away with a smaller set of shoes than I currently own. One pair of good waterproof boots could probably get me through the winter, even I'd be sick of them by spring. Maybe it's time to embrace minimalism.

Ella, your list sounds most like mine. I'm wondering if this might be a good reason to not live in sneakers as much though, hmm...

Carole, thank you for the brand suggestions!!

Gradfashionista, I've never been an UGG fan. Or at least, I wasn't of the older fuzzy slipper boot. Some of their more recent stuff seems a lot more functional so I should probably check them out.

Jem, I can with a few pairs. Sadly, none of my boots have removable insoles and adding one on top of what's there makes them painfully tight. One of the issues with having high-volume feet...

Sorry to hear, although this could end up being a fun challenge. Have you tried Camper or Gentle Souls? I would try UGG boots, but that's not everybody's cup of tea.

Sorry for your shoe dilemma, but happy things are turning around physically! That's the most important thing. I would certainly replace boots first, than add a loafer or closed toed oxford or something similar and a cute fun pair of Nikes or New Balance! I gap have bad feet and bunions and find Clarks, Sofft, Naturalizer super comfortable but I'm sure there are lots of other brands to choose from. You might check out this website for recommendations for problem feet....http://www.barkingdogshoes.com

For me I need a pair of wet weather insulated boots for big snows (tall boots) then would replace booties and sneakers, which are the shoes I really live in day to day all winter. If you live in something different, go there! Depending on how you dress up in winter, booties might cover that too.

I would say buy for the upcoming season as it arrives. So for me this would prob be at least 2 pairs per season. For winter:
--tall boots with traction and preferably waterproof
--lower bootie or mid calf style (moto or combat maybe)
You might also need a real snow boot depending on your commute/location.
I'm guessing for dress up events you would either not be walking a ton, or could change shoes at the venue so you could prob get away with your old pairs for now.

for me, I'd buy the following now and then re-evaluate in the spring (as you may find your comfort levels changing after you get used to the new types of shoes you'll need).
1. casual sneakers/slip ons
2. Ankle boots/tall boots or both
3. Dressy shoes (especially if you work in an office)
4. Casual but not sporty shoes for weekends

Oh man, that's a bummer. But this is a situation where I could embrace the bright side-- new shoes!

One thought-- do any of your shoes have removable insoles? If so, you could probably substitute a new insole instead of buying all new shoes.

Kiwigal, that looks like a good list, thanks! Sales are definitely going to be my friend if I want to but more than two pairs this winter.

Gigi, ha! I'm currently in Alberta, so cold weather gear is super important! But this fall has been one of the nicest and I've been getting away with wearing my loafers for much longer than usual. And I might be moving before the worst of winter, so maybe I can get away with a nice tall boot instead of full-on gear. I should check out Clarks - they tend to be hit or miss for me, but when they work, they're great.

Greyscale, thanks for the recommendation. I've heard good things about Tsubo but never tried them. Fall I'm usually all over the ankle boots, but I usually switch to taller ones for the winter. Or just gear in bad weather. I could probably get away with just one boot though.

I have wide, high volume feet! My boots from Tsubo last year are wonderful. Not quite waterproof, but good for moderate winter weather. Some Tsubo shoes are a little narrow for me, but these boots fit very well, though I went up half a size. I see that there's a new boot this year, too (the Zappos one in my finds below).

I'd guess a pair of ankle or high boots are the most important for the coming season? What shoes do you end up wearing in fall and winter?

Hmmm. When you say winter boots, do you mean snow boots? If this is some serious cold-weater gear, I would vote for making sure that you have some money set aside so that you can get your pick of the boots when they first come out. Since cold-weather boots are so important, you don't want to have to select something from what's been picked over. (Been there, done that!)

I would also probably buy one pair of casual comfortable shoes that are on the dressy side so that I could perhaps get away with wearing them on dressier occasions as well as every day.

After these two practical shoes are taken care of, I would probably buy myself something a little more stylish to wear that would be suitable for cold weather, like some kind of bootie.

I have low-volume feet of average width, so I'm sorry that I can't recommend any brands. Although I have found Clarks shoes to run a little bigger all around than some other brands I've tried.

What is your winter like?

I guess I would prioritise what I wear the most...or maybe what is the most important to me.

For my lifestyle
One pair ankle boots
One pair casual sneakers
One pair flattish sandals
One pair more dressy shoes (loafers/oxfords/pumps...)

Between these I could probably cover most occasions.

I can't give you assistance with brands sorry.

I had knee surgery this spring and have significantly changed my gait with the recovery (in a good way). But many of my old shoes, including almost all my winter boots, are uncomfortable now. I can feel my foot sitting in the wrong position because of how the shoes have broken in. I've come to the sad realization that I will need to replace most of my boots, sneakers and some of my sandals over the next year. I didn't notice until recently because I've been practically living in some Birkenstocks and loafers I bought this summer, but the recent weather change has been eye-opening.

If this were you, what would you replace first? What would you prioritize, since I can't afford to do it all at once? I've got a casual lifestyle and can't wear heels over 1". And any suggestions for brands or shoes that suit wide, high volume feet would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!
