We get falcons, lots of deer, a silver fox, and last week a coyote walked past my backyard. They are all driving my dogs crazy.

nothing goes to waste in nature!amazing creatures.i saw a
documentry once set in nepal were they lay the dead out for the vultures to eat (in a respectful way) because the ground is too cold and hard for burial as well as believing the spirit goes on in nature.

Years ago we were camping in the Rio Grande Valley, on the border between Texas and Mexico. In the morning we woke to the sight of the picnic tables covered with vultures with outspread wings.

Yesterday as I had almost reached home in my car, I intercepted a Cooper's hawk going after a young squirrel. I think the squirrel got away 'cuz the hawk had to swerve to avoid my car. And this is in the city...

I know intellectually that it's how nature works but I never like to see a killing.

Nature's housekeepers? Seriously, I think it's fascinating the role different species play in keeping populations in balance. A few years ago we had an infestation of rabbits in the river area near our home. The last couple of years, the coyotes have moved in, and now we are seeing some of the larger predators like cougars and bears. Those cute bunnies don't seem so cute when we have to grab bear spray for a walk in the park these days.

Cool! I saw a falconry show a few days ago and one of the birds was a vulture. The falconer said that vultures are very smart, and take much less time to train than other raptors (owls ironically take the longest, maybe not so wise). He also said that by cleaning up dead animals quickly they help prevent the spread of disease to other animals or people, and that sometimes when they perch with their wings outstretched it's to let the heat of the sun build up on their dark feathers to disinfect them.

Warning--don't look at the photos if you don't want to see scenes from the natural world.

I live on a corner on a hillside. A few weeks ago I came around the corner and suddenly swerved when I saw what was in the street--four turkey vultures standing in a circle, wings outstretched. I rushed indoors and grabbed my camera, but didn't get all of them with wings spread.

We have a lot of squirrels in our area and occasionally they get hit by cars. (I've only hit one and I hated it. They run out right in front of your car.) At first there were two squirrels, but the vultures were taking care of it. They did move the poor critter to the side of the road, and later when I went out just about every speck was gone.

This has been a big year for bobcats--they come in our back yard--and coyotes. Mountain lions too, although I haven't seen any here.
