Um, I disagree.
I have full but low contrast eyebrows. I look good in both black and pastels.
Recently I've been filling my brows in to make them look stronger, and lately am gravitating to medium level clothes, specifically denim.

What Marina says rings true to me. I think ultimately although hair and eye color play important roles, where I really see the value of color theory is with your skin. Assuming you wrapped your head in fabric of some color with your hair hidden, your best colors will make your skin tone/color look uniform and with the soft glow you get after exercise -- with a slight flush in lips and cheeks w/o lipstick. When I am wearing the wrong color suddenly variations of skin tone and texture becomes really apparent -- skin looks patchy or veiny or sallow, teeth might look yellower, under eye bags might be noticeable, etc. The classic example of this to my eye is the 'soul-sucking beige' range on people who do better with purer and brighter colors.

Then there are several colors in the middle of these two extremes, where I look fine but might look better with lipstick, for example.

I think hair contrast comes into play too, especially at a distance because of book-ending, and you don't want your hair and clothes to 'clash' but my hair has been various colors (red, black, brown with blonde streaks) and my very best colors with my skin haven't changed that much (although they do change a bit with summer freckles/suntans).

ETA: I was reading more about this because it got me thinking and I discovered that folks with my coloring: pale skin, cool dark hair and dark eyes can be to start with: all 3 varieties of winter, deep autumn, bright spring, and/or a summer. So I'm thinking it's only subtle skin tone that makes the difference.

I'm no pro in color theory, so this is only my opinion from what I've read and observed - please don't take this to seriously

Seasonal color analysis divides women in 12 groups based on high/low contrast, warm/cold and bright/shady color qualities. Roughly, we associate those with hair, skin and eyes since those are usually the most evident features - so we take those traits as references to identify what group we are "more alike". Problem is: there are a lot of other color related features and they have different degree of importance for each women. Two women with similar dominant features will have a lot in common, so seasonal color will offer a good generic guideline, but all those other features will also matter to some degree so no two women on a same season are exactly the same.

Another problem with seasonal analysis we see on internet is that we find too many simplified rules and little about the actual theory behind it. That makes us put everything as simple yes or no questions when reality is more like "how much from 1 to 10". Whenever a major traits falls in-between two answers or a little less steriotypical less obvious traits will step forward and gain importance. My eyebrowns don't play an important role because my hair/skin difference overwhelms them. That doesn't mean it won't matter for other women (actually they usually matter a lot).

I don't know if this works for everyone, but I think the brow theory works for me - I'd say I'm around 90% on the scale and I wear mostly those shades in the corresponding top ring. I think I look alright in black, probably better in deep brown. I think my best colors are cobalt and magenta. I feel best when I wear a high contrast outfit. I can't have enough white and ivory tops to wear under my deep colored blazers. I do wear pastels, but don't consider them my best look by themselves. Usually I wear a deep color with the pastel to create a high contrast. I've never had my colors done, but I seem to be a deep winter or deep autumn.

Fun discussion!

I love the visuals, too.

Technically, I'm some kind of a summer, not a spring or winter, Dixie. Likely a cool/ true summer -- despite the blondish hair (which is coloured now anyway -- not that it ever would have been dark.)

When people think of "summer" seasonal palettes they tend to think softened and muted and "light." But cool summer skews relatively intense over all. The colours are "greyed" a bit but they are saturated. I like this comparison chart which shows how similar the summer and winter "bests" actually are. Though in my case, just get rid of both of those dull yellows -- there is not a yellow in the universe that looks good on me. (Unfortunately, because I like the colour). I CAN, however, wear winter white really well, so I can add that back in. ;)

Gigi, I do the same thing. I mix the colors that are out of my confort zone with my confort-zone ones. This can translate in a print, combining various items, or a more see-through fabric.

I experimented with mint last year too! Haha... I'm not used to pastels, there are not my best colors. But I don't feel awkward in this mint blouse because of the mesh. You can see my skin and the black tank top below (two confort-zone colors).

Dixie...late to answer but I am a classic winter. Definitely cool coloring. The only time I struggle to put outfits together is when I veer away from black, white, navy, jewel tones. Browns and beiges have no place in my wardrobe, although I love them on others.

Interesting theory, but I'm not sure I agree. I think brows play a part of it for sure, I have low contrast brows and am a Soft Summer. But I don't think you can ignore other characteristics that might be more important to the overall impression. And I don't think I agree with all pictures chosen - I don't like Kate Winslet in solid black for example. I think she looks much better with something less harsh on her.

Interesting theories Dixie. I have sparse eyebrows which are rather light too, but I darken them with pencil and wear make up too. Even with my eyebrows darkened and wearing make up though I still have medium/low contrast colouring.

Interesting. This reminds me a lot of the book The Triumph of Individual Style, where the authors recommend mimicking the natural contrast of your face in your dressing. A person's eyebrows are certainly one clear indicator of contrast. I have very pale skin and almost-black eyebrows, and I look best in high-contrast outfits.

I am experimenting this year with pastels, which I have a hard time with. They generally make me look washed out. I like the idea of wearing a pastel with black--I'm trying mint and pink for this, as they seem to work pretty well. That lets me keep the high contrast but allows me to wear a pastel every now and then. I do love pastels in spring!

I can also pull off black without too much trouble. I do look better in navy (I am a Deep Autumn), but I don't look like death warmed over in black. Maybe my dark eyebrows are helping me here!

Deb, curious, for your coloring, you don’t strike me as a deep winter, but more like a clear spring. I also think you look neutral, so I imagine you look good in a lot of colors. But I’m not a true fan of the seasons because every author has a different idea.

See, old chic immediately comes off as "such a cliché winter", haha :D.

Suz, Following our gut is the best theory! Your brows are thin but they look defined, and your eyes are an intense blue, really clear and bright. So... my explanation, to keep sustaining my theory, is that you don't have a low contrast because of that, even if you're blond. I skipped some of your outfits and I think you look amazing in black, and I like it more when you have a darker brow. Bold and clear hues look great on you :)

OK, I have always had full, dark brows -- even now that my (real) hair color is almost white. I have pale white skin and maintain a dark hair color via chemistry. High contrast all the way. I am loving red lipstick these days. And black and white and pure jewel tones always bring out the best in my coloring. I am such a cliche winter.

Shevia, you look great in pastels!! I think your brows really help here. Ironically, I think pastels tend to look pretty bland on low contrast people and wash us right out. Or at least that is the effect on me.

Maybe it depends on the overall intensity of the person's colouring rather than contrast per se.

I do think brow colour and intensity is relevant, but it's not the only factor.

My overall colouring is fair, with dark ashy blonde hair, light cool pinky skin, and blue-grey eyes. I'm also fairly low contrast but I do wear black. Objectively, it's too strong for me. Yet in real outfits, it typically works -- probably because, like Marley, the cool vs. warm issue is more relevant in my case. As long as I skew "cool" I will be okay. Maybe not great, but pretty good.

Admittedly, black works best on me if I fill in my (extremely light and sparse) brows with a bit of ashy blonde pencil, or if I wear darker specs. And/or if I wear it with white or a lighter colour, or with bare skin.

Also, despite being quite light in overall colouring, I look awful in most pastels.

In fact, I think my most flattering colours (esp .if I am not wearing any makeup) are mid tones -- blues, berries, lilacs. I also look great in winter white and charcoal.

(BTW, I'd call that pink on Gwyneth a light mid-tone, though I agree it looks better on her than the black does -- no contest.)

Here's a puzzle, though: despite being quite low in contrast, I actually look and feel really good in high contrast outfits, as long as the outfits are very simple and the contrast does not appear in the form of a busy pattern. fact, when we recently did the Fashion Era challenge, most people loved my black and white outfit the best and said it was one of the best outfits they'd ever seen on me. In theory, it makes no sense whatsoever. But IRL, it works. Is it because of body type, personality, or some other combination of factors? I have no idea. I just know that it feels right. OTOH, I would not wear this kind of outfit without a swipe of lipstick and those brows filled in.

Dixie, I look best in dark 100% colors on the wheel. I am a dark winter in the SciArt system. I have always been able to wear black and pure white really well. Here are my colors. The color fan is what I received when I was draped. Picture #4 in my previous post is the day I was draped and the drapes on me.

My brows used to be dark brown, although not especially thick; now they are lighter and quite thin. However, black is and has always been one of my best colors. I'm pretty sure I'm a winter--dark eyes and hair (now greying hair) and light complexion.

Deb, those pictures are precious, thanks for sharing Which are your colors?

The red in the second photo looks beautiful on you. In your third photo, your brows do look darker. Did you dress differently back then? I find your outfit perfect. I love how the dress has gold, the same shade of your hair and the intense colored necklace. Again, I think "mimicking" features is a flattering look.

I look at you and I see medium contrast. Your eyes, hair and skin are similar in color.
Do you find the 70% and 50% rings in the color wheel that I shared the best colors?

I have always had very dark, almost black brows and light, almost white hair (as a child) that is now dark mousy blond. As I aged I did not care for my hair color so much but when I started wearing 'my' colors my hair looked really good. My hair is now slowly turning white, even my eyebrows but I know it will never be completely white. Genetics are against me.

1. as a 2 year old
2. 15 year old
3. 27 year old
4. 59 year old

Not sure this goes with or against your theory.

You may be on to something here as I'm beginning to think I look better in lighter colors. Of course, it is Spring, too. But, your theory is interesting and your photos seem to prove it.

Ms. fine, sparse light brows will see how others check in here. :)

Staysfit, Oh, my god, you're right. I like your glasses trick. Remember when we talked about echoing our haircolor in our shoes or other items? I think this is similar. That could be why people with low contrast look better in black if they draw a darker brow or a darker eye makeup. Like otherwise, black could eat up your features?

Aida, Then maybe the eyebrows could be one easy way to tell if you're light or deep in the color season categories, but it would vary if the person is warm or cool. I think you look awesome in the colors that you use. It's a nice idea to let our faces be the focus. Eyebrows... I like eyebrows, this is the second post I've done about brows I think they express a lot about ourselves. Everybody has a signature brow.

Retailgirl, So with you, this worked? I'm starting to think that all in my family are leaning towards neutral and that's why the differences are more about intensity and contrast. Do you consider yourself neutral, warm or cool?

Mellllls, I think the only true rule is, if you feel good in black, you look good in black.
About the contrast: If you made a picture of you in black and white, would your face have a clear black and white high contrast or would it look like a scale of greys with no drastic difference between your features? Example: Photo 1

Marley, Which are your top three favorite colors?

Hmm, you have been raising some very interesting questions. I was very curious about contrast myself a few months ago. I am low to medium contrast. My eyebrows are thin and I would say fair to medium. Ihave to agree with Marley that contrast tells you nothing about warm or cool. Also, if you change up your glasses frames, if you have any, you can pull off a different contrast level. So I have some darker frames and with them I can wear darker contrast than I would otherwise.

I think that brows have something to do with high, medium, or low contrast colors - but don't have much to do with warm or cool colors. I am medium contrast, but cannot pull off wearing medium shades of any color with a warm undertone. It's more about wearing cool colors for me, than it is about medium contrast (although that plays into it also!)

I like your theory! I'm high contrast...fair skin, black hair before it turned gray. Even though my hair is now salt and pepper, my brows are still black. Lots of colors look good on me, but the best combos for me are black with a white shirt, navy with a white shirt, or charcoal.

Hm interesting theory! I think it probably works for some people regarding contrast only, not sure on the color end. I'll have to think on that.

My sis is medium-high contrast (lighter olive skin, dark brown hair) and looks most fabulous in muted shades, particularly those mixed with brown as she's a pretty classic Autumn coloring, along with saturated muddy shades. I'm very high contrast (pale skin, almost black hair) with strong eyebrows, but I can and enjoy wearing both saturated AND clear pastel shades; on your wheel, primarily I like those in the 100% ring and certain colors closer to the 30% ring, but as long as a color is clear (not mixed with brown/gray) there's a good chance I can wear it. And actually I personally prefer to wear low contrast outfits because that way my hair/face is highlighted most! So I think in my case it's less to do with contrast and more to do with my personal coloring (juuuust on the warm side of the middle between Deep Autumn/Winter).

But hey I'm 100% with you on it being all about the brows, just in another way -- I feel my best with freshly done brows, even more than a fresh hair cut!
