Sounds like you're situated, but if the dress doesn't work, try Talbots. They have quite a few pretty fit and flare midis, but they would need toppers.

I live in a neighbourhood with a lot of religious families who dress as you describe - I often see women wearing a thin crew neck 3/4 sleeve t-shirt (in a dressy fabric, not cotton) under a sleeveless dress - in a coordinating or contrasting colour. The top needs to be fairly tight to work, but it looks very pretty, and turns a less modest dress into a modest one. It is pretty easy to find sleeveless dresses that are long enough so this might be an option. Then you can wear the dress afterwards without the undershirt. Otherwise a shrug would work as well on top,

I see you've already ordered something but here are a couple of more options:

The AT navy ponte one is 30" from the natural waist. I don't know if the H&M ones would be long enough as they don't list lengths. You'd need a topper with all of them though.

First of all, thank you all so much for all the suggestions and help,I am so touched! Like Sterling says, I am impressed with your speed and thoughtfulness

Firecracker and Columbine, that is a great idea I will keep in mind for the future.

WB, thank you for your insight, and understanding. At this shower there will be mothers, aunts. etc. present, so the correct attire is quite important.

Inge, those are gorgeous dresses, I especially like the Westminster one. Sadly the lengths look borderline and most of the long options are sold out int he smallest sizes.

Anabelle, that is a wonderful idea, thank you! I checked Rent the Runway but there wasn't that much that would work unfortunately.

Angie, I have just measured my Kamali Kulture dress ( thank you for suggestion) and the length is 40", meaning that I need a dress with at least 43" of length. That sadly rules out a lot of options.

I have spent hours and hours browsing internet and managed to find this dress: http://guessbymarciano.guess.c.....2W74X6190Z
It is quite similar to the floral one Angie posted but the length is 49" (yay!) and it also says that the material is ponte, which means it is thicker. There is also some rushing and I sized up to S so hopefully all of those factors would contribute to it being less body-con than on the model. So I have just ordered it in S and hopefully it will work and fit ( and it turned out to be the last one in that size as the option disappeared after I placed my order).

I am currently debating if I should order a pretty floral midi-skirt (attached in Finds) I spied at BR as a backup in case the dress does not work. I do have a couple of tops that would work well with the skirt.

.

Tanya, this is so nice of you to attend your friend's very special occasions. The other day (maybe on Robin's wedding guest thread?), someone mentioned Rent the Runway. Have you checked that out yet? Sorry I didn't have time to see what's over there yet, but I wanted to throw that out there. I recently rented a dress and bag for about $70 which includes all the delivery. They have quite a range of occasions to shop for.

#1 Does seems too bodycon for the situation you describe, unless, like me, you are small busted so you feel you can get away with it, and the dress is not too tight across the hips. Based on my own religious upbringing, the older people would be
affronted by how much my butt would stick out in a bodycon dress, but
not ever how it fit across my small chest. I am 5'7" with a long waist and size 0 to 2, so know that ordering a dress like that online could be problematic in terms of where the curve of the hip hits. I would say the same for the two Angie posted as well in terms of how they would fit your body.

#2 I personally would just skip this one for this event even though it is pretty unless the topper completely covered the keyhole, as I think pinning the keyhole would just look wrong.

#3 If white is not a faux pas, this is great! Even if the curve of the hip hits a bit too high, it will drape and you will look that much more modest.

Seriously, I feel for you. I grew up being sent back to my room for my skirt being too short (not completely covering my knee) and having to wear shoulder covering blouses and toppers in the middle of summer for any type of religious activity or things like bridal showers and weddings, but still less strict than you are describing. It is easier to shop that way when you already do rather than when you have to dress that way for a one-time thing. I was just at a bridal shower with a younger group in the same religion I was raised in and there were modest skirt lengths, but bodycon, sleeveless and even strapless dresses and what I consider to be borderline stripper heels aplenty, so perhaps double check with the bride about any other outings that might involve less "modest" attire. The other bridal shower, that involved mothers, was much more like you describe. Best of luck shopping!

Add a temporary flounce or band to your Kamali Kulture dress for the dinner. A strip of fabric in black knit to create a color block band at the bottom would work nicely--If you sew it on with a straight stitch on the sewing machine, the stitching will come out fairly easily when you want to remove it.

Still, I very much appreciate your offer Sarah, you have made my evening.

I have just found a random website similar to UO that may have some options:

1. Too body con? http://www.lulus.com/products/.....25018.html

2. With a topper and pinned neckline: http://www.lulus.com/products/.....09482.html

Ooh, that Anthro dress is gorgeous Kiwigal, thanks! A bit pricey, but it would work. And thank you for the Shabby Apple site, it is new to me and they seem to have some nice things (thought he orange dress would not work - I look horrible in that color).
I have also just realized that the neckline is not much of an issue since it could always be covered up with a scarf.

How tall are you? I have about six different dresses that could work - a few of them would need toppers and a couple of them would need a cami, but I could mail them to you to try on and you could use whatever worked and mail them back after you get home. No rush. You do appear to be taller and thinner than me... So they might not work. It is night time so the lighting is terrible, but I got some photos so you can at least see the basic silhouettes.

1. Black and red
2. Black (deep v in the back as well)
3. Grey
4. Blush
5. Navy with a black belt
6. Long black - very body con on me, but maybe less so on you.

I used to follow a Mormon blogger and she used to buy clothes from Shabby Apple. I quickly looked them up and thought this was pretty.

I also collected the below find, I am not sure if it is still available?

Modcloth? Attached a pretty skirt?

Sara, I just might end up with a skirt as it is probably easier to find than a dress.

Elizabeth, unfortunately my Tadashi dress is too short, it barely reaches the knee :(

Greyscale, I definitely want to be able to wear whatever I buy later. A silk shirt dress is not a bad idea - not the most expected, but definitely something I will keep in mind.

It's sweet of you to want to be there for your friend, but that does seem like a hassle! I'm sure I'd struggle to meet the requirements too, especially for summer weather.

If you do buy something new, I vote for something simple and classic so you'll be sure to find more chances to wear it.

For the shower, would a shirtdress be too casual? There's this gorgeous steel-grey silk one at BR:
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=403527002
The silk brings it up a notch in formality, in my eye, but it's probably not what others will be wearing. But it's what I would wear, and it's on sale!

Tanya, is there any chance your tadashi dress would work? Perhaps toned down a bit with a plain or casual cardi or other topper? The neckline on it is modest, the length good, you'd just have to cover your arms.

Tough situation! I would suggest the skirt, top, and jacket/cardigan route just because you've looked for an appropriate dress and haven't found anything. It might be easier to put together an outfit with separates. On the other hand, maybe you can find a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress that you can add a topper to?

Thank you Kiwigal and Suz, especially for understanding and sympathy!

Unfortunately, I do not have anyone I could borrow anything from - most of my friends have uber-casual wardrobes of jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. I am perfectly fine getting a throw-away cropped cardigan from a place like F21 to save the day. The festivities are at bride's parents house, which I am guessing will be air-conditioned, but the weather outside will be fairly warm.
In theory, a full midi skirt with a top could work, though I am pretty sure everyone will be in dresses, so I would a prefer a dress too. I do not own that Halogen skirt or anything similar, so I would have to buy a skirt if I am going that route. So I am thinking if I have to buy something anyway it may as well be the most appropriate thing - a dress. Now shoes/bags I have plenty of, enough options to go with whatever dress/skirt I end up with.

Oh dear. I am hoping that some of our US friends will offer some suggestions about dresses. I do think the option of sleeveless with a topper is reasonable -- except where are the festivities to be held? Will they take place in a hot or temperate climate?

Do you have one of those Halogen striped full skirts like Angie's? Something like that with a blouse might work well, no?
