I just had my mammogram too- one side was great and one very painful.

Excellent information — thank you, everyone, for sharing! It is much appreciated. I would like to go for a consult, at the very least.

Honestly, I’m surprised I don’t have more discomfort than I do — I see so many women who have smaller bust sizes than I do complaining about the weight! Maybe I’ve just had it so long I don’t notice it, LOL. The dents in my shoulders do tell the story.

And I have my annual mammogram tomorrow. Let’s keep up with those, ladies! Having lost a dear friend to breast cancer six years ago, it’s very near and dear to my heart to take these preventative measures.

1. Regarding top surgery. I assume you are asking about gender affirming top surgery, which has very different goals than a mastectomy or a reduction. Top surgery is done to create an aesthetically pleasing masculine appearing chest. Reduction removes some tissue to reduce breast size. Mastectomy removes all breast tissue for cancer treatment/prevention.

2. There are obviously pros and cons to elective surgery. For example, anesthesia risks increase if you are over 65, and/or if you have multiple or prolonged exposure >3 hours. Among other things, the risks of prolonged anesthesia include deficits in executive function and ADHD symptoms.

3. A dear friend decided to have a breast reduction at age 66 after years of back pain and difficulty exercising. She was also frustrated about finding comfortable bras and clothing that fit. In the end she was very happy with the result, however, three years on she is still figuring out how to dress her new figure.

4. My friend's recovery was complicated by formation of uncomfortable keloid scar tissue and unexpected abnormal pathology results showing cancerous or maybe pre-cancerous tissue. I don’t recall the exact diagnosis. I do know she had to see an oncologist and another surgeon, and she had additional evaluations and biopsies. They concluded she was still at increased risk so they recommended something akin to tamoxifen. She decided to forgo the medication after weighing pros and cons. Her keloids were treated using Red LED Light therapy and they improved.

I read an article last week on BBC news that reported breast reduction surgery was the #1 ‘cosmetic’ procedure performed in the UK.

I only have second hand experience. Both young women in their mid to late 20’s. Both ++ happy, and in the ‘best thing I ever did for myself’ camp.

*I had my every-two-years mammogram today*.

I also know someone who had top surgery -- in that case the person had smaller breasts and recovery was excellent and very fast -- they managed the drainage tubes well and are happy with the result.

OTOH I also have a friend who had augmentation and she has serious regrets about that.

I know someone who had top surgery which is admittedly more extreme. They had large breasts to begin with and had difficulty in finding clothes to fit. They had drainage issues but said it stemmed from having a third nipple(!) and I am sure they don’t regret the procedure. Every other person I know who has had the surgery has no regrets. I think regrets arise in those who have had augmentation vs reduction.

I have not had a breast reduction but a good friend had one and was delighted. Recovery went smoothly for her and she is so glad she did it.

I have only been under general anaesthetic twice -- once about 30 years ago for a gynecological issue, and once recently for my clavicle surgery. With respect to the anaesthetic -- it was so much better for the recent surgery. First time, I was nauseous on waking and felt quite woozy for a while afterwards. For this most recent surgery, I woke up feeling absolutely fine and recovered from it very quickly. Speaking for myself, I would not let that fear get in my way of a surgery that might significantly improve my life. I think they are much better at calibrating things than in the past.

I haven't had a breast reduction but I have had a tummy tuck, and my advice about any cosmetic surgery is to take whatever recovery time the surgeon estimates and double it! Honestly the anesthesia is the least of it -- it's super safe these days. Recovery from these surgeries is pretty grueling but the results are so worth it!

My other tip is that many of these surgeries are performed at outpatient surgery centers. Do not go home the same day: If you're not admitted to the hospital, find a surgical aftercare facility and spend a night or two there. It's like a cross between a hospital and a hotel. They have nurses to keep an eye on you, deal with bandages and drains, give meds, etc. I went to one and it was the best money I spent. I went to this one:

Honestly, I was a bit nervous but not enough to stop me from having the surgery. I was also a "normal" size when I was younger but with having babies and aging they had gotten larger.

Oddly, I still have a problem finding bras I like, but I have a much larger selection now and don't have to go with the super expensive ones. And I can now wear bras that are sized in S-M-L!

Every time this comes up , I have the same response - I only wish . I’m apprehensive of being under anesthetic for any time at all and have had terrifying reactions / experiences from it . The recovery time also is a factor as is possible cost . If it were less invasive I’d do it in a heartbeat . I hate hate hate having all this extra fat and tissue and don’t feel it matches the rest of my body . I just feel clothing looks and hangs so much better without breasts in the way , lol.

I asked about this a year or two ago and got the positive and encouraging answers that you are getting. So far I've just been too scared...of the surgery, the recovery and the limitations. Silly to be scared when I haven't even checked it out! And the wistful thinking always grows when hot weather hits. These girls are heavy and the bras they require (36 DD) feel so hot.

Thanks for asking about this!

I have a friend a couple years older than I am who had one two years ago and she is thrilled. She doesn’t need a bra anymore and feels so much better.

I have always had a significant bust, even from my teenage years, and even at my lowest weight. I’m currently a 32G and I know women who wear a smaller cup size than I do who have had reductions. I think the only thing that’s saved me for this long is that I never had children, so the boobs have stayed *relatively* level if not perky until very recently. But I have had dents in my shoulders for years, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to have bras fit well, feel comfortable, and do their job of lifting and supporting. At the age of 60, I’m kinda feeling I’ve had enough and would like one less obstacle to my comfort. I don’t want to lose a lot — I’m hourglassy in build and want my upper half to balance out my wide hips — but it would be nice to go down to maybe a D instead of G. I have a narrow back and I just feel a bit thick with this much volume on the front of my chest. A slight reduction and lift would appeal to me.

I do wonder how long I would have to wait to resume exercise (3x a week Pilates and walking 4-5 miles a day). I’m a little scared of surgery — the only other procedure I’ve ever had was my laparoscopic hysterectomy 13 years ago!

My very close friend had one about two years ago and has been delighted. Mainly it was related to her sore back, with the weight of the breasts. It is limiting with some things initially but she thinks it was most definitely worthwhile!!

I had one about 4 years ago. Mine was considered a lift rather than reduction (34DDD to 34C-D depending on the bra) but they did remove some weight so not sure why. I got it on a Friday and was back to work on Monday. I was uncomfortable for a few days and had to sleep propped up but recovery wasn't too bad for me. I also did not have to have drain tubes which can make recovery more difficult. I had a very sore throat for a few days because of the breathing tube, like hard to swallow. But that went away.

It was totally worth it. I didn't have much of the pain others experience due to large breasts but I was often uncomfortable and sweaty, besides feeling very self conscious. So much better now.
