Kari, that dress is twelve kinds of awesome on you. The outfit sounds lovely and comfy. A few years ago I was traveling through Heathrow and saw a woman in a waist surrendering soft blue cashmere dress, leggings and pale pink flats. So chic and practical for the long international flight she was about to board! I've never figured out how to replicate something along those lines for me, and you've given me more ideas. Thank you! Of course it helps that I just bought my first pair of leggings ......

Yay, Kari!!

I agree absolutely that a dress can be great travel wear. Actually, I prefer dresses for travelling and wore one on my last plane flight, too. And I agree completely with your rationale for wearing the jacket, also.

Hope you have safe travels and see you soon!

This sounds like a super practical outfit to me! All your pieces are super cute also, and there is mostly knit , no pinching, no heels! I too travel by bus and train ( rarer by air ) a lot, and favor knit dresses who don't pinch , don't constrict and offer good coverage with leggings. But I prefer the structure and warmth of boots over pants. Even though they usually set off the detectors . It take me 2 seconds to get them. And I am the person who checks in super early.
Also , i see you took my advice and didn't leave that GORGEOUS dress unsupervised. Wise:)
Good for you for challenging the norm. I feel that in Europe airports are more like "normal clothes zone" . I see lots of jeans and tops and sneakers. Nothing too fancy nothing to frumpy . Of course there is the occasional girl in a suit and pumps , or girl with boots ( me and quite a lot of my peers - boots are to heavy for luggage) .

Interestingly I discovered that Canadian airports (well, this one anyway) do not ask you to take off your shoes while going through the metal detector, unless your shoes set them off. News to me! And so far, the CATSA personnel are much friendlier than most of the TSA staff I've encountered.

Mo, I like the way you think! I almost was going to wear my tall boots but they are actually not that easy to take on and off for me compared to my ballet flats, and I thought it would be too much hassle.

Yep, I always travel in a dress and tights or leggings with tall zip up boots. Easy on/off for the shoe bomb checkers (lol) and a dress does not bind when sitting for hours on end like pants can. Enjoy your trip!

Sona, I'd say yes - but the only regular leggings I have are cropped below the knee, and the thing that's more comfortable about these is that they come up higher in the waist (my leggings don't come up *quite* to my insanely high natural waist so I have to layer Spanx shorts over them to prevent them from rolling down my hips.)

These are lighter weight than my regular leggings - they are about the weight of medium-thickness tights. They're quite comfortable and they are totally staying in place from head to toe. Yay!

sounds like a great travel outfit. I must say that there was a time when my 20 yr old self thought that a velour tarcksuit was 'it' for travel. Gosh, I was so young, naive and uneducated in fashion/style at that time.

Kari- do the stirrup leggings feel more comfy than regular leggings?

Syvie, that is awesome!

I think my family would probably tease me big-time if they saw me dressing like this to go to the airport - this would be seen as a "fancy" and impractical outfit - but oh my gosh, I'm so comfortable. I think this long-sleeved poly blend dress + stirrup leggings combination is every bit as comfortable as the knit tracksuits that I used to see so many people wearing to the airport.

While I don't have pictures today just at this moment, I WILL have plenty of pics during the trip. My camera is armed and ready!

No pictures of the full outfit because I'm currently in transit, but here's what I decided to travel in (I'm heading to Toronto by way of bus & air.) And I'm not kidding when I say that I picked this outfit primarily for COMFORT reasons:
Nine West faux-wrap scribble print poly blend dress that Angie blogged about a few weeks back
Gray patterned Oroblu stirrup leggings (about the weight of thick tights)
Magenta patent Me Too Legend ballet flats (Utterly comfortable flats that stretch if my feet are swollen, which I'm anticipating on a long-ish flight.)
white NY&Co. blazer, courtesy of Yellowgirl
Black and white patterned Tarnish wool scarf
Mossy green Gallery trench coat
Bronze & green titanium specs
Chunky white watch
Mustard handbag
A black wool beret stuffed into my carry-on just in case I get really chilly
A black unstructured tote bag to carry magazines and an empty water bottle that I'll fill at the airport.

This is without a doubt both the dressiest AND the most comfortable outfit I've ever traveled in. I find this dress very forgiving and comfortable, and less fidgety than a two piece outfit (skirt & knit top) would be. And it's much much more comfortable than pants, which bind at the waist and start to slither down my hips if I'm going between sitting & standing frequently.
The blazer is woven, but it's not stiff and I can roll the sleeves up or down depending on whether I'm chilly. Normally I'd probably have worn a knit boyfriend cardi instead of a blazer, but I didn't want the blazer to get crushed and crumpled in my checked luggage and wanted to wear it with some of the planned outfits I'm bringing. The scarf is long & wide enough that it's actually more of a thin pashmina - it's not too bulky but is also great for adding extra warmth/coverage on an overly air conditioned plane.

Take that, environmental norms! Style and comfort CAN totally go hand in hand, even while traveling.
