I have this problem too Peri - thanks for bringing it up. In my case it is, I think, cause by a combination of having fairly thin hair, and by wearing it up a lot.

I have also been using Argan Oil but I am going to try out some of the suggestions from here.

Oh, and mine often look fine when I am inside and have just washed and air dryed it, but when I go outside and the wind blows it around, then those little bits stick out the side. When I got my hair blowdried at a salon, this hardly happened, but I haven't managed to replicate this by myself!

I have pretty dry hair and always have. I think low iron and low minerals overall like zinc, selenium and magnesium can all impact the hair. Mine has improved a lot over the years by taking supplements and eating things like avocados in abundance. Hormones can be an issue as well (esp. thyroid) so a thyroid check might be a good idea.

I've recently been using Argan oil as an addition to my usual routine of no sulphate shampoo/conditioner and I really like it.

I found a solution for dry brittle hair. But I'm not a hairdresser, so you'll have to experiment and see if this works for you or discuss with a professional( I have to make that disclaimer)

First, realize, I have gray hair which gets very dry and wiry. On top of that it has a tight curl. So the natural sebum from my scalp cannot work its way down the hair shaft. In other words, my hair is probably the driest on earth.

Here's the tips I've found that works:

1) Don't use shampoos with sulfates. Sulfate free washes are best. Trader joes has products that are sulfate free. Or you can google sulfate free products. The only time sulfates work is if you have product buildup over a period of time. Sulfates are the grease cutting solvents that removes grease from dishes. So you don't want to strip your hair all the time. Play it safe and use sulfate free.

2) Buy a leave in conditioner and make it part of your regime before using any styling product. I use a leave in( don't' rinse it out) at the end of my washing routine and before styling.

3) If your hair is still dry, use a tiny bit( less than a dime size) of an oil like olive, jojoba or grape seed oil. If oil weighs your hair down then you may need to, in lieu of adding oil before styling, do a deep oil treatment before you shampoo. This is called a pre-poo conditioner.

How to prepoo:
Dampen your hair and put about a quarter amount of oil all over it and then cover with a plastic cap and let it set for about a half to a hour or more under a dryer or, if no dryer, then put a stocking cap over the bag and let your own body heat dissolve the oil.

After prepoo:
Shampoo and use a leave in conditioner. Make sure you've raked the leave in conditioner until it isn't visible. (follow instructions on the label)

That's it. Then style your hair as you usually do. Your hair should be moisturized and soft(like silk or butter)

I have thin fine hair, and it's been so even when I was young. I have had hair loss at various times, and the incidents have been concurrent with the following health conditions (in order of severity).

Miscarriage
Hormone changes (peri-menopause)
Hypothyroidism
Stress

I've never noticed hair thinning or breakage from hair care products or routines. But then again I only use a blow dryer, hair brush and hair spray. It's almost always related to stress/hormones/endocrine system issues.

In each incident the period of hair loss lasted around a month. My hair grew back in each case except peri-menopause. This has brought on a new, thinner level of hair for the past 3 years. I think it's permanent, and a normal part of the aging process for me at least. But, I am not bald and it stopped after one month.

I do think it makes sense to rule out medical issues by seeing a doctor. I really feel for you and wish there was a better solution. I will say that the thinning nature of my hair past age 50 has made me think twice about styling, coloring, perms etc. I currently have a super low maintenance hair approach and prefer clips to hair bands as they don't pull out as much of my hair.

You have a lot of great suggestions from the other ladies which they have explained a lot better than I could. I noticed you said you got a new iron, I would lay off the iron for a while because getting used to a new tool sometimes means sacrificing hair. That's what happened to me when I first started using my flat iron. It was a huge change from my trusty curling iron.

Friend had this occur- it may have been partially related to hair processing. She backed of all products with sulfates and parabans, often washing her hair with mild conditioner and no shampoo. She air dried her hair, combed it as little as possible, used cut nylon knee highs as elastics instead of other, more damaging ones and became content with her hair's tendencies rather than trying to cajole it. Agree that diet is part of this, and that curling irons can be damaging. If you must use heat for styling, perhaps a product that protects the hair would be worthwhile. I would avoid heat whenever possible.

Good luck with this. Changing routines can help.

ETA: Thyroid changes can also impact hair, though I lack any expertise in the subject.

Sorry to hear. Strengthening the hair is done primarily through diet, not product, despite what the products claim. Have you changed your diet? More protein and more healthy fats (saturated, fish oil, etc.) will help in the long term. I noticed a ton of breakage recently, and it's all in the area where I tend to tie my hair loosely back.

No big freeze until this week, and I haven't been very stressed. I did get a new curling iron and I wonder if maybe the clamp is too tight. I'm using low heat but maybe I need to stop using it for awhile. And maybe see my dr...time for a check anyway.

I had problems similar to this twice. Once it turned out my iron was low and I had to take iron supplements for awhile. The second time I had been under severe stress. The problem resolved after a few months. I have not tried shampoos, etc. so I can not comment on those.

Are you living in a "big freeze" area, Peri? I know severe cold can sometimes cause hair to break. Otherwise it might be the after-effects of an illness, stress , medication or maybe over-use of straighteners or driers. I've no experience of strengthening shampoos, but they're certainly worth a try. I'd have a word with your hair-stylist as a starting point.

I'm seeing an alarming amount of broken hair lately. I don't know what I've done...I didn't notice at first so I don't know when it started, but I've got this halo of broken ends sticking up, and a lot more around my hairline. I already have thin hair so this is really not good. I mean thin as in not a lot of hair...but lately I'm also noticing each hair itself looking more fine. Scary.

Has anyone had any success with one of those "strengthening" shampoos and conditioners? Recommendations for treatment? Ideas on causes?

Thanks for any suggestions.
