Slightly off topic, and not written by me, and not really even for the forum who are respectful and understanding. Please keep in mind that masks are not mandated here except for in medical settings or some close contact settings.

I saw this on Facebook and wanted to share it:

As governments are trying to figure out how to ease back into a new normal, please remember:

Some people don’t agree with the suggested reopening.... that’s okay. Be kind.

Some people are still planning to stay at home.... that’s okay. Be kind.

Some are still scared of getting the virus and a second wave happening....that’s okay. Be kind.

Some are sighing with relief to go back to work knowing they may possibly save their business or their homes....that’s okay. Be kind.

‍⚕️Some are thankful they can finally have a surgery they have put off....that’s okay. Be kind.

Some will be able to attend interviews after weeks without a job....that’s okay. Be kind.

Some will wear masks for weeks....that’s okay. Be kind

Some people will rush out to get the hair or nails done.... that’s okay. Be kind.

❤️ The point is, everyone has different viewpoints/feelings and that’s okay. Be kind.

We each have a different story. If you need to stay home, stay home. But be kind. If you need to go out, just respect others when in public and be kind !

Don’t judge fellow humans because you’re not in their story. We all are in different financial - and mental states than we were months ago. So remember, be kind

Taylor, I know this topic is close to your heart! In a way, you can relax because you're a retired stylist. You don't need to stress about working as a hair stylist who services clients these days! Although, I bet you stress for DD. It's hard :(

Laura, I hear you - and no, you can't social distance when you have your hair done! Personally, and FWIW, I think it depends on the context, situation and setting with your hair stylist, and it sounds like Nuancedream and I have the same impression. My stylist works in her own salon with no-one else. She is the only stylist. She shampoos, colours and cuts herself. She will be wearing PPE - mask, face shield, gloves, and scrubs! She is also soooo hygienic, level-headed, sensible and thoughtful. I trust her implicitly. We will be wearing masks with filters too. There are a lot of things I feel unsafe doing at the moment, but I actually feel safe about having my hair done with my wonderful stylist.

I'm enjoying reading about everyone's experiences. In my area, hair salons can't open until our final stage of a three-stage process, and we're in the most restrictive phase through June 5. So, it will be a while. At this point, I'm playing a mental game with how long I can go. When we move to the "final" stage- which will still have all general guidance from the CDC in place- I'll contact my stylist, and then be prepared to wait for an appointment. I am a bit worried about her, since she's a smoker, so I do hope she'll only come back when she wants to.

I have my first waxing appointment (a bigger priority for me than my hair) on May 29. We will have to call from the parking lot, and they will call us back when we are allowed to enter. They will have a separate room set up for each guest, so no guests will see one another, and their waiting area inside will be closed. The salon worker and customer will each be wearing masks, and I know they sanitize between customers regardless of this illness. I am comfortable keeping the appointment as things now stand.

The hair salon I go to is a larger, open salon, so I will have to call to find out what their new policies will be.

I’ll be honest, I am not sure what to do. I was supposed to go to the dentist last week, 1st week my county allowed them to start seeing patients again, and I canceled. I’m just not comfortable enough that they know enough about this to keep me safe.
I feel a little better about getting my haircut because it’s less invasive. But my hairdresser is high risk, and has many older clients, I live in fear that I might infect them. And I don’t trust the shampoo girl, I don’t think she understands nor cares about social distancing. So I’m on the fence about this one.
Regarding my nail salon, that just an outright no for me. I feel sorry for them, I’ve been a steady client for a long time, but I just don’t see how they will make the social distancing work. It’s a salon that makes its money on volume, it’s a small shop with tables close together. I’m just not willing to risk my health for my vanity. Sorry probably said more than I should have. I’m done now.

Laura, I'm in the same siuation with you as my haircut is also scheduled for 6/3. I have been trying to decide whether to keep or cancel my appointment. Additionally, in Seattle where I live, it is not entirely clear if our governor will give King County, where Seattle is located, the green light to move to Phase 2 on 6/1 whereby salons would be allowed to resume services. You're so right in the assessment that none of the COVID-related decisions are easy. I guess I'll just stay open and flexible to whatever comes my way.

Cindy, your hair is so gorgeous- I can’t believe you haven’t had it cut in almost a year.
I haven’t been since January, and my cut could use some shape, but it’s grown out well, no big deal. I have an appointment in June.
But, I did get my eyebrows done last week. That made me feel like a million bucks to have that done. We wore masks, I waited in my car until my aesthetician was ready to enter the salon, brought nothing in with me, paid hands-free, sanitized, etc. I tipped my aesthetician the cost of all my missed appointments. We hugged by wrapping our arms around ourselves - I squeezed her stuffing out, hee.
I did have concerns but in the end, I feel like this was a low-risk interaction for both of us. I’ve felt less safe at the post office and the grocery store for sure.

I appreciate this discussion, because I'm scheduled for a haircut on June 3 and I'm going back and forth in my mind, trying to decide whether or not to keep it. My stylist is a friend and has been essentially quarantined until now, as have I. I trust her implicitly. The problem is her other clients and her exposure to them. I worry about her, and I also realize that by exposing myself to her, I'm also exposing myself to all of her other clients. This NPR article rates getting a haircut as a medium to high risk activity, because it involves close contact and breathing, which is how the virus is transmitted. Cloth masks help but are not 100% effective. In a nutshell -- there's no way to be distanced from your stylist.

Still, I really want to keep my appointment! Maybe I'm overthinking it. Sigh. None of these COVID-related decisions is easy!

I feel very sad for stylists and others working in personal services that have had this massive disruption to their livelihood. Not the only people I know but it is massive.

I am pleased most of you have had good experiences - getting your hair done is a small or big pleasure and I have prioritised spending in this area over clothes, shoes or makeup. I would forego it - and have for three and a half months - if I needed to - and would go darker and stay longer. But I would be sad about it.

Also sad to read about the Missouri stylist - who probably needed the money and kept working. Very tough all round.

I have a desperate need to go see my Jade. She hasn't had a pair of scissors near my hair in one full year, because the last cut she gave me was so good that my hair still looks great when I take time to style it. Now, because of the coronapocalypse, I haven't had much inclination to style it because there's been nowhere to go but work and work requires a hair net so I've been like "meh". I actually used my flat iron the other day, and girls at work were saying how good my hair looked and they were so excited for their appointments next week and etcetera but I haven't had my hair done because Jade's cut was that good. However, it's getting hot and my hair is ridiculous thick, so it's time to thin this mop out a LOT, but I'm still hesitant to go out and about like that. We are very rural here, and I'm afraid we haven't seen our peak yet, and now everyone is reopening. I need her to do my color, which is actually just Jade toning the brassiness out of my grey hair.

Hope you get to keep your appointment! I know how good, how NORMAL, such a thing feels

I think the rules in Ontario will be about what Suz outlined, which is hard because a lot of the salon experience is getting pampered with the hair washing and scalp massage, etc., and leaving with a fresh blow-out. I think it will continue to hit them hard I can't wait until mine opens again!

I think that Covid 19 might bring some changes to how we use hair salons. There was the time when women went to salons to get their hair set twice a week. It’s gone and hard even to imagine now. Who has the time? Home hair styling appliances were developed and styles become more relaxed. Now when a lot of people will continue work from home, getting to a salon would require a separate trip, not just dropping by after work. Exposing yourself to risk is another consideration.
Maybe we will go less often and more natural look will become a norm?
more DIY products will be available and with better quality? Hard to predict but it will be different.

Uh... haha... I kinda ticked off my old boss who returned as a consultant by trashing his suggestion to run all the fans in the bakery. We have a really cavernous space, which is safer, like the outdoors is safer... but it’s safer not because of ‘air flow‘ but because of diffusion room. When you actually have currents... well, I’ve seen the infection charts in a room according to HVAC layout.

The salon where I go is very busy... they started doing all-stations-on simultaneously for financial reasons. You’re six feet apart, and the ceilings are high, but the space is narrow and you’ve got all the blow dryers going. I’m a little afraid for them, because reopening conditions may not be enough to keep them afloat.

In any case, the blow drying is a thing. It will be interesting to have to wait to get home to see how a cut & colour has turned out... lol. Maybe that can’t be a same-day thing for me anymore and it’ll be one day cut, second day colour.

Road trip! I went across the nearest state line to a state where nearly everything is open. It is a one-stylist salon but she was happy to see me. Distancing was handled well. I am no longer disheveled.

DH had a hair cut yesterday. He was the only customer in the place and had to wear a mask during the hair cut, holding it to his face by hand when they trimmed the around the ear area. They also took his temperature and went through symptom questioning. I have yet to try an appointment.

I wrote about my experience a few weeks ago and, in line with Taylor wrote, it was one of the least risky things I have seen. I don't know if she has relaxed her precautions since then but it is quite possible to get your hair cut in a very sanitary fashion.

Angie, my stylist works in an open area with another stylist. I'm sure there will be some type of partition/barrier to ensure a 6 foot distance between stations and only one client at a time in the shampoo bowl area. As noted in the article, some salons will not be blow-drying in order to avoid airflow of germs.

I’m happy you are both able to venture back into a salon soon. Please enjoy your visit to your stylist and feel SAFE ,because it is. Most stylist have private rooms , or stations separated by a safe distance.

In my opinion the whole shutdown of stylists is seriously overkill. I notice all the officials have their hair done! The attack on these stylist across this country is absolutely terrifying to me.

Stylists must adhere to the strictest of sanitation and decontamination laws of almost any licensed professional. Not only the individual stylist regarding getting and keeping their license, but , the Salon Itself must also follow very Strict sanitation laws.

Stylists are required to sanitize their combs, brushes ,etc daily, Drapes and towels as well as all equipment is sanitized . Alcohol is also used liberally .State Board of Cosmology are in Salons often and will fine stylist who do not adhere to these laws.

About the only thing Stylists weren’t required to do is wear a mask....that will likely be a requirement now.

Both Stylists and clients are eager to get back to business.

I hope we keep our apps this time too, Andrea! Mine is right at the end of the month. 4 MONTHS LATER. Like you, it's usually a 6 week thing...

My stylist works in her own big room. It's just her and the client, which helps. No one else. I don't quite know her strategy on blow drying. I guess I will find out

I enjoy getting haircuts every six weeks and my biannual hair coloring sessions. It's comforting for me. Hopefully, the third time is the charm on 6/3. 17 weeks between haircuts is a bit too long for me.
