Laura, check out Ann Taylor Loft's Julie cut trousers. They've got more room through the hip and thigh area, and actually fit at the waist. I think they go up to 14 or 16 (can't remember now). I don't know how long they are--I'm 5'3", and they dragged on the floor with 3" heels on me.

Thanks for the recs, too, all - Donna, Talbots is hit or miss with me; I haven't checked in the last couple of months because the closest store to me closed and now it's a bit of a hike to the next one.
Marit, I would love to shop at Maurices! I bought so many pairs of jeans from there when I was in my 20s, but there are no Maurices anywhere near me, although when I'm visiting my parents I sometimes can stop by. They're owned by the same folks as Dress Barn now and Dress Barn has a lot of the same work-appropriate affordable options, but the pants fit is nowhere near the same (last time I checked, anyway!)
Suz, I manage to be on the cusp of regular and tall, too - not quite as tall as Sveta I don't think but when I have had to go down a size for fit, suddenly things are too short. Argh. I agree that it's a moving target - something we just have to get accustomed to, and try on new brands and fits periodically, I guess.

Congrats on your weight loss -- and on your shopping persistence. When I lost weight I definitely changed brands. Or -- to be more accurate -- I actually found some brands. I had no idea what fit me in the past. But for sure, my body shape changed as well as my size, and I now fit into brands that might have been tricky in the past. It is a constant process of trying on and seeing.

If you are shopping for dresses, a lot will be too short. Same with pants/ jeans. Sveta shops sometimes at Long Tall Sally, I believe.

Yes! I have recently gone (again) from being on the misses/plus cusp to solidly misses/juniors (but I have to accommodate an apple waist so juniors is often touch-and-go). I'm definitely able to buy brands I wasn't fitting into at a larger size, and styles that are slightly more hourglass. I agree with you that "mature" brands (CC, Chico's) are more forgiving to apple/rectangle shapes.

I can't help with hourglass pants, sorry! but if you liked CC and Chico's at a larger size, I can suggest Maurices for you. Also I would suggest Sweet Pea tops/dresses; to try Zara (often cut pretty hourglass but size 12 can be tricky because the fit varies A LOT from item to item in my experience); and I can't praise Erin MacLeod's snap-around skirts highly enough (she sells on Etsy).

I always try to review a brand's size charts -- which may or may not be reliable, but I HAVE noticed that some list much bigger waist sizes. Have you tried Talbot's? I think Thistle found jeans that fit her there.

I don't have any advice to share, but kudos on your weight loss. I also struggle with fitting pants because of the waist/hip ratio, so I certainly sympathize.

I just bought a size 12 dress - not knit - from the Ann Taylor Factory Store. *boggle* But! That's not what I wanted to share with y'all. I have noticed that as my body has changed with my weight loss I've been buying from different stores. Of course, being on the plus/misses border before, now a lot of plus sizes no longer work for me. But in brands where I was still in misses, some of them no longer suit: I used to get a lot (either firsthand or via the thrift store) of Coldwater Creek and Chico's, and now their stuff doesn't fit me well. I think it's because they're aiming toward an apple/rectangle shape and now my waist/hip ratio is too big. I'm a little reluctant to lose much more weight because it honestly will make it hard to buy pants and skirts that will fit without having to alter the waist (I remember this unfondly from my 20s).

So far I haven't found a whole lot of brands that suddenly fit me again - I'm not that skinny, juniors is out of the question - although BR and AT are more likely to fit well now. And some brands at Kohl's. Maybe I've just gotten in a rut and am not looking the right places. I will say that a lot of the misses stuff at Nordstrom still doesn't suit me that well; it's all too short.

If you have lost or gained weight recently, have you changed what brands or styles you buy?
