Yes! I do tend to prefer a higher collar, altho in the heat of the bakery I wear scoop necks. Never considered darts! I’ve also learned to stay away from spaghetti strap dresses... or any straps less than two inches in width.

Suz...it seems to be all about how slippery the fabric is, no other detail has been a good predictor of this and least not for me.

Danskogirl - I did see those sorts of things online and tried to make my own version for my bone hobo. The Brahman bag fabric/leather is very "bumpy" with it's alligator-like embossing so not sure something like this would stick properly but it's good to know about.

Jaileen I often use cross bodies for all the reasons you suggest, but I sometimes want a shoulder bag instead. And I wanted to try Brahmin.

Joy - I suppose I could contact Brahmin, but since I only liked the bag and did not love it I didn't really want to put any more energy into it.

Angie - if I could find a satchel with handles that fold down on a hinge so they are out of the way AND a not-too-thin longer strap I would definitely consider it! So far the ones I find like that have longer straps that are too thin or attachment points that are too flimsy, or the bags are too "structured" and quite heavy (like some Michael Kors ones). I do like the look of a satchel and do keep looking at them.

calmwave....I can see how a chain strap would be even more problematic than a leather one if it slipped.

Rachylou, hmm, I never had any idea about "sloping shoulders" until Angie observed that mind sloped a bit. Body types are so different in SO many ways aren't they. Sloping shoulders also seem to impact how necklines fit, do you find that too? I find that a lot of basic scoop neck or crew neck tops end up gaping just a little in front and I sometimes put in tiny darts to fix it.

Firecracker that is fascinating and after all the bags I've looked at in say the past year, I totally agree on the "sweet spot" of shoulder bag strap width and strap length. I have another bag I'm considering that happens to be a cross body and if I keep that one I'll have to punch a few additional holes in the strap so I can wear it at a height that looks right to me. It's definitely a very personal decision, and like so many other wardrobe items, it's all about the FIT.

I took a handbag-making class, and the instructor said she had experimented a lot to find her "sweet spot" for strap width on a shoulder bag. I think it was 2 to 2.5 inches for her. Also, she found she liked the strap to be a good length to just tuck the bag under her arm, not have it hang too low. What struck me was that these things do make a difference, and they can vary from one person to another. I think you are right that the smoothness of the leather, and also the stiffness, will play a role, too. It seems these are elements to take note of in the bags that do work for you, even down to measuring.

This is one of the reasons I use a crossbody bag. The other reason is being hands free. The bag has to work, obviously, then the strap has to be long enough and wide enough. A 24 inch drop is long enough for me. I bought this Sak bag earlier this year and have used it nearly non stop. It is big enough that I can casually toss stuff in, has a zip closure, outside pockets, and of course a very long strap. It is also not precious. I used it to take a sweaty water bottle to an outdoor concert and didn’t worry about it. And since I got it at Macy’s, I bought it at one of its many sales.

Thanks Suz. Interestingly enough the two bags that have had this issue showed the issue immediately when I tried them on empty.

It's frustrating for sure. Having said I don't have the problem, I remembered that I do have some double handled totes in which ONE strap is forever slipping off. Drives me nuts when it happens. Sometimes it's because the bag is too full but I don't think that is your issue.

I imagine you'd have to try it on with stuff in it, and also with the items you plan to wear. Another issue is slippery tops/coats.

I understand why it's frustrating because like you, I do not like to carry a daily bag on my arm or in hand, so it is shoulder bags or crossbody bags or knapsacks except for special occasions (when I will carry a clutch).

karen13, good idea, that's sort of what I did with the earlier bone hobo, but with a longer strip of a drapery header fabric. It worked ok but it didn't hold up to the abrasion of rubbing against my shoulder.

LisaP EXACTLY! I'm trying to figure out what combination of shoulder shape/bag fabric/bag design causes this, but it seems the only real answer is to "try on" a bag right away after buying it, even if you don't plan to use it until later, and if it slips, RETURN IT. Until I had the experience with the bone hobo last spring (and waited too long to identify the issue so could not return it) I never realized that bags could have this issue so now I check them immediately. I tend to have much more success buying bags IRL than via online ordering and I think this is one of the reasons.

featherwitch, yikes that sounds like no fun! Anything that gives you tendinitis is a no-go in my book.

one other comment....I don't really NEED any new bags at this point but I'd love to add a few in specific colors and shapes, so I'm happy to wait for the right ones.

Just a thought, but if you have any of those add on heel grippers that keep shoes from slipping, maybe cut a strip and apply to the underside of the strap? If it works it would probably only take a small piece to increase the friction enough.

I agree it is super frustrating when this happens.

Nina, good idea about finding a substitute strap, but I wouldn't want to do that with this Brahmin bag...it would ruin the look IMHO.

Suz, I do have quite a few totes and hobos that do NOT have this problem so I guess that means my shoulders are not sloped too deeply. . Just another thing that might work and might not, depending....

AviaMariah you are right that the Brahmin strap is fairly stiff. I think the slipping off the shoulder also has to do with how "grippy" vs "slippery" the fabric is. I have a Vince Camuto tote bag with stiff straps that never slips at all.

Thistle, good to know about Brahmin quality. If I liked that tote style I would definitely try it, but I just don't like carrying bags in my hands or on my forearm and very narrow shoulder straps (which this one has) tend to dig in.

Style Fan, yes the cross body is the surest bet for sloping shoulders.

Kkards, I'm in that club too! That hobo from this spring taught me an important lesson. Next!!

I have sloping shoulders too. I am curious to hear what others suggest. I use crossbody bags for everyday running around. For special occasions, I carry a clutch.

I have sloping shoulders, and I love Brahmin.

BUT!! I buy their totes. I need the storage. Yesterday, on a trip to the doctor, my Brahmin carried 4 picture books, 2 chapter books, 2 Kahshi bars, and a toy car.

I find that these bags really go the extra mile and look great even after years of use. They have spoiled me a little.

I'm not a bag expert but I have sloping shoulders too and it makes sense to me that a wider, softer strap would stay put better. From what I can remember Brahmin bags have a stiffer handle.

I don't have this fit problem because I have square shoulders, but I suspect a cross-body type strap would be preferable to a shoulder strap. Bummer!

Hmm.. for items you cannot return, substitute the strap(?), wear it in hand...

I haven't been posting much in several weeks, but did order a few things from NAS. I got a tan Brahmin shoulder bag, and I really like the color and texture, but the strap slips right off my shoulder. I have sloping shoulders, but I have quite a few shoulder and/or hobo bags that do NOT do this. It seems to be related to how slippery the fabric of the strap is, and it seems totally unpredictable until I actually try it. The Brahmin leather is in fact extremely slippery. I bought a bone colored hobo bag earlier this spring that had the same problem and I sort of fixed it by gluing a strip of drapery heading fabric to the inside of the strap, which looked ok and stopped the slippage, but the fabric started fraying at the edges so it was ultimately a failure. I now consider bags very carefully with this in mind.

I looked at the similar Brahmin in a satchel style (one of Angie's NAS top pics) but it's not right functionally for me, since I do not like carrying a bag in my hand or wearing it over my arm. The detachable shoulder strap is a bit too narrow for everyday use IMHO.

So, back goes the bag. As I said earlier, I really like it, but I hadn't quite fallen in love with it so I'm not sobbing. :-)

Cross body bags obviously don't have this problem, and I do have some of them, but they are too small for me for everyday use.

Has anyone found a way to deal with bags designed to be worn on the shoulder, that do not stay on the shoulder? The only solution I know of is return it and move on to the next possibility. :-)

#1 the bag that slipped off my shoulder

#2 the satchel style that is not right for me

#3 the bone hobo that had the same issue
