YAY !!!! Congratulations to you son....and to you for "motivating" him. I am particularly impressed with the math. Young people in this country are really falling behind in math and losing interest. We need more young people like your son.

Congrats to your son! Many, many, MANY extremely bright boys do not work up to their potential until college. The work before then bores them, and they don't see the point of homework, especially if they already understand the lesson. So they don't do the work, much to the consternation of their parents and teachers. Your kiddo deserves extra special credit. And his love of reading will serve him well.
Congratulations to both of you - firstly to him, for the achievements and secondly to you, for finding the right incentive.

As far as bragging of this sort is concerned, it is always welcome :-)

My 7th grade son received two awards at school today. The first one was for most improving his grade in math. While I was pleased with this, the bad side was that there was no excuse for his grades being lower before. He has the ability and doesn't find it difficult; he just didn't complete homework or try. So after grades came out 2nd quarter, I threatened to take his phone away unless he improved his grade. I guess I found the incentive he needed!

The second award was for reading over 3 millions words - the most of anyone in his class! Fortunately, he has always loved to read and has always exceeded his reading goals (kids need to read and test on a certain number of books or for a certain number of points each quarter).

I am just proud of him and wanted to brag a little! I am glad that the school makes an effort to recognize things like this, especially for kids who aren't as sports oriented.
