Congratulations Suz. Having the right bra makes a world of difference.

Some boutique stores are better than others. The one I shop at locally will sell you a bra in the larger band size and then alter it to the right size. I am not sure they still do that though since the owners would do the sewing themselves and the shop is larger and now employs at least 5 people. I was joking with one of the owners a month ago. She said she couldn't take more than a few weeks off in the winter because the store was too busy. I said when I retire I would fill in for her. They used to offer me a job regularly but one is enough for me.

There are a few great online stores. I have also purchased from barenecessities.com and for european brands brastop.com has great prices. There is size variation from brand to brand and even different styles within a brand. I discovered bratabase.com helps for this too. You put the size you wear in a favorite and it will list other bras and that fit similarly and reviews. It is all user based info and was very helpful when I was recently buying bras.

For pretty bits of fluff, check out Masquerade and Fauve. For those who are above an E, curvy kate is very good and also reasonably priced.

Yes, I agree...it is really tricky to walk in off the street and get an honest appraisal.

But here's the good news. In some ways I think a mistake or two in one's past can help. It made a BIG difference yesterday that I was able to go into the store and say, straight out: "Look, at an earlier fitting I was put in this and that bra in xyz size by Chantelle. Those have been my best fitting bras SO FAR. However, the band is very loose and the cups don't feel quite right, either. I've also worn the same size bras by ABC and DEF companies, and those are very ill-fitting. So I THINK I need to go up a cup size and down a band size."

This immediately gave the sales assistant something to go on. Not just size but also the shape of the cups that had worked or not worked in the past. Also, I made sure to research stores that carried a variety of sizes, especially for people in my size range. My experience in the past has been that the speciality shops cater to women with a larger bust but not to those like me.

Great news - bra shopping is so difficult. Like a few of the other ladies I have had the expensive experience of going for a fitting and ending up in a less than ideal size probably due to inventory.

Oh, I am extra happy for you because yesterday I went bra shopping myself, having dropped a couple of cup sizes, and found nothing. So I am so happy that you found success. I am full of hope because soon I'll be visiting a city that has a Nordies and so all shall be well.

One caution to anyone who's an unusual size and thinking of using a boutique type store. I used one a couple of years ago and was thrilled with the service and, initially, with the bras. But eventually I realized I had been a victim of the "We'll just put you in a...." approach. The common one: bigger band size, smaller cup size. I'm sure they just didn't have in stock the proper size. So I'll be sticking with bigger stores, at least till my weight is stable and I have a darn good idea of my size.

Yay Suz!

Yay, Suz! Bra shopping can be the pits. Our specialty shop here doesn't carry much if anything in the 28 or 30 band size range, especially not for nursing bras, so I always have to order online. Even knowing my size doesn't always work as styles and brands can make such a big difference! I'm glad you found a store and fitter that really worked for you.

Gaylene is spot on about Fig Leaves. While it's personally easier for me to get my oh so rare size and style from Nordies because I am there a lot anyway, I have plenty of clients who love to get their bras from this site - once they have a good idea about what they are looking for. And Gaylene, a lingerie addict sounds like a great thing to be. Why not!

Rae, that is definitely the telltale line. "We'll just put you in a 32..." ARGHHHHH!!!!!

You might be right that a demi-cup will work better now, after kids. But you might also find that when you get the right band size and go up in cup size, the fit will be better in those cups. I was suprised at the difference this made more me. Although it does depend on the brand, of course. Some just are not cut right for your particular shape. I had to try on quite a few to find the best fit.

Gaylene, thank you for that info on Fig Leaves. I had no idea the price would be so reasonable when ordering from the UK. I might actually order and have some delivered to my hotel in London for when I visit there. I could return on the spot! Or do they have real brick and mortar stores?

Suz, I'm off the forum for a while, but I just had to log in to encourage you to try ordering online from Figleaves in the UK. http://www.figleaves.com/uk/

My recent experiences with Figleaves has been a revelation for the following reasons:

(1) Huge selection of styles and sizes from Freya, Fantasie, Chantelle, etc. Even after converting GBP to Canadian dollars, prices are less than half of what I've paid for the same bra in a Toronto boutique--for example, the Chantelle bra that I purchased in TO for $100+ was on sale at Figleaves for less than $40. And, to make it even better, NO DUTY! For some reason, Canada Customs does not impose duties on lingerie purchases from the UK, unlike the rather sizable duties that are charged on lingerie bought from a US site.

(2) Fabulous customer service. You can talk directly to a customer rep if you have any questions--super nice and very helpful. Since I had a good idea of my size based on past fittings, I found reading the reviews gave me enough information to figure out what size I might want to try in some of the different styles. My parcel took about two weeks to be delivered.

(3) Easy returns. Although you will have to pay for return shipping, if you use a padded envelope, the return shipping costs are quite reasonable. Figleaves provides all the information in the original package, so the return process is quite straightforward.

I can't think of a single reason why I would ever want to purchase my bras and knickers any other way in the future. The only downside that I've found is that I'm turning into a lingerie addict.

ETA: Raisin, check out the sizes on Figleaves. They go down to a 28 band with cup sizes up to G and H.

Great news Suz! I HAVE to do this too next time I'm in a city that has a proper place! I got fitted here, but I suspect my band size is also too big, considering these are new bras and I'm already on the tightest hook and they feel loose. I should have known better when the lady that measured me said, "um, we'll put you in a 32" .... Yah, I suspect that means I should be a 30, but they only stocked 32's. I am also having a hard time with cup size because it seems like I spill out the top of Cs, but the Ds have a large gap at the top. What I've discovered is that maybe it's the cup shape. Since my boobs are not as , erm... full as they were before kids, I think the top half of my current cups don't get filled. I used to hate demi cups because of the spillage, but I think that maybe my solution now. Now where am i going to find 30D bras? Gosh I don't know, 32D was already getting impossible. Anyway, I'm sure you wanted to know all my issues, right? Lol! Glad you solved yours!

Yes - I went to Tryst on Queen Street. The fitter was very nice and brought me a huge assortment, considering I'm not a popular size. I looked up "large selection of sizes" or something on Google. The reviews of ALL the shops seem very mixed. I happened to be in this neighbourhood so I took my chances and came away as satisfied as I can be, for now! I am sure I haven't found my "perfect" bras but at least I have a few that fit and they are different styles by different makers so I can compare them over time.

Great news! The wardrobe is falling into place, while the womanly bits are firmly secured! Do you mind sharing where you did your bra shopping in TO?

At long last I got a bit of time on my own in Toronto to do some bra shopping. I came away, not completely prepared and bought up, but satisfied and somewhat vindicated.

First, as I suspected, I was in the wrong band size. (The person who sized me in Kingston admitted as much when I returned after a few months to show her that the ones she had sold me were already very loose -- but that was the smallest band they'd stocked.)

Moreover, I was also in the wrong cup size. I'd assumed I would need to go up one cup size, but I actually needed to go up TWO cup sizes.

No wonder I was spilling out of my cups before and had "pillow boob."

Unfortunately, the store I went to did not have my size in a basic nude bra. :-(

But they did have black. Plus I got a fun lacy one from a different maker, and a good black one from still another maker. And I now know a few types that work for me and can possibly order on line. All in all, I would say it was a success -- after months of waiting, failed online ordering attempts in the past, and various fiascos. So I'm happy!
