Tried the Loft white denim crop flares --- in the curvy fit. There was lots of room about the hips and abdomen, but they were sausage casing skinnies, with an odd sort of "lip" at the bottom. Calf sucking all the way, and I don't think sizing up would solve the problem.

Drat and Double Drat. I need to solve my white jean replacement problem. I was lulled into hubris by my success at BR!

Ha! Well, oversized and BF, I was on board. And kick crops, I'm also on board (if I find the right ones). I think in general, I will be "on board" with any denim silhouette that allows me to showcase footwear. I am a relatively straight hourglass (if that is not a contradiction in terms) so jeans are one of my best items, even though as a short person I need to hem most versions. BF jeans and kick crops have the advantage that I actually might not have to hem. So this makes them super, super easy in my world compared to many items!!

Aida, of course! That's why the crops are "clicking" with certain Fabbers and wreaking havoc with others. I've always loved oversized and BFs, and never really understood pant length.

I had a bit of a lightbulb moment with reading all these threads on cropped flares. I just realized that - FOR ME - the best I can manage with crops is JFE, and it can only go downhill from there. I can't seem get my head around that problem. Generally I'm fine with JFE, but I need items in that category to be easier to style. BF jeans and oversized don't pose that same dilemma; they may be JFE, but I get them and they get me.

Yes, that's it, Marilyn. How long our legs are, relative to torso, how long our thighs are, as Beth Ann said, where the rise hits us, what type of footwear we intend to use, how our calves are shaped...along with our general tolerance for the look, period.

Glory, I laughed out loud at "kick imposters." Ha!

I compared my petite BR high wash crops to the new resin version -- the resin wash ones were definitely shorter. So maybe the regulars will work in this on me.

You've got that right! This has been an interesting read. Banoffi said she's 5'2" and found the petite too long and frumpy looking. I'm 5' and do not find them too long or frumpy. I think a lot has to do with various body modifiers as well as our perception of how they look.

I also love the idea of this trend. Like Suz I am in jeans most of the year so a variation on the theme is wonderful. However I am 5'4 but up in a size 10 or possibly even 12 depending on the cut. I tried on the non stretch version at BR in regular and they look like kick imposters - too long, too snug. I am thinking of trying the gap ones but like many of you the petite rise is often too low and not available in stores to try. I haven't seen them anywhere else, in any stores so I may need to watch this trend from afar.

I hear you about the position of the flare, Suz! I think I must have a long femur (upper leg), too. I'm having no end of of grief trying to find flares/bootcuts that don't fit my knee like a skinny -- sausage casing around the knee is not flattering! I wonder if my knee hits a bit lower, while my calf curves out more quickly.

We are all made differently, aren't we? Good luck!

I am all over this trend, flare (when possible) and all. I have the weather and the shoe collection for it. Agree with Lisa that it is hard to get the flare to end at the right place, but I think it is worth it for a fun new way to wear jeans - hope to see you in yours soon Suz.

Hmmm. It sounds like everybody is fitting these pants differently. Wow! So much variation!

Sarah, do you have the resin wash or the faded blue? I have a pair of the faded blues that I sized up in, in petite. I always size up when I buy petites but I absolutely had to with the faded crops -- they are not stretchy and quite snug even in the size up.

The darker wash ones are a completely different fabrication --much more stretchy.

Re the Sloans -- I also had to size up in those and they are plenty snug. I think Elizabeth P discovered the same thing. It's sort of comforting to hear they really did change the sizing. (I.e. it's not just me changing size, which is also the case, LOL!)

Very interesting, Beth Ann. I think if they are longer the calf fit works better. It has to do with where the narrowest part hits. These do look good on you and so does the violet sweater!

Tanya, they never stock shorts in Canada. Only in the US. I wish I could order the short regulars here.

Aida, you're right about the rise lengths -- I almost never take petites, either for that reason, but I have found that by sizing up in petites I can sometimes get enough, depending on what the rise actually is, of course. That's what I did with the faded version of these crops (which fit more snugly than the darker wash and are a different fabric.)

FYI, Suz, I had to order up in the petites. The SA told me that BR recently changed the sizing in their pants. I've also had to size up in the petite Sloans. I've never had to do this before. And the sized up pair fits fine in the calves (and I DO have pretty full, muscular calves).

Hi Suz! Haven't had time to read the replies, but I do have these in my closet. They're longer on me than the model, but I still like the look on me. Curiously, I have wider than average calves, even for my size, but I have lots of room in the calf in these. I did not size down, since I needed the room in the thigh. They are not at all tight, but they "fit" the thigh, rather than slide down it, if that makes sense. I've found that they give, but not a whole lot. Here are my pics -- I think the camera angle is odd, and they're a bit dark, but they might help.

The proportions would probably be best with a heel, but I won't hesitate to wear with flats.

I hope you find the ones that work out for you, Suz. I have resigned myself to hemming when the jeans are too long ( and I have short legs so that is the cost more often than not) - petites would never work for me due to my very long rise. What does work though, when the jeans/pants come in short length. Regular size/short length that BR sometimes has has been a winning combo for a pair of kick-crop trousers.

Suz, I almost never take anything in petites (I'm 5'3"), and in bottoms especially so due to the rises never being long enough (I think you're similar there?). But with these cropped straights/flares, petites are a must unless you're willing to hem the regulars. I haven't found another way with them yet! So I have had my eye out for "high rise" pairs that come in petites, but don't fancy blue denim. Not a priority for me at the moment because I don't have the footwear, and I do have one blue pair awaiting hemming anyway. I will say though that the regs unhemmed make for, like, the perfect ankle length pants ^^

I tried them in the store. I am 5'7", a slim hourglass, and sized down like Angie suggested. I think it was size 27. I felt OK with the rise. They had enough stretch in them that they felt comfortable. I took them home and tried them on with all of my shoes/boots and just didn't feel like there was enough flare for my liking. They fit pretty snuggly on my 14-inch calves as well. I returned them the next day. I will keep looking!

LisaP, I am sorry if I sounded defensive! Not feeling that way at all -- just explaining why I'm interested in doing this. I have a couple of pairs of skinnies and straights that I also will wear as crops (and like) and I also have BF jeans of course. So it doesn't have to be a flare. But I figure if it is a flare, it should flare, if you know what I mean. And these particular jeans just don't look as if they fit right. I'll either order up in petites and see if that gives me ease and length, or order my regular size in regular and see how that works.

Thanks, Marilyn, for the extra info!

Definitely try the regulars, Suz. There may be enough of a flare at the bottom to take off an inch or so without messing them up if you need to. And it's an easy alteration with the fringed bottom.
Mine are longer than the model pic...but above my ankle bone. I think they look pretty cool! I love the little flare.
I wish BR Canada was more consistent with stocking short lengths. Even though I'm petite I often prefer the fit of regulars but need the shorter length.
I picked up this pair below as well....they're kind of fun with a lighter wash and the "undone" bottoms. Canada didn't stock the regular short so I had to get these in petite as well. The rise is a bit shorter than the Resin Crop.

Oh dear - I think I sounded harsher than I meant to I'm just musing aloud. I have worn and loved cropped pants forever. I love them too ! My absolute favourite style of pants is an ankle or cropped pant and the new jeans silhouette is great too. I'm thinking more of this whole "flared" nomenclature, which is a little deceiving as a descriptor. Many of these jeans aren't flared at all, even though they are labelled as such. Getting the little flare at the right place, and with the right fit at the thigh and around the knee is indeed a challenge.....and this all makes me wonder , well, why? Should anything be this complicated ? I picked up a few pairs of these last summer and I'll wear them again this year if they still fit, but I think the actual cropped straight has more longevity than a cropped flare. Why do I care about this so much? I'm not sure actually - just something I find more than a little intriguing here on this forum.

Hmm. I think these are closer to 3 or 4 inches above ankle bone in petite. Maybe the regulars would do it for me. Looking into this.

Apparently they DO stretch, Suz. Try the petites in a larger size, though, and you'll wear your crops a little longer - maybe 2 inches above the ankle bone.

If you only have one pair of denim crops, you definitely need more pairs.

Suz, I am just about your same height at 5' 4 1/4" and have the same problem with all pant lengths as you. I just ordered these jeans, one size down in both regular and short and will report back.

The details list the short option inseam the same as the petite at 24" which I think is in the sweet spot range for me in crops. It's about 2 1/2" above the top of my ankle bone. I hope these fit, I reluctantly ordered one size down from my usual size.

FYI, the short is almost sold out but the petite is still available.

Thanks for weighing in, all.

Clearly I need to take pictures and show. Marilyn, your answer was instructive. If they work for you in petite and you are 4 inches shorter than me, then that might be my problem. They basically look like skinnies on me because my calves take up the so-called flare. Thinking this means the length really is wrong and I should go for regular. But I will probably be "between" sizes at 5'4".

Marble, I am in Canada. We don't have the short option here. Maybe I should order from the US and have a fab friend send it to me. Sigh.

Una, I have another pair of cropped flares from BR (the lighter ones in my finds) and they work on me. They're not leg-lengthening, that's true, but they are JFE.

LisaP -- I really like the crops. First, like Viva, I've always been a secret fan of crops and ankle pants, period, even though unlike her, they don't flatter me as easily. Now that footwear has caught up to help "close the gap", I'm completely on board! (Except for our deep winter when they are not warm enough, no way no how!)

I guess I love any new denim silhouette and since I live in denim about 9 months of the year, it is absolutely worth it for me to play with this trend. Updated denim is one of the key ways I can keep my style fresh. Also, I like the crops because they show off footwear. (Yay, footwear!!) I also love showing a bit of skin at the ankle as soon as that is practical. It's a real boon because it provides a bit of structure and it balances light hair and skin on top. (Can you tell I get sick to death of my dark bottoms/ footwear combo all winter. Ugh.)

The resin jean is a different fabrication -- more comfy and lightweight than the fall version so easier to wear into the warmer months or on summer evenings. Also, I like a darker wash.

As for playing with lengths -- well, it's actually no different than my usual. I always have to hem or adjust the lengths of pants. This is my fate at 5'4" -- regulars are too long and petites too short/ don't fit my rise. So having to order a bunch of different pairs and not hem (or hem, if it comes to that!) does not seem like "a lot of work" to me. It's just par for the course for my body type. Pants are work, full stop. Everything requires alteration and if I find a pair that doesn't I think I got off super easy! So it's all perspective.
