There just seems to be a lot of fabric between the two pieces, in this particular combo. So yeah, the suggestions above make sense, even though those adjustments might not be what you are after. I find on me, sweaters with a side slit are better than a welt, with wide jeans.

I wouldn't give up on wide leg jeans though, if you like the look, as different styles can be very different. I have the J crew ones, and they don't feel overly voluminous at all. Maybe they are a bit slimmer on the thigh? I don't know, but I love how they feel and look... and bought a second pair. (wow, look how different the two pics look of the same pant!! With no body in them!!)

I know exactly what you mean Lisa. I see a lot of wide legs on other people and they look great . When I wear them I feel sloppy and in my eyes resemble a fire hydrant. I've tried so many iterations and cannot come up with what I like. I have two pairs of wide leg crops that I struggle with, I put them on to wear and end up getting changed EVERY TIME :(
I've also tried a straight leg and don't like that either. Guess I'll stay with skinnies for now as they make me happy but not particularly fashion forward.

On the road so haven't read all comments but it sounds as if you felt the way I did wearing my Cons and the BF jeans -- just too sloppy. I get it. A bootie might have helped but if you don't like the jeans, let them go and experiment with the cropped version some more.

You don't look like the side of a barn, in this outfit or any other! But I understand about not feeling fab in the combo. I also think having a structured/edgy element, maybe a blazer or sleeker (could be flat) shoes would help. Or bootcut instead of all over wide leg jeans.

For me I have a rule, I can only bear one (maximum maximorum 2!) items with casual features at one time in an outfit- or I would feel overly sloppy even for my casuals. I deliberatley didn't say 1 or 2 "casual item" at a time, because categorization of dressy vs. casual clothing item doesn't seem to work anymore. You have 4 here (sneaks, denim and the kind of bag& sweater I think...). Perhaps this may be a good place to start with and pobserve your own limits.

Vice versa is even more strict for me, I can only wear only 1 casual featured item in a dressy outfit and still feeling dressy enough (for ex a denim jacket- or a cardi-over a party dress-for on the way).

So glad I read your post because I was *almost* considering keeping a similar pair of jeans but thought they might feel too bulky and now you've made my decision easier. I can't stand bulk in denim of any kind. It just feels wrong.

I don't "need" more jeans, but I thought it would be nice to add a different style. Now I'm thinking instead I may create a raw edge to some straights I already own and love except for the length (too long and I've always worn them rolled in the past). I saw some cute raw edge jeans at Madewell but didn't love their extra high rise. I may try to recreate the edge on mine.

Lisa - I totally hear you. For the record, I was not suggesting that you wear your wide legs with higher heeled booties and a fitted top. It works for me because I have a more traditional style and a more conventional eye for proportions on myself, not to mention a dressier work environment.

Your style is more current and fashion forward than mine, so I actually think that sneakers and a fluid top look great on you with flares - and fit your lifestyle better. It's a matter of finding the right one, and whether it's worth it to you to add a new silhouette in your wardrobe. But I do agree - I think crops are easier to style because that tiny bit of ankle makes all the difference.

kkards - YES, I have done that so many times, which is the one big reason I gave myself permission to test these in the wild. It's not like I went to the gym in them or ate lunch in them, did anything different than would have happened inside my own house.

Roxanne - you get it, thanks. I am still leery /leary (no spellcheck here, ha) of wearing cropped and tucked tops/jackets. I think unless I drop 20 more lbs, I will always be self-conscious of slim fitting things on top. I have a bad habit of buying my sweaters and t-shirts too big because of it, and this sweater is a perfect example. All of this fussing to make a look work takes the fun out of it, and unless it just happens organically, I'm out. I don't WANT to wear dressier, heeled boots with wide jeans to go shopping - you know?

Thank you all for the styling suggestions, and of course, you are all bang-on. I had earlier success with wide legs (cropped though) , and all of it involved semi tucking and a more refined shoe. But sometimes you just want to throw your clothes on and go without having to overthink everything - you know? Clearly, that strategy doesn't work for me , lol.

congratulations on making it out of the house....usually if i'm on the fence, i put it on, get already to go out, and then change at the last minute. then a week later i try again, tell myself it's all in my head, cut the tags, and, yes, change at the last minute. but now the tags are cut...i normally don't return something i've worn out of the house, but i'm not ruling it out.
love the sweater, hear what you are saying re the jeans.

Honestly, reading your post in giving me anxiety. I know exactly how you feel. I tried the BR crops but realized, like Janet, that while I don't mind flares in fluid fabric, flares in denim (cropped or full length) make me feel dumpy and stumpy - especially when I add a topper which I inevitably need.

I added a pair of wide legs to my wardrobe this fall (The R & B ones), and I have a pair of grey wool ones too. For these, I have bought proper waterproof higher heel boots that I know work with them, have slim tops to wear on top, and short, cropped topers as well. So I know I can make both of those work in a way that feels luxe, polished and together for me. But honestly, it was so much work sorting out footwear, tops, toppers etc that I am not introducing any more silhouettes in my wardrobe anytime soon. Narrow and straight pants are what I will stick to, with my 2 wide legs for variety.

I think these do look good on you, but I think they will require that level of effort for you to feel polished and 'you' in them - spending time figuring out what toppers, tops, footwear. so it's all about whether you're willing to put that work in for the sake of a new silhouette. As I said above, sometimes I do that, but most of the time I stick to what I know to make getting dressed less frustrating.

You know, I’m thinking about it and don’t think I’ve ever returned an item after wearing it out of the house with tags. Maybe once? I would only do that if I’m doing something super safe like going to the post office, you know? Nothing involving any kind of sweat or food or drink or pets. Same if I try wearing something around the house — the dogs stay outside, and little Tippi can’t get in my lap. I feel like it’s just an extended try on not much more vigorous than I would do trying it on in my bedroom, but more effective in evaluating comfort and wearability (whether it bags out, shifts around, itches, etc.). Of course I would only do this when I’m freshly showered too. I would venture a guess that some fitting room try-ons are more, um, invasive, guessing from the makeup stains, pulls, and other things I’ve seen in stores.

And, I am with you on the desire for a bit of skin to add some structure. Would scrunching the sleeves have done that for you??

I think the jeans fit you well but they need a short sweater and pointy shoes.
They would look good with a short jacket or with a long jacket with a belt or a defined waist.
I understand that if you are not happy with them they are not for you, though.

I feel like your main discomfort was caused by this outfit being way too casual for you. I would change out the shoes for a dressier flat, nothing with a round toe. A tucked blouse, belt, and blazer or long cardi? Or a cute cropped sweater? What you describe is how I feel when I need to add structure to an outfit. Show some forearm, add a v-neckline, hint of waistline, a low-vamped shoe (toe cleavage fan!) with a point or almond toe.....

I'm a hard-liner on the wear-and-return subject. I don't care about what the sellers policy is, because we all know you can make the garment look pristine if you decide to return after wearing, they would never know. I don't want to be the next customer receiving that worn garment when I am paying for an unworn one.

I never thought about this before, I think you may have ruined shopping for me...... (as if, tee hee!)

I'm struggling with wide leg pants, too. I've moved my needle from all skinny to also including those with some room. I have one pair of truly wide legged ones I've been wearing lately and it's funny, I look in the mirror and they seem okay and then I do a photo and I look like a lego block. I think structure on top and movement rather than stiffness on the bottom might be the key.

I do try ons in the house for a few hours. I've occasionally taken something out with tags on but I've ended up keeping the item in all cases because I was so close to liking it for keeps anyway

I apologize for not having the time to read all the comments. I'm sure there is a lot of valuable information provided and I may be repetitive.

First, I always "test" wear a garment with the tags on. I usually wear it around the house. I do all my normal activities. Clothing are too expensive to not thoroughly put it through real life activities. If that garment works for me, I usually duplicate it immediately.

I admire woman that can stand in a tiny dressing room and know if something is going to work for them. That is not me. I need to sit to see if the knees will bag out. I need to pick stuff up to see how the fit is in the rear. I need to see if the buttons gap or the bra strap shows during normal day activities. I definitely need to feel the fabric against my skin to make sure I won't have any reaction. I take immaculate care of all my clothing. If I opt to return a garment I wore around the house it is ready for immediate resale.

Second, I feel your pain regarding what to wear with this new style of pants. Your post is something I could have written. What footwear? Do I own those footwear? Do I want to invest in those footwear? What top? Do I own that top? Do I want to invest in multiple tops to make the pants work for me? Outerwear? I probably wouldn't have gone that far.

I see this style of pant requiring me to reassess my wardrobe and perhaps invest in a whole lot of new pieces. My eye hasn't adjusted yet and I am completely unwilling to make that level of commitment. If I'm still wearing skinnies in 2020, so be it. They are much closer to my authentic self.

My initial gut reaction to your photos was everything looks fine but you look very uncomfortable,it’s too dark an outfit for your colouring and too casual for your style.l love the trainers on you though!
As for wearing clothes and returning,no I do not do that.l try on in the house on carpets and after I have had a shower.I try and return the item in as pristine a condition as it arrived.

I think the pants are fun and can see how a semi tuck or shorter sweater would work well. I'm not sure it's worth the effort if you don't feel fab in them. It's a lot of fabric to get used to for sure. Those yellow cons are fab for you. I hope those are staying!

Angie and others have the styling issue sorted. Glad you recognised that these were not for you before cutting the tags. No need to keep if they are not going to work for you.

I will try something on - several times over a couple of days, if I’m indecisive, and do a style lab (maybe 1 hour?) However I would not wear something outside the house, and expect to be able to return it, unless there was a flaw/quality issue that was revealed after wearing.
