Ms Maven, i know what you mean......it can be a very weird feeling. like with the 1980's revival, they revived all the stuff that i went out of my way to AVOID back then and ignored all the beautiful, inspired, breakthrough work of Lagerfeld, Chloe, Rykiel, Miyake, Valentino, Commes des Garcons from that time that i scrimped and worked to make happen for me (through Vogue Designer Patterns).....

i've seen the BR windows with this line...the 'yuck' factor for me is that it feels more of a reproduction of the look of the show as opposed to a 'drawing inspiration from and adapting for today's busy lifestyle' approach.

not sure what to tell you - hope the company helps steph

MsMaven....I've watched Mad Men and had the same negative reaction. All those pinched, corseted, repressed women! It's so depressing. I'm not a fan of that era or its fashion so I guess I'll steer clear of BR this fall. Maybe they're trying to rejuvenate their line...it's been a little tired lately!

I was around in the 70s and I love how 20th C trends get re-interpreted, revised and generally spun. I tend to think the modern take on older trends is better. Better fabrics, with stretch in a lot of them for more comfort! I have a dress I wear from the 70s, I wear it at least 10 times a year. Although I like the workmanship of yesteryear, I like modern fabrics so much more.

I haven't been shopping since the damage done at the NAS sale. Today I decided to take a look at the fall merchandise. I had the oddest feeling when I went into Banana Republic. Now, I only watched one episode of Mad Men and it was depressing, so I didn't watch again. I looked around in BR and I had the oddest feeling--as though I were in a dream from my younger years and I was looking for an outfit to wear on a date. Just like in the dream world, things just weren't quite right. The clothes were similar, but distorted.

I've seen many different eras come and go in the fashion world. I've laughed to see a patchwork skirt on a mannequin that looked just like a skirt I had in the hippie era. I've giggled over 70s flares and floppy hats. I must say that I've loved 20s and 40s revivals--but then I they weren't "my" eras. This early 60s stuff is just strange to me--perhaps because it brings back such an important phase of my life.

Then I went into Nordie's shoe department and it is just all wrong again. We didn't wear these exaggerated platforms and shapes and colors back then. We bought very simple yet classy looking pumps. Sigh.

One thing I've learned about fashion: This too will pass. I hope we do the 20s again soon. I love flapper dresses.
