They never felt like a slam dunk on my IT shape, even though I rarely have trouble fitting into a pair of jeans. For what it's worth, I didn't think sizing up improved the overall look. If they feel smaller than the grey ones, it may be that you are just more sensitive to a close fit in a lighter color. I know that's the case with me. I ended up buying a size larger in my white jeans for that reason--so it might be worth a try.
