As the oddball with no jeans of any kind for the past 30 years about, I feel obligated to answer but really have nothing of substance to add. In colder weather I wear Athleta Elation flare leg pants, sized up to fit less legging-ish. Or JJ Wear Ever pants that I've had multiples of for at least 10 years...two pairs still look new. In hotter weather (more often for my climate) I wear the best ever Athleta Cosmic Pants, which are stupidly discontinued, in their featherweight stretch fabric. They are definitely more trouser-like than the winter knit pants. I'd say they pass as trousers even though they are pull on.

Love seeing everyone's non-jean options! For non-jean bottoms, I wear a lot of Frank and Eileen. Their elevated sweatpants and chinos are perfect for Arizona living.

Lots of love for corduroy! There is plenty of it around online here in the US. Not as much in brick 'n mortar stores though. That in itself is interesting.

My non jean bottoms are; 1 cotton overall, 4 pair pants, 4 skirts, and maybe 7 pair of leggings. I also have five gear technical fabric bottoms. Because we have had an unusually warm January, I've been wearing my dresses over leggings.

Roomy skirts or comfy, loose pants, usually. Would love to wear shorts, but usually they are too short. The longer ones usually don't work on me.

In winter...usually jeans. Or cords. Rarely trousers.

Yes, lots of corduroy love in this thread! I'm really into having lots of different textures in an outfit, so cords help with that goal. These are the types of cords I've been wearing, from Uniqlo.

One of the fab things about fashion at the moment is the large variety of non-denim bottoms. This was not the case 10 to 15 years ago. Thankfully that's changed :)

Jeans are definitely a staple in my wardrobe. In the winter when not in jeans. I wear corduroy pants and I have a pair of velvet trousers that I will wear for a more dressy occasions.

In the summer it is dresses, skirts, cargo pants. I too would like to find more skirts.

I now have a nice collection of casual but refined denim-alternative pants that cover the seasons.

- wide leg track pants with elastic waists, that range in levels of refinement. The nicest are burgundy convertible ones from Me+Em, the most versatile are solid black and black with a white side stripe from Athleta. The most casual are a bargain TJMaxx purchase of Adidas pants and they are loungewear.

- wide-leg pants with athleisure fabrication but with zip fly for a more refined look - solid black from Vuori.

- I’ve moved away from this style a bit, but I do still have two pairs of cargo joggers.

- A couple of pairs of those pants that trended hard a year or so ago, with drawstring hems and a wider leg, in a sort of parachute fabrication. They are good for throwing on over my Pilates leggings.

- A pair of wool blend grey trousers from Proenza Schouler that I finally had altered to fit me better — they are a classic flat front trouser at the top but have a gathered hem detail that looks good with a snug-ankle boot. These are dressier options!

- a pair of wide leg plaid wool blend trousers by Drew, in a nice subtle neutral blend of blue, navy, grey and brown. I wear them casually with sneakers but they dress up with a blazer if needed.

- my pairs of Zero + Maria Cornejo Takeo pants — barrel-ish in shape but I believe they will transcend trend as they are distinctive and artsy while still being flattering. And I can wear them nearly year-round. These pants really expanded my style world when I got them a few years ago.

- in the same vein, my green Nili Lotan Shon pants. I had them altered to fit better too, and they’re so fun to wear. Another barrel shape that is wearable year round.

- for summer, I now have a small collection of linen blend, full-length wide-leg pants that are super comfortable and reasonably flattering.

- also for summer, a small collection of midi and midaxi skirts that get worn with tees and casual footwear.

- again, for summer, a small collection of shorts — not my favorite as I don’t love showing my legs, but sometimes they are the right choice.

- almost forgot, two pairs of chinos that are mostly summer wear. I’ve gone a bit off them but am hanging onto them because they are classic and well-made and I may enjoy them again next year.

- oops, almost forgot another category: my two pairs of Rag & Bone Miramar fabrication pants. Jean styling, sweatpant fabrication. Mostly for around home. Right now I’m wearing the old jogger style ones I bought from Alaskagirl many years ago!

Athleisure pants are my denim substitute and worn when lounging and WFH. I typically change bottoms when leaving the house (not a fan of wearing sweatpants to the grocery store). In cold months I’ll wear jeans or corduroy, in warm month linen pants or shorts. I’ve added in the occasional summer dress as well. For in office work days it’s jeans or trousers usually.

I wear skirts and dresses and also cargo pants. Dress pants only get worn for business meetings and I have not bought any since transitioning to working from home in 2021 other than some velvet pants - which are part of a dressy going out capsule.

I enjoy wearing my denim skirt and leather skirt as an alternative to jeans.

Thanks, everyone! Much enjoyed your replies.

Athleisure pants are a denim substitute by the sounds of it!

LJP, YES! Being my own boss allows me to dress the way I want to. That part is a plus. Denim is a big with my clients - with some more than others - because they are Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and the Silent Generation. Denim is not nearly as popular with Gen Z - who are not my clientele. Although I DO shop with them! Nephew and goddaughter are young adults.

Suz, that's good information, and makes a lot of sense. Good job identifying the WHY's and the wardrobe holes! Great analysis :)

Lately it’s been track pants and athleisure bottoms, especially after the holidays My other non-denim bottoms are several ponte trousers, and in the summer, two pairs of linen pants—new to me last year. It took a while to find some that didn’t bag out excessively on my flat rear. Or at least the cuts seem to minimize a baggy-butt appearance.

Angie, I do need a jeans refresh, I think, and I'd probably wear jeans a bit more often if I did one. But I do still love the jeans i have, they fit well, they are not untrendy, and they work for my different climate requirements. So the fact that I wear them only about a third of any given week on average is not entirely down to that. (Note that's an average -- I will wear jeans every day on some weeks! It all depends on my mood, the weather, and what's on the agenda.)

Still, my love for trousers has grown exponentially during the pandemic and beyond. The ones I own are all easy launder (I even wash the wool ones in delicate), so Brooklyn's objection does not apply to me. The different fabrications work for different temperatures. I like the combination of stretchy ease (or ease of cut) with structure in my trousers and also the drapiness and swagger of some. And maybe I"m finding it easier to "dress down" dressier looking pants than I'm finding it to "dress up" jeans to my preferred level of dressiness -- now that I don't own a single blazer except my little Paul Smith summer jacket? Hmmm. I think that might have something to do with it.

Mind you, now that my beloved jean jacket has bit the dust I will need a new one of those to dress down my trousers.

On the shopping list: a fun blazer and a really great cropped jean jacket with silver hardware.

As I mentioned on Lisa’s thread, I have a number of what I think of as denim adjacent pants. The twill barrel legs, the white military pants, 5 pocket cords, and the Trompe-l'œil “jeans”.these days for WHF I’m usually in athleisure pants, and I find joggers work really well for summer in office days. And yes, some times I go full preppie and wear chino’s/khaki’s.

It makes sense for your profession , Angie, as denim is the single most popular item of the last century. And styling them the way you do is a great selling tool . Being your own boss has lots of benefits too, doesn't it? I love jeans, but they just aren't the be-all and end-all for me. In fact , as I type this at 5:30 pm on a bitterly cold Friday evening, I'm in my pyjamas already ;).

Also high fiving al the cotton pants wearers! Irina, Jenni, Suz and Jonesy!

I decided a few years ago that I don't want to wear linen bottoms anymore. No linen dresses or skirts either. The occasional linen top is fine.

Thanks, everyone! Much enjoyed your replies.

There is style life after jeans :)

Glad the skirt divas Cookie, Brooklyn and Lyn67 chimed in!

For the most part I think that Athleisure bottoms compete with jeans these days. More so than dressy pants, casual pants that aren't Athleisure, cords, and skirts. Shorts are extremely popular in the US too.

Like LJP and Lyn67, I never wore jeans when I worked in an office (children's wear designer, retail buyer, and consultant). It was dress code! I only wore jeans over the weekend. I started developing a denim style when I came to the US and began my own business (20 years ago). I thoroughly enjoy denim because I find it extremely versatile, comfy, and robust.

To split hairs, half of my jeans capsule is not blue. It's white, patterned, or a non-neutral. That gives me variety, and feels like I'm not wearing jeans.

Suz, cheers to finding more skirts this year! Perhaps if you had a jeans refresh, you'd wear jeans more frequently?

Star, cheers to wearing dresses in Summer! Sal and Nuancedream too!

I rarely wear jeans, unless we are counting gear (e.g., I have two pair of dog-walking jeans, and a pair of jeans I wear whenever I'm going on a long road trip and/or moving furniture). Right now, I only have three pairs of jeans that I'll wear pretty infrequently, maybe one pair once every few weeks.

Instead, I wear lots of corduroy, wool, and cotton pants in the fall/winter/spring (plus the occasional skirt or dress), and at home I wear warm lounge pants. In the summer, I wear cotton pants, shorts, or skirts.
