I suggested to my daughter that she could wear some shorts she had that were similar to the Carla ones (maybe a little shorter?) for dancing the other week. We'd actually bought them to be worn under dresses as bloomers for a bit more coverage when playing.

DD didn't want them though - she wanted full length leggings. She is doing contemporary dance and that involves a lot of falling on the floor and she prefers her legs to be completely covered to protect them!

I've been wondering about the booty shorts too. I see them a lot at my gym and was wondering when short shorts became a thing to wear to the gym. I think it's just a fashion gym trend. I have to say that I was put off my one young lady who was exposing a lot of camel toe...yikes! At my gym it's just the younger set who seem to wear them. I don't think they are the hardcore workout type either. I personally like the fitted capris.

I can't imagine that booty shorts would "stay put" during physical activity, but then, I can't wear boy short undies for the same reason. Now, if they're the length Jockey slip shorts, and sit on the fullest part of my thigh? They will function for me, but not necessarily flatter.

I try to cultivate a generous attitude toward people who dress in a way that strikes me as provocative. While a certain amount of modesty grows out of my faith, I don't want to turn into a sniping "church lady!" I also feel like booty shorts worn for, say, volleyball, are different than booty shorts worn out to eat (yep, I've seen them), or to a concert. My daughter, fortunately, doesn't want to wear them. I do wish they weren't so popular around my kids' high school. It's not fair to judge women harshly, but it's also harder to teach my son to respect women's ideas and minds when the streets are the land of dancing booties!

Of course, now my 14 year old son is a cross country runner. The boy's team trains entirely without shirts, and in teeny-tiny running shorts. The girls in teeny-tiny shorts and sports bras. At least he sees them as athletes, not just eye candy --- and at least he'd have to chase them down......

On my recent trip, I did a lot of hiking, and I was a little surprised to see many young women hiking in sports bras and cropped tights like my running capris. I personally really prefer long but loose pants for hiking -- better protection against bugs and sun and cooler temperature-wise. But I also do a lot of sitting and crouching on rocks and such to take photos. Oh, plus...pockets. I need pockets while hiking. It seems like those tights would be way more prone to snags and runs with more rugged hiking. I probably look like the middle-aged fart I am out there in my pants and hat for sun protection but oh well. The sports bra hiking girls really do look like they're dressing for the admiring glances, but hey, as the kids say, you do you.

I have. to say that when I googled booty shorts it showed the ones Carla linked to. I'm not sure what practical use it would be to have ones that were shorter that that. I do have running shorts that are about that length but baggy and that is completely for practical reasons - they do NOT look good on me. I'm investigating running skirts, as capri length leggings, which I'm fine in at the gym, will be too hot for running when the weather warms up.

My gym is for people who work in my office building and that must effect the mores. No one in only bra tops or booty shorts! So I'm not used to the idea and not that comfortable with it either.

Yeah, in general, more coverage is better because of the prevalence of staph infections at the gym. I don't see myself switching to booty shorts anytime soon for pragmatic and aesthetic reasons.

I was thinking about different receptions to the same outfit online and in real life, where skinny women seem to get away with wearing certain clothing that deem them chic, whereas larger women who do the same are often considered to be wearing clothing that's too revealing or obscene. It's not fair, but there are definitely double standards.

I don't think it should depend on whether you have a certain body or not. Wear what you like and what you feel comfortable in. Gym wear should be performance oriented, sort of like activity gear.
I swear, when I read your post, even I thought of what Annagybe said. I've only been to gym a very short time, never lifted but always wondered about it being sort of sweaty icky.....

I got into heavy lifting when I was attending a ladies gym. I was the only lifter there and had the weights area to myself. It was lovely.

The only comfort issues were my hands...I had to wear lifting gloves, without them it was painful lifting the olympic bar, and my neck....I needed a pad around the bar for squats.
I wore 3/4 tights and a tee most of the time. It felt comfortable.

I started to lose motivation and figured that it was because I was alone and had nobody else in the gym area to watch. So, I joined a unisex gym. What a mistake that was! I had to use the common weights area because there was no squat rack in the ladies area. I hated it. The men dominated the area and the few women who lifted were heaps younger and wore tiny little booty shorts and bra tops, which made me feel like granny in comparison....lol. It seemed as if everyone was on display and all I wanted to do was blend into the background. It made me feel uncomfortable and out of place....so I stopped going.

I suppose I'm (unfairly) biased against the skimpy lifter's uniform because of how it made me feel in comparison. Realistically though, I can't see how booty shorts would provide any more benefit to lifting compared to 3/4 pants.

I don't see what Carla posted as "booty shorts" -- I think of booty shorts as the really short ones where you almost (or do) see cheek. And yes, I see women wear them for workouts.

Not for me (I have neither the booty nor the upper legs for this look), and not for the activities I do. However, I do wear form-fitting running capris, and bike shorts, and sometimes short-ish but not tight running shorts. Those suit my activities and my comfort needs the best.

But hey, I say wear what works for you. Horses for courses and all that.

I had to google booty shorts and as you can imagine I came up with a huge variety of images- some with less short and more booty!! I would wear ones such as Carla linked to if I felt they were the best choice, but I do feel the ones that are a bikini pant are less suitable.

I wear a mix of running shorts, knee length to full length tights depending on the season. I used to wear mid thigh Lycra but constantly had issues with it riding up in the leg - this was a a fair while ago now.

Just adding, below are what I refer to as 'booty shorts' also known as 'bun huggers'. They are the Lulu Lemon 'Groove' short. I've never seen shorter shorts at the Y or at any gym, though I've seen what look like bathing suit bottoms on competitive athletes.

You don't "earn" the right to wear clothes because of how your body looks. You wear what works for you and you want to wear.

If this works for you, rock it. If it makes you uncomfortable, select something that does work for you.

My gym was pretty modest, and you wouldn't see anyone dressed like this, so someone who was would stand put more.

Definitely agree about dressing for comfort and movement! My fav bottoms are 7/8 pants because they protect the shins during lifts, which means I don't have to wear socks. It's only in the last couple of years that I've seen booty shorts at a gym--never saw them before that, including when I belonged to a woman's gym.

Well, I work out at a YMCA that draws a mixed bag of fitness folks, so you see everything. Also, I own Lycra-spandex bottoms in 4 lengths and various degrees of cling (!) - booty shorts for running, mid thigh for running and biking, below the knee for yoga and weight training, ankle length for weight training and cool weather outdoor stuff. I wear race t-shirts or tank tops over sports bras.

You have got to wear what is comfortable for your type of workout - think range of motion, and what is going to keep you cool or warm (depending on your preference). You need a fitness capsule! I have 2 drawers of gear! :-D

FWIW, my current favourite bottoms are below the knee (capri) length leggings with a high waist and tummy panel! Keeps my back warm, and no 'dip' during squats.

like so many other things in life, it's all dependant on the who, what and where.....as in who do you workout with and where. if you are working out at your place of work or with co-workers or potential co-workers...then sorry these are totally inappropriate...(or if they are co-workers of SO).

I'm not a gym person, but I have seen the same shift take place among hikers and backpackers -- booty shorts everywhere, and when it gets too cold for shorts, lots of compression tights. I still prefer loose fits myself. I don't find form-fit athletic wear immodest or offensive, and I think if you find a pair that fit well, booty shorts might be very comfortable. Personally, I'm just too picky about seam placement.

As long as they don't squeeze you, I think nothing of it. Sort of coincidentally and somewhat related... I saw a person wearing normal pants today. Not skinnies or leggings. It looked really odd to me. I thought to myself that I've developed Star Trek mind. Like I used to think all those Star Trek costumes uncomfortably shape showing - like boy you always have to be standing up straight and sucking your stomach in. But now, I kinda prefer it.

Interesting enough, I still put bodycon in a different category. I mean like Kardashian style. There's a flamboyance there I'm not comfortable with - and a boring quality I'm not comfortable with either at the same time...

I'm with the others. Depends entirely on comfort levels and the gym's culture.

I am old and imperfect and I wear shorts in summer at the gym. Not booty shorts, it's true -- but shorter shorts than I would feel comfortable wearing for streetwear.

No more immodest than wearing a bikini at the beach, if that is the norm. As stated above, being the first would be attention gathering, but being first usually is. That said, definitely not for me!

I don't go to a gym so had to look up what booty shorts were. I would feel very self conscious but think it's fine if people don't feel self conscious.
That said I don't have much booty. Can that kind of training build booty....maybe I should take it up.

I was a CrossFit coach for many years-- I saw lots of booty shorts and lots of booties that snuck out of said shorts. I guess at that time in that place it would have been considered appropriate, as the norms of the gym were that it was totally fine to run around half-nekkid. That said, even if it's appropriate, it doesn't neccesarily make it modest. Not that everyone wants to be modest, and I think that's a matter of personal preference.

I once had to ask a male athlete to change because he was running around in shorts so thin, short and (unintentionally) revealing that it bordered on obscene. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same for a female athlete to was unknowingly falling out of her booty shorts, which, incidentally, happens all the time and no one ever wants to tell the person wearing them.

That's my .02!

I feel about this the same way I feel about wearing a sports bra in the gym without a top over it: it totally depends on your gym's individual culture. If it's common in your gym for women to work out in booty shorts or a bra by itself, there's nothing immodest about it. It's the norm. OTOH, if everyone else wears pants that cover more than two inches of thigh and keeps their belly under wraps, then choosing to go against that norm can, perhaps very unfairly, come off as attention-seeking. In either case, I definitely do NOT feel as if you only earn the right to wear booty shorts or a sports bra at the gym by having a "perfect" body. You earn the right by being there doing the work. Ultimately I feel like, wear what you're comfortable with, be aware of the gym's culture, and if you choose to go against the norms, make sure that doesn't bother you.

I get the perceived practicality of them for certain sports . But I think they are a product of marketing and fantasy- can you play volleyball or lift weights any better wearing them ? But hey , if you're into them , then that's cool. Wear whatever you want - and whatever you are comfortable in .
