I don’t think they look dated in your pics, fwiw. I like them on you. And the way you styled them.

. I need to round up pics of the ones I usually wear. I have not bought any new ones in several years except Docs, which are floral and a pair of solid periwinkle ones.

cat2--that is a good idea to wear full-length pants. Especially wide-leg, I would guess, but I bet it would even look good with straight leg blue denim. Because people are mentioning a Western vibe.

Firecracker--thanks for the compliment. I really do like all your boots, and what I like about them is that they have a real winter-ready feel without being snow boots. So many ankle boots advertised are less walkable.

Suz--thanks. I am a person in a small space with a desire for not too many items,so I don't know how many new ones I would get. But if the right one came up, for sure. Not too high, not too low, very, very comfortable.

I also like your outfit and the boots themselves. They look as if they are a lovely bronze. There is a slight Western vibe to them (which is on trend). Having said that, if you wear them often, you might want a change! Nothing wrong with that, either.

I really like that outfit, Carol--the top layered under the sweater, with the corners dipping out of the slits is such a cool detail.

I don't see dated, either, but I can understand you might want a different silhouette after a while. I like boots that come up a little higher but not too much so, because I also find they can be uncomfortable on my calves. I like lace-up booties for that reason: you can loosen the ties as needed and even leave the top couple of eyelets un-laced if you want.

Here are Finds for some of my booties with taller (but not too tall) shafts. Admittedly, most of mine are pretty flat, not heeled.

Carol, I have muscular calves and can’t stand most things (boots, socks, skirts) that cut off right at the widest point of my leg. But boots that hit below that point or above have been fine. I second the suggestion to wear your current boots with full length pants for winter, and also suggest closing the pant-boot gap for winter with some tights or socks.

Angie--thanks. I do think they look great, but maybe I just need to find the right outfits, because sometimes they seem very awkward. I love all your boots, and especially the idea of giving yourself "permission" to toss aside high heels. I wonder if this new narrow shaft trend, seen in the photos in your first reply, even work for curvier bodies/calves.

Carol, first, there is nothing dated about your boots! They look fabulous, and so does your outfit :)

I echo Suz and Janet on their boot guidance. Although wedges are not dated ;)

Perhaps seeing everyone's booties will inspire you in one way or another. So here are mine. I don't wear heels, and keep it VERY comfy. Mostly refined, dressy, and pretty too. Prefer a higher shaft and low or flat heel. The last pair are party boots for fancy occasions in which I sit most of the time - heels too high for everyday use!

Suz--p.s. I would be looking at a heel height about like the second or fourth of your photos.

kkards--I do like the Western look a lot. I worry that those boots have no support on the bottom of the foot, but I don't know.

Dee--I do like that first pair you show--it's counterintuitive to me, who likes more dainty boots. But I think it's just so chunky it would work well with a feminine vibe. It reminds me of some motos I have.

Janet--These are the boots I have. I really enjoy all your boots, because of all the variety and unique details. I think I would try a sock bootie, but I'm afraid it wouldn't work with my chunky calves.

It’s hard to see details of the boots you’re wearing in the photos, but specific to those boots in that particular styling, I think you may be happier with a higher shaft that fits closer to the ankle for wear like this with a skirt or cropped pants. With long pants I suspect those boots look ok. But again, hard to see details of the heel style.

I’m especially enjoying sock booties for that close ankle fit, and like Kkards, I’m also all about a taller shaft these days - great with crops or skirts, so very versatile. I also have a few western styles, which are trending, but also classic enough that I’ll wear them even when not trendy. Chelsea boots and moto boot styles seem pretty timeless and more style-specific, so I wear them for years on end.

Wedges seem a little dated to me right now, but that may be my eye. These days I think not much looks truly dated — just some styles suit different wearers’ needs and personal styles better. I tend to prefer either a substantial, stompy boot or a sleek, refined, pointed toe style. Something that’s too in between feels a little wishy-washy for me. Most of my collection is below — some are 10 or more years old, while the black and white western boots and the Aquatalia black ones are new (and getting lots of wear). Clearly I prefer a block heel or something sculptural for a dressier style, and a lug sole for more casual.

I'll still wear some of my ancient comfy ankle boots when I have ton of walking to do or the weather is particularly crummy, so I sympathize with giving up a favorite pair.

I did purchase a fairly comfortable Chelsea boot with a slight heel and also a zippered lace-up ankle boot with no real heel but a flexible sole for more comfort. Both seem to work well for my current style which is pretty casual

I guess I should note that none of my current booties are actually ankle boots, I’ve moved to a taller shaft -my sweet spot is 6 inches, but I have some that are slightly lower and some slightly higher

Like Suz’s I still love and reach for my Aquatalias, a lot. I don’t feel they are on trend, but I think the simple and basic shaft keeps them out of the “dated’ category. More on trend is the cowboy/cuban heel bootie. Also a Chelsea boot, I like a slight heel instead of a true flat. Also I don’t know if wedges, are current or dates, but I think the pointed toe helps to make this style look current.

Overall I’ve read that sock booties are trending again, so maybe look for a boot with a close fitting shaft with a heel that works for you.

Thanks, Suz. These are great. I like the black ones a lot. The second look like Beatles boots, the third I wonder if they stay put on your calves.

I can see that a chunkier heel is available now, too. Narrower shaft, though.

So what heel height works best for you?

I agree that a thinner heel is not likely to be as practical and you can get away with a higher heel if it is a stable block heel.

I don't do well in complete flats but nor do I do well in heels. My sweet spot is somewhere between 3/4 of an inch and 2 inches, 2.5 if there is a platform.

The Aquatalias are my oldest ones -- a little dated maybe ? but I still wear them. Though they are beginning to show their age. And their heel is on the upper end of what I can wear comfortably now -- it's about 2.5 inches, I think. The Blondo western booties are 4- 5 years old. Again, maybe not the most current but still wearable. The Sam Edelman chunky soled Chelsea is from last year -- a more casual boot. And the other two are new this year. They are all quite classic, I guess, and easy to walk in.

Ankle boots...when you really find a comfortable pair, you're unstoppable. Unfortunately these seem a dated style...gently used Clarks when I bought them. Still got a lot of life. In person, they look pretty good, but when I see pictures like this, they look dated.

I am wondering about the new styles. They seem a little less...practical. I notice a higher, thinner heel is popular now, maybe not so great for doing a million things. On the other end is the flat Chelsea boot. Are there heeled ankle boots in today's styles that you can go, go, go in?
