If you really wanted to keep them, maybe you could try a lighter weight garment in a contrasting register --- a simple knit dress say, or a floaty chiffon skirt, to offset the chunkiness and make it look playful rather than orthopedic/functional? I fear heavier-weight fabrics and 'practical' garments (denim, corduroy, tweeds) will only emphasize their 'workman' aspect rather than their offbeatness --- unless they were in very 'impractical' colours MAYBE (pink? peach? white? yellow?).
