You can really wear so many different types of booties with a dress. These are mine. I also have an older pair of born Born high-heeled booties that work.

I added two pairs of these Vionics as I needed lower shaft ones for exactly this reason to wear with dresses...I bought the tan and black ones and adore them... I even wore the black ones to my sister's memorial service last week...

Thanks for the replies.

It is good to know that a lot of it is up to you and what you think looks good with your leg length/shape. That said, the advice here has been really helpful from keeping the bootie closer to the ankle as Gigi and Staysfit mentioned to Suz's and lyn's and others' suggestion to think about low contrast/column of color. As always trying mentioned, I will really pay attention to the height of the shaft, as apparently my calves are large -- they require "wide widths" for taller boots.

Chewyspaghetti, Joy, annagybe, Suz, delurked, anne, Gigi thank you for the photos!! It's so helpful to have a visual!

I've gone ahead and ordered the two pairs in the finds below. I am hopeful I can make this look work for me.

I do this no fear(anymore:-)) all the time! The magic is in styling legs rather in a column of color and NOT cutting them in parts. My booties are black (but different textures-suede and patent lover here:-)), styles (cut offs and light sole for spring/fall, more covered and dark soles for winter) and refinement (stacked cowboy/block heels, wedges, or daintier heels) for this exact reason, as I do wear them mainly with black sheers or opaques. I may have some booties and skirts/dresses looks in my archive, too.

I don't have a good pic of my favorite pair, but the magic quality is that they wrap tightly around my ankles. I think anything with that sort of fit looks best with a dress or skirt.

Boots with dresses is such a subjective thing. The ladies have pretty well covered the variables. I will say that I don't mind it, no matter the variation. I think it looks both practical and stylish when it gets cold.

It can be tough to find just the right thing. As Suz said, there are a lot of factors that can affect how the overall outfit looks.

I find that booties that are straight across at the top tend to have a leg-shortening effect, while those that have a V at the vamp tend to lengthen the leg. Interestingly, I find that I often like the leg-shortening ones; that is because my legs are proportionally long for my body, so if the bootie has a high heel, it can be overkill to emphasize the length of the leg through a V vamp.

If you are wearing shorter skirts and will be showing more leg, then you could perhaps get away with a higher-shaft bootie. But if you are wearing a relatively long skirt (knee length or midi), I would probably go for one with a shorter shaft. Otherwise, the leg line can get too broken up and it looks like there is too much going on. But I am short, so YMMV.

If you have skinny legs, you might want to look for a bootie that has a shaft that fits closer to the leg. Otherwise there can be a lot of gapping. Some people are fine with the gap, but others dislike it. If you dislike the gapping, just keep looking. There are booties out there with smaller shaft circumferences that won't gap so much, though it might take some time to find them.

I thought it was strange at first but am used to it now - it's quite pervasive where I live for ofice wear. However I've deleted all my pics of my phone so can't find one right now. Will get back to you when I do.

I have to say that despite having lots of body similarities with Suz, I have just worn them, and not given as much thought to it!

ETA here's a few

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....shirtdress

http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/red-skirt (perhaps not such a good example)

Also ETA - I haven't worn this as much this last winter since I got my nude dress shoes, so I'm thinking maybe it did bother me somewhat!

It depends a lot on the dress, on the kind of hose you'll wear (if any) and the shape of your own legs (and your feelings about that.) The length/ shape of the dress or skirt is also relevant.

Obviously a more casual bootie would look better with a casual dress.

More refined (pointed toe, narrow heel, or some special leather) will look more dressy.

In my case -- my calves are proportionately short (and I am not tall) so one trick I've learned is keeping the contrast low. So...if wearing bare skin or nude hose, booties in a "nude for me" tone or one that blends pretty well with my skin tone will be leg lengthening. It doesn't have to be exact, but a taupe, cream, or pewter tends to tie in and extend the leg line with bare looking legs more than a dark bootie. If wearing hose, which I pretty much have to do for half the year, I try to tone it to the bootie. This means I'm restricted to dark footwear in winter quite a lot. Sigh.

Bookending your booties to your hair or some other outfit element is also useful. It might not extend the leg line but it gives the outfit cohesion.

The first pictured booties have a sort of V at the vamp. This is flattering since it extends the leg line like a lower vamp shoe. The style is from a few years ago and is not super current now, but still in style. It works especially well for dresses.

I've worn booties similar to the ones below (or the exact ones) with different types of skirts and dresses, with varying degrees of success. If the bootie has a higher shaft it is important for the fit to be fairly close if possible.

I have a pair of black suede ankle boots with a pointy toe. The heel is less than an inch and decorated in big rectangular rhinestones.
Worn with a variety of dresses at some pretty fancy events.
ETA similar to these, but no elastic gore, and lower shaft height

Prsonally I only wear low ankle booties as I find higher shaft ones on me make my fat calves look bigger. I see a lot of all shaft height booties, and dress skirt lengths, with varying amounts of leg showing. I think there is no right or wrong look for booties with dresses and skirts. I think it is what you feel looks best on you.

I can't wear heels so any heel is quite low. Here are some that I am wearing with dresses and skirts. It did take me awhile to warm up to booties with frocks but the eye has adjusted and I feel great wearing them.
