Thank you all so much for your invaluable input and links! I am very happy that it seems that both pairs of booties will work with skirts. I will stick to casual outfits with Report booties, I wear casual most of the time anyway.

Great links, Anna. And I'm glad Angie chimed in on this. She alludes to a point I didn't make. I find the Reports work best with a very casual skirt/ dress look, or one that is heavily casualized, if that makes sense. So I like them with my denim skirt, and I also like them with a dressier midi skirt IF I'm wearing my jean jacket as the topper. Not saying it has to be denim, but including another casual element in the outfit makes a big difference. On a trip, due to lack of options, I had to wear the booties with a slightly dressier jersey dress and did not feel as comfortable. It LOOKED okay, if not brilliant, but didn't feel as good to me.

I think the Report booties will work well in a rugged, UN-structured and casual way with dresses and skirts, Tanya. Go for it!

I think both pairs are fine to wear with dresses, particularly since they don't seem HUGE and because the come up over your ankle bone. As you pointed out, when the booties are under the ankle bone I think they look best snug, but higher up I think it's OK to have a little gaping (or a lot, depending on the style).

I don't think the gap in either the Reports or the Aerosoles is too much - I would wear them with skirts/dresses. I think it comes down to a personal choice for you and what you are comfortable wearing.

I have slim ankles and I would wear both #1 and #2 with skirts/dresses, BUT I have an element of oversize/slouchiness to my style that I don't think you have Tanya. So I would be inclined to say that #2 would work, but #1 would be too gapey.

I will take more pictured tonight with hose/tights of both pairs and see if that changes anything.

My eye has adjusted to this look, in part due to seeing Kate Bosworth, Alexa chung et al rocking this type of boot (with gap) with shorts and dresses. If you feel confident in the look I would say go for it.

I returned the Frye Carson shorties for ankle gappage like #1 here. The others look beautiful to me. We skinny-ankled gals have to put up with some gap at times, I fear...

I am wondering with tights (obviously for Fall) if it wouldn't be so noticeable? I think #2 is great for skirts as is - a little looseness is not bad. I love those shoes in #3.

Tanya, my Reports look pretty similar on me, and I don't have your advantage of long slender calves (I have slim ankles but more muscular and shorter calves). And I wear my Reports with skirts and think it works!

I DO understand what you mean, thought; this is a VERY loosely fitting bootie. But it is made to fit that way. And to look that way. In other words, I think it appears intentional. The gap is much more noticeable to the wearer than to anyone else because the bootie reads as nude.

ETA just re-read what Jonesy said; she's absolutely right; that bootie is not meant to fit snug.

I love the Aerosoles on you, too! Gorgeous! I see what you mean about the gap there, as well, but I think if you wore with dark hose, it would not be noticeable. And in any case, they look great.

i'm really sensitive about ankle fit so #1 does not do it for me. #2 is a closer call.....they are so beautiful yet i think i a tighter fit would look better. maybe it's not so obvious though when you look at the whole outfit....no one will stare at your ankles that closely!

The looseness doesn't bother me at all--I think your ankles would have to be very large to fill up the booties (i.e., I don't think they are meant to fit snugly on the ankles). Love those Aerosoles especially--fab! This is just my two cents, obviously--others might have different standards about booties and gappage :).

I have very skinny calves and ankles ( chicken legs) which tends to present a lot of problems when fitting boots and booties. I have recently scored Report Marks booties in taupe on great sale (#1), and there are also these cherry red Aerosoles (2) ones from a big clearance in February.

I love them both and will wear them a lot with various pants. However, I was wondering if I could get away with them with skirts since they are quite loose around the ankles. I am not particularly concerned about the leg line here, only ankle fit, as I do not want to look like I am wearing rain boots. For comparison, there is a photo of tan sandal/booties that fit they way I like around the ankle, probably because they are cut lower, under ankle bone. So, are the first 2 OK for skirts, or, once fall comes, should I look for a model like #3 but without cutouts, obviously?
