Isn't it nice that we no longer have to worry too much about wearing something that's not "in style?" It used to be that if you didn't wear the latest silouette, you looked and felt conspicuously out of date. Today's concerns are more about dressing to suit one's personal preferences without looking frumpy or inappropriately dressed.

I have probably done all of those things depending on my budget, how much I loved the piece, and the energy I was putting into my wardrobe.

I have also continued to wear something happily and the one day realised it was not at all right!!

I am trying (trying being the word rather than always succeeding) to buy things that I love despite of where the item is in the fashion cycle. And if the piece is a more trend driven one, to only buy one of these pieces and wear and wear and wear it!!

I do think most fashions have a longer lead time and phase out time now, so pieces can continue to be worn for several seasons. Peplums/boyfriend jeans/cut out booties/harem pants/hi-low hems.....all pieces that have trended and can still be worn in a totally fashionable way or a totally classic way or somewhere in the middle!

I have a pair of bootcuts that have been in the hold on zone for the past 3 years. I hope they still fit.
As Janet, when pants fit I keep them because they are a hard fit.
But adressing your bigger question. I do not purge thingsthat are out of style if I really like them or if they are a good fit for my body type.

I am with LisaP that this spring seems more about real flares than just bootcuts, in particular on the jeans front. Trousers could be another matter; somehow they seem to take longer to look dated especially if they are work type pants.

If I LOVED them I'd keep them. If I bought them because they were fashionable then I'd let them go.

I culled 4 pairs of bootcut jeans from my closet last year. I bought a new pair this year, but in a longer length and in corduroy instead of denim. Somehow the new pair looks dressier, and I think it's because of the length and the fact that the fabric is smoother and drapes better than the denim. That said, I have no plans to buy more bootcuts, as I have my flared dress pants and a new pair of flared trouser jeans to wear with 2" heels. Note to self: don't buy any more bootcuts that can only be worn with flats; not a good look on me.

I am absolutely guilty of buying, tossing and rebuying boot cuts in this exact manner. I have no explanation for it other than I'm an idiot, and freely admit it. I have decided, however, that pants need to be actual flares and not just boot cuts. I get the dumpy rural feeling from boot cuts, but a cooler vibe from flares.

I don't actually have Guilty Bootcuts now. I have a couple of mild bootcuts I'm still wearing.
I was just musing about the possibility, because I'm in cull& toss mode and then there was Angie's blog post.
I do think the Mirror of Truth is the best
friend. Really give everything a hard look.

I'm assuming that they fit and flatter excellently and are in excellent condition.

If I felt like wearing them, I'd do C. If I never felt like wearing them, I'd do B. Pants that fit and flatter excellently are too rare a commodity to pass on without a really good reason. They'd have to be visibly worn or dated beyond a shadow of a doubt (I'm talking velour juicy track pants dated).

"I think and can be over-influenced, even by YLF, by an overabundance of trend/update images and messages " <-- Yes, me too. I think avoiding this is a matter of defining ones' own priorities and being comfortable with enjoying the images and messages in their own right rather than seeing them as a bar to measure oneself against.

I'd keep them and find ways to wear them that made me excited!

I actually had this exact issue. I have a pair of perfectly-fitting mid-blue bootcuts that, when worn with heels, are very flattering. They make me look taller and my legs look long. But I tended to feel like a (slightly frumpy) cowgirl when I wore them. Not ideal. So I went through my closet one day and tried them on with everything, keeping in mind 'anti-cowgirl' as I went. I've discovered that upping either the hard rock vibe of the outfit, or else the Tim Burton vibe, is exactly what's needed to make the bootcuts feel cool. For me, this means wearing them with lots of black and perhaps a bit of white, long coats and jackets, and rock star or steampunk boots.

OK, my quick reactions: First of all, I'm curious to see these trousers -- what makes them "out of style"? Second, I am a difficult fit in trousers, so even though I don't wear them often (ok, almost never), I am reluctant to get rid of any that are particularly flattering and well-fitting, even if they're in a style that's not currently trending. This is why I have some pants that are 10+ years old but I'm not throwing them out.

So, is fitting trousers problematic for you? Do you think it would be more of a burden to shop for new pants than to embrace the ones you have and style them in a modern way? Do you even still *like* them? Are they classic enough in style that they don't look dated, even though they might not be the most current thing around?

Merging closet purging guilt and bootcut/flare themes here, to achieve some sort of alchemy......

Let's say you had a pair of bootcut pants that still fit and flattered excellently (that would be key) but they seemed "out of style" .
Would you:
a) toss them, and a year or so later buy another pair that would then be defined as Modern Classic just because you bought them in the current calendar year?
b) Save them in the hold bin and only bring them out if they were trending again, (and then maybe find they don't fit, have a moth hole, etc)
c) Keep wearing them but work reallly hard (having fun doing so, of course!) to mitigate the un-trendiness with other updates you like anyway ( oversized sweater or high-low or cropped or whatever is your cup of tea, plus footwear.

I have yin-yang moments of really understanding updating items vs feeling a pawn of fashion winds and re-buying same things. And Ihink it might apply best to particular body type/item type items that continue to "work" and transcend other changes in styles--dressiing your particular body.
So I think I can usually identify when "my eye" may have changed for good on a particular item--if you look hard, there is something off about the fit, the "I wouldn't buy it again thing"

But in some of my save-the-planet or budget-conscious moments, I think I reallyl want to identify those items that I want to keep wearing (until it wears out, doesn't fit) but also want to really wear as part of a modern outfit and yet don't have the complete Personal Style confidence to do so without some work--but I think I'd feel rewarded and satisfied if I could.
This is where I could border on having or avoiding purging guilt, I think and can be over-influenced, even by YLF, by an overabundance of ttrend/update images and messages compared to what people are actually wearing in most of the country.
Sort of Update with a dose of Reality.
