So I see your point. There are couple of reasons for me to store my shoes in boxes. I don't have a special shoe cabinet right now because I like having my shoes in the same place with my clothes for matching practicality. My closet is in the third floor and my shoe cabinet is in the first floor. I don't like keeping shoes unboxed in my closet and the shoe boxes that come with the shoes are not practical. I want to see the shoes in the box otherwise I forget about them. I like my shoes boxed because I don't want to stack them on top of each other (I have way too many shoes), I don't want them to get dusty and I feel that it''s more hygienic that way. I have a few top shelves in my closet dedicated to shoes (organized by color) in clear boxes now and when I'm getting dressed I can just look up and see my options. It's just pulling the box out and getting the shoes. When I'm done wearing them they air out for a day in the first floor and come upstairs with me the next day. Everyday, I bring the shoe I wore the day before upstairs. (Granted that may be too many shoes.) My solution is that shoes are the one thing I store away by season. This also helps with dust. Of course, it does mean that I have to keep the boxes but I just keep half the boxes and keep the stored season's shoes in them (boot boxes will accomodate 2-3 pairs of sandals and I have more sandals than boots). They do the job just fine. My slouch boots don't stand on their own for some reason (with the newspaper in them, that is). I also use rolled up magazines (the thicker the better) to keep the boots upright, and I line them up on the shelves inside my closet. I plan to buy some plastic boot boxes and store them in those under my bed come summer.
