Aha! The stacking integrity of the boxes makes perfect sense, LOP. I stack my shoes on shelves so that they are neat. I also have a walk-in wardrobe so my shoes don’t seem to get dusty. Also, I just don’t have that many shoes :0)

Mamapickle - I don't have enough hanger space (very small closet).

Jewelrygirl - wine bottles? Very creative! Although I'd worry I'd drop the bottle on the floor and it would break!

Louise - I'm so short, dusting the top closet shelf is just not convenient.

Legacy - I like the clear box option but I think I'd just end up with the situation I had before with the original boxes. They'd still be hard to see, reach, put back - because I'm so short.

Jane - I'd love to see a photo of your boot collection on top of the armoire!

Joy - when I store something under the bed, I tend to forget it's there. I do have stuff under the bed right now, but I'm trying to pare it all down ... ideally, I'd have nothing under there, so the Roomba could do its job more easily! (not to mention no scary monsters could lurk under there...)

Angie: I felt the same way in the past. So I see your point. There are couple of reasons for me to store my shoes in boxes. I don't have a special shoe cabinet right now because I like having my shoes in the same place with my clothes for matching practicality. My closet is in the third floor and my shoe cabinet is in the first floor. I don't like keeping shoes unboxed in my closet and the shoe boxes that come with the shoes are not practical. I want to see the shoes in the box otherwise I forget about them. I like my shoes boxed because I don't want to stack them on top of each other (I have way too many shoes), I don't want them to get dusty and I feel that it''s more hygienic that way. I have a few top shelves in my closet dedicated to shoes (organized by color) in clear boxes now and when I'm getting dressed I can just look up and see my options. It's just pulling the box out and getting the shoes. When I'm done wearing them they air out for a day in the first floor and come upstairs with me the next day. Everyday, I bring the shoe I wore the day before upstairs. Does this make sense?

I'm with Angie on this one so I think your current strategy is a good one, Shiny. *But* I do have enough shoes at this point that they just won't all fit in the closet. (Granted that may be too many shoes.) My solution is that shoes are the one thing I store away by season. This also helps with dust. Of course, it does mean that I have to keep the boxes but I just keep half the boxes and keep the stored season's shoes in them (boot boxes will accomodate 2-3 pairs of sandals and I have more sandals than boots). I store them on those high shelves or other spots in the closet that are pain to get to on a regular basis.

Help me out! Why, why, why do people like to keep their shoes and boots in boxes? I just don’t see the practical point. What am I missing?

I just use rolled newspapers. They do the job just fine. My slouch boots don't stand on their own for some reason (with the newspaper in them, that is). I have to just lay them on the side or prop them up against something to keep them from falling.

This is my first year owning tall boots I love, so I don't have alot of experience, but... I also use rolled up magazines (the thicker the better) to keep the boots upright, and I line them up on the shelves inside my closet. I plan to buy some plastic boot boxes and store them in those under my bed come summer. I will leave the magazines in them as well to help maintain the shape.

I let mine lie flat in large flat clear plastic boxes that slide under the bed. They are easy to get to and stay free of dust. I have 2 pr of brown tall boots in one box and 2 pr. black in another. Ankle boots can stand upright in a third box.

I use old magazines to keep my boots standing up. Just roll the magazine and slide it down into the boot. I like to keep my shoes and boots where I can see them and get to them easily. My boot collection (well, part of it anyway) is standing on the top of an armoire in my bedroom. They are so colorful, I see them as art.

How do you store your tall boots?

Normally I keep them in their original boxes on the top shelf of my closet. However, this is inconvenient. I can't easily see what I have, and since I'm short, I frequently end up toppling boxes all over my head. Inevitably I get lazy and leave my boots all over the floor instead of putting them away.

Today I took them out of their boxes, stuffed them so they'd stand up, and lined them up on the shelf. Now I can see what I have, and I'm hoping it makes it easier to reach for a pair and put them back later.

However, I am wondering if this is the best idea? Especially when I consider dust. In the winter they get moved around often enough dust isn't an issue, but if I keep them there all summer?

What do you think? (I haven't thrown the original boxes out yet)

Also, for the last month I tried having them lined up on the floor of the closet, but there is so little room, and it's dark there, they quickly became a giant mess. So that did not work.
