I like the 2nd pair (block heel)! I say go for it - and try to find a code with free returns in case they don't work.

Thanks all! It seems like there is a lot of support for the
“fun boot” approach, and in particular, for navy suede – a colorway I am now
fully obsessed with. I’m not going to order these exact boots
right now, but when I can purchase a pair, this is the kind of boot I will be
getting. Thanks for your help.

AndiB, The Cat, Rachylou, Chouette: Yes: the lower block
heel is a much better bet. I think I have to get a bit used to the rounder toe
idea, but the heel is the big seller here.

Approprio: This is not the year for a big investment
purchase bootwise, although I love those Aquitalias.

JAileen: Those Borns are gorgeous!

Lisap, if you jump for anything like this, please post
pictures. I want to know how you style them.

Janet: I think boots like this would help me get the HH dress
out of the closet more often.

Sal: You’re right that I have to be careful about comfort if
buying at the cheaper end.

Smittie: Thanks for checking the other pictures of the toe
and confirming it’s acceptable. :)

Angie: You are absolutely right about calf circumference. I
am one of the thinner-calf people and it could be an issue. Laura, thanks for chiming in. That news
about CS is not great. :(

I like the lower heeled red ones.
I think stability is key, and the higher ones look a little rickety.
I took a look at some other pictures of the lower-heeled ones and the toe looks just pointy enough.

Unfortunately Boden customer service can't tell you what the calf circumference is. I tried calling and using the online chat.

The chat rep said he'd contact a "clothing technician" and get back to me, but they never do, except to advise me to just buy it and send it back if it doesn't fit. Very frustrating, when I already know that 90% of what's being sold *won't* fit.

Viv, have you measured your calf circumference to make sure they fit? If they measure up and you can manage the heel height - give them a whirl.

I added some knee high suede (brown) boots at the end of our winter - I had to have a gusset put in the back where my calves are chunky! I have really enjoyed wearing them with dresses and skirts- might get one more wear in if I am lucky as it is spring but soon they will be too hot. Mine were on sale and then I had the cobbler cost as well but all up less than $200 NZD which is a good deal here.

I think given they won't be a daily item you can get away with a cheaper pair - as long as they are comfortable. If you have the dresses you instantly have the outfits anyway. I could also see these with wide crops or culottes or an A line skirt, or with a shift or sheath dress as well even with a bit of a gap. I have worn mine with a couple of knee length winter dresses with a small gap and felt fine about it - it is a different look to the 70s inspired one on the blog but in my opinion still a good one. I am not so sure about over jeans or leggings - I think a chunkier boot often works better in that instance.

I think you should really consider these. As AndiB said, the fit in the calves will very likely be excellent due to the stretchy material and they are totally on trend. I like both, but would go for the lower heel myself. I have become a bootie devotee as well, despite the fact that I have accumulated 5 or even 6 pairs of knee-highs that I can still wear (classic models) but have neglected for the bootie trend.

I like the lower block heel, and can see how navy boots would look fantastic with the dresses you already own. I'm still loving that Haute Hippie dress and wish I'd at least tried it before it sold out.

I like your reasoning here - vis a vis a fun inexpensive boot vs something more $$. I'm in the same boot - not really any budget to speak of at the moment, and nor do I care to spend any $ I do have on something that I'm not sure how I'll wear yet. I like both colours and both styles for you - I'm no help. I think I want these too !

The first one would be too tall for me. I would end up trying to avoid wearing them. I bought Born Avala boots in dark blue. They have a two inch heel and a squared off toe.

But they might be too big at the top. Just because I have big feet, manufacturers seem to think I have the calves of a very tall woman. :(

I've been on the hunt for tall boots too, a more refined one than my current couple of pairs. I wish the pointy toed version came in the block heel! That is exactly what I'm looking for. I just don't want a 3-inch heel. but not sure about the round toe. i do like these, and might just have to compromise... I've spent hours scouring Zappo's and Nordies for a lower heel but more pointed toe/refined tall boot. To no avail. And the thing I might like about non-leather is that it might form fit my calves better than leather.

I like the longer flowy dress and tall boot outfit Angie wrote about today, although it's likely to be a very occasional outfit for me because of my typical style and the winter weather in Portland (cold, damp, snowy). Also, I would need to buy tall boots, and I have no real budget to speak of right now. So I'm just play-shopping. I do have two dresses that would fit the bill (see below).

Still, I did love the look of the Boden boots in the first picture in the blog post and I wonder if they might be an answer for me this season because they are quite inexpensive. They are "stretch" boots, which seems to be code for synthetic material. With the discount, they are $120. What are your thoughts about these (in either berry or navy)? They come with a higher heel and pointy toe, and a lower heel and round toe. I suppose I am wondering if it might make sense to purchase a less expensive "fun" boot rather than invest, since I haven't worn tall boots in several years and am a bootie devotee.
