K. Period. on "boot fit ?"

I agree with Ginger and La Pedestrienne. I think it just has to do with what kind of a look you are wanting and what you find appealing.

The looseness of these boots strikes me as very boho. To my eye, loose boots look best when contrasted or anchored with a fitted ankle, and both these pics show a more fitted ankle. The look isn't appealing to me personally because I tend toward tailored, classic looks, not boho. But I could see others wearing those shapes quite happily--in fact I regularly see young college gals wearing this combo/shape.

Personal preference plays a big part in what we like and don't like since we all have our own proportion and flattery goals. So Alaskagirl, for example, does not like the look at all on herself (and calls it a flowerpot) because she isn't fond of highlighting her slim ankles alone. But you'll notice that she does love wearing knee high stompy boots, which even though they are bulky do not focus the visual weight just on her ankles. So the stompy boots fit within her proportion and flattery parameters. On the forum, some members use flowerpot as a shorthand way to describe a particular fit, usually where a person's style isn't in sync with the looser boot's feel.

I think the biggest factor is the overall style. Agreeing with La Pedestrienne, it's most problematic with refined or tailored looks. Deliberate FPE looks pretty good with casual/relaxed outfits like this. The height of the shaft and the cut of the pant/legging also play into it. I find it rather flattering as an ankle/calf slimming effect. Of course, that depends on having a slim fit in the pants/leggings/tights. I don't like the first one so much... but I also really don't care for those boots, period!

In the pictures you posted, I think it's more obvious in the second one because the shaft is both lower and wider. But I agree with La Pedestrienne that it's more problematic with sleeker boots than either of these. I don't actually mind the effect in a casual or boho boot like those shown here.

I don't really mind flower pot effect on taller shafts. So the first pic looks ok to me, although I'd probably wear it with shorter jeans. The second looks too gaped to me because the shaft is lower. For me, it has something to do with the fact that FPE on a lower shaft tends to make the whole shoe look like it is too big, whereas on a taller shaft the foot part of the boot looks fine so it's more obvious that the wide shaft is intentional. On me, this difference is very obvious because I also have extremely low volume feet and low insteps, and you can basically see that the gaping extends all the way to my feet.

Huh, and I would say the first pair looks silly to me because the cuff-rolling is so obviously intentional and showcases the gap.

On my screen the second looks like dark rinse jeans, not black, so maybe that helps. Honestly, for me, a more rugged/chunky style like a harness boot is almost always going to have some gap at the ankle -- but with harness boots, engineer boots, etc, you're not usually going for an uber-polished look.

Where I think it becomes more problematic is with boots (or outfits) that are clearly intended to be sleeker and more refined, which neither of these are.

For me, both of the posted pics are borderline. The higher shaft of the first one helps. I would prefer for the second to be low-contrast (black booties instead of brown with black leggings).

How big does the gap have to be for you folks to call it "flower pot" effect? I find all sorts of gap spaces on pinterest and blogs. all are considered fine, I assume, or they would not be posted there. Some of my boots are like the photos below, and I am continuing to wear them, as I do not adhere to this flower pot concept.
