I don't know if you can tell from the picture, or what the story is with these particular boots, but my observation with many Frye boots and shoes is that their grey colors tend to run on the warm side, i.e. they are a little more brown/taupe.

I definitely had to size down with my fryes. I could not deal with the heal slippage in the veronica style and returned them, but supposedly that goes away once they are broken in. I did buy a pair of tall Melissa harness that fit like a glove because of the zipper. I would definitely try them from a retailer who accepts returns because of fit/slip issue.

Thank you for the visual, Diana. I really like the high contrast too.

thimblelina, I think I'm leaning toward bookending my hair too. The question now is slate (on sale) or camel (might be too orange?). I'm a little afraid of the addictive qualities

I think I'll order the camel ones from Shopbop to try first. It seems they have free shipping and returns to/from Canada (unheard of!) The slate ones at the local retailer are final sale so I might try those if the camel ones don't work out.

Now just to decide size 6 or 6.5 ...

My daughter & I faced this dilemma when we ordered her first pair of Fryes. So many choices! Where to begin? We decided on book ending her hair. Because after your first Fryes... there's your second... your fifth... your dozenth... hahaha. Gateway drug fo sure!!

I don't think you can go wrong with either color. FWIW I have these in black (but I have black hair) and I love them. I actually wear them with bare legs a lot and I like the high contrast. (See the picture below, which is pretty much my favorite way to wear them.)

My heels slip like crazy in mine but I am used to it so it doesn't bother me. I have really low volume feet and can kick these off easily without using my hands. I do add a 3/4 length orthotic (need it for the arch support anyway) which helps somewhat.

I think Frye boots in different colours might fit differently. I had on a distressed brown pair yesterday and was flopping around in my regular size but the black didn't feel as roomy. I have a high volume foot so I like to air on the side of roomy.

bj1111, your foot sounds exactly like mine. I also have a high instep and usually can't get pull on boots on - these work, which is amazing!

kelly girl, don't shut up! Your info and pictures are invaluable. It's so hard when you have to order online so all information, experiences and opinions help!

I have Veronica's in full length in a full size up from my regular. I wear costco cushioned gym socks and I can wear these all the way to the apocalypse. I have a wide fore foot and a narrow heel shaped so I can't wear d'orsays and keep them on.

Okay, I'm going to shut up after this but I have narrow heels and found the Veronica slouch extremely comfortable. Maybe I'm used to heel slippage? IDK but they are the most comfortable boots that I own. I also wear the Sam Edelman Cruz (like Jackiec) and they are great. Maybe my feet are higher volume than Jackie (along with the rest of me--lol!)

Jackie, is it the heel slippage that's the problem or other things too? Did you get them in your regular size? I find them comfortable - more so than other Fryes but there is heel slippage. I'm thinking of sizing down but the toes are tight.

Ooh totally up to you and your tastes. I have the exact ones in black, and have had them for a couple of years. I needed a versatile black boot and they fit the bill. Having said that, I'd love those lighter ones too :)

Just a heads up, I had a heck of a time breaking mine in, and do at the beginning of each season. They haven't turned into those super-comfy wear-all-day boots that some people describe them as. My heels slip about in them and I have yet to find a good solution. I'm also in Canada, so had these shipped to the border, ripped off the tags, and couldn't return them. Not sure I'd reorder, to be perfectly honest. However, I do reach for them time and time again when the weather is off, and I'm dashing out the door. I just don't like to wear them for long periods of walking.

kelly girl, good point about the warmer vs cooler colours. I tend more toward cooler colours in clothes. I'm afraid the camel will read too orange, which is why I'm shy about the cognac this season. I have sand coloured Uggs which are warmer than the taupe suede Pettys I have too and like both equally. I think my hair highlights have a bit of warmth to them. If I knew the slate shorties would look almost exactly like yours, I'd jump in a heartbeat!

I agonized over the color too. I already had black boots though and wanted something different. Good question about the variation. I'm sure there's some but I would think Frye would keep it to a minimum. The tan color looks warmer on my monitor. The slate is cooler and reads taupe-ish grey.

Yes, I understand. I haven't had boots that bookend my hair yet, but I'm searching for a pair. I had oxfords that bookended and absolutely loved them because they always worked, no matter what I wore. Perhaps low contrast is a bigger priority with mid high boots though. Light colored ankle booties or knee high boots might be easier to wear.

Jenny H, I do have lighter hair so I do like bookending with lighter footwear. I also prefer lighter looks in general but often default to darker bottoms for figure flattery and practicality. This is why I'm often looking for ways to lighten it up. I do have other boots - tall black, black booties, taupe booties, sand short Uggs, grey Ugg cardis.

JayS, I'm looking for versatility too. I wear a lot of skinnies and leggings in winter. I don't love ankle boots with these silhouettes as I feel a bit like an ice cream cone. I feel the Shorties, like your Sweeties (these names!), would give me the heft on the bottom I'm looking for. I imagine wearing them a lot so want them to work in many applications.

Thank you, kelly girl, for the IRL photos of the slate - they are gorgeous (and on sale from a local retailer!)! I wonder how much variation in colour there is from boot to boot?

I think the tan will be great with your hair color! Boots that bookend the haircolor work with everything, in my opinion. If leg lengthening is a priority black is probably better though.

I like antique burnished slate and black the best and don't think you could go wrong with either. The slate is a gorgeous color--I bought them last year and loved them. I like that they offer a little contrast to my outfits. I have dark hair but someone mentioned that my face actually provides enough bookending to make the wearable with almost anything.

Here's a link to a pretty true picture of the colorhttp://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ca-is-here andhttp://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-the-usual

I would go with the darker color for precisely the reason you mentioned. I have the Aquatalia Sweetie boot in black which is close to the shaft height of the Fryes you are considering. I was amazed recently on a trip to San Francisco that they were the only footwear that I wore. Amazingly versatile!
I don't think I would have reached for a lighter color as often. My 2 cents...

I would share your dilemma! Do you have other boots? Most of my boots are black since I tend to wear dark bottoms and I like to elongate my legs. But I do enjoy having some lighter shoes/boots too. Another thing to consider is your hair color. If you have lighter hair, the lighter boots could serve as bookends to your hair.

I'm considering investing in my first pair of Fryes. After trying on many styles I've settled on the Veronica Shorties. I like the loose higher shaft for tucking in leggings and skinnies. My dilemma is colour. I love light coloured shoes but also love the leg lengthening (and edginess) of black as most of my bottoms are dark in fall and winter.

What colour do you think I should get? I should also say I'm in Canada and can't find most colours in store so I'll be relying on pictures online for colour representation and taking my chances with online ordering.

I can't do finds on my iPad and my husband is hogging the laptop right now :)
