My son just turned 14 and I can totally relate ! I agree with Diary of a Wimpy kid. My son loved it and it is a comical look at this age in a way that is not minimizing of what they are going through. The following is a good book too:

http://www.amazon.com/American....._14_5?ie=U...

My son did the "Oh, mom ! " when I gave it to him, but I would catch him in his room reading it. Another great source is to ask your pediatrician for recommendation. That is how we learned of this book.

For you, I recommend, Get Out of my Life; but First, Could you Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall :

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb.....ds=get+out...

Our school Social Worker recommends it to all parents starting in 6th grade. : )

Blargh, I'm in the same situation with a grumpy, moody, but still needy 12 year old who is also in the middle of getting braces. He is obsessed with Harry Potter and playing competitive basketball (DH is his coach) is also really good for him.

I second the Wimpy Kid recommendation, and Dave Barry and Carl Hiassen both have written really good books for this age. For pure silliness, my son also love to read and reread the Big Nate comics.

I don't know if your child is this way, but my son still wants me to snuggle before bed and will talk most easily after the lights are out (probably in an effort to avoid sleeping). As exhausted as I am, I take the time to listen in those moments when he'll often share something I wouldn't otherwise hear.

You're not alone!

Just for a bit of a laugh: Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney. They'e very funny even if you're not a teenage boy, I think everyone in my family has read them even though they belong to both of my brothers. They're also good for people who are usually not reading much - I'm a quick reader and finished them in quite a short time. I was always a bit sad when I reached the end. They might not touch any of the problems your DS has, I don't know. But they're a nice read in any case.

I work in publishing as a sales rep - and have several really strong children's and YA lines that have books that you might like. I am happy to help if you want to PM me with more details - regarding what it is that he's struggling with, what kinds of things he does enjoy etc, and if he is a reader himself. I can give you some specific titles to look for. I understand these struggles all too well.

I don't know of any books, but I would strongly suggest getting a referral from his pediatrician for a good counselor. He probably has a lot of confusing emotions bottled up inside that some counseling could help him work through. The therapist might want to recommend some reading after your son is evaluated.

My DS 12 is going through puberty. Aside from physical changes (which I'm letting my DH to deal with it), the boy is going through emotional turmoil. He is always tired, has no motivation for much of anything. He is struggling with some other issues which is not helping.

Is there any good book to help the youngster along? Something helps him realize what he is going through is normal and not just him. I trust you guys way more than Amazon reviews. . TIA.
