Second Greyscale's comment. I also understand cotton is far from the pure and innocent fabric it portrays to be.

I always found rayon to be so finicky that I try to avoid it. This is just another reason. Thanks!

Gaylene, that's a great point. And we don't usually get much info on what treatments have been added. I know a lot of cotton is treated with formaldehyde to make it wrinkle less, but that's never marked on the label. Plus, cotton on its own does have a pretty substantial environmental impact. It's so hard to know the whole picture.

I also heard the interview; it's a sobering reminder that choosing what we put in our wardrobe can have unexpected, and sometimes deadly, consequences for others. I might be put off by pills on my sweater, but the knowledge that the same garment could be a health risk for another puts my choice into a whole different context.

To be fair, it is probably important to distinguish between different types of manufacturing processes before and after garments are created, and between closely related fibers, before making a decision to eliminate them from our wardrobes. While choosing a "natural", organic cotton might seem like a better alternative, the chemical and physical treatments applied to the fiber as it is transformed into fabric and then into a finished garment can quickly negate any "ethical" benefits.

Apropos Angie's recent post about viscose and rayon, I thought this short summary of Fake Silk: The Lethal History of Viscose Rayon might be interest. I heard the author interviewed yesterday, and learned a lot about the dangers the manufacturing process posed, and continues to poses, to factory workers.
