It seems to me that for summer, you could try some more accessories? Beady necklaces, a straw hat or crocheted hairband, a bag or shoes with fringe... maybe a braided belt or bracelets...

Thanks Sal and Rachylou! Relaxing into this style seems to work for me much better than trying to up my polish quotient.

Still haven’t tried on the other outfits. Seems to be in a depressive phase again, so need to use energy to gsd. But hearing from you guys gives me a little pep, so thanks.

Looking at your tops I think any of them along with your hair are boho. Loose woven and pattern, white - I think you are there!

Leather slides or flat sandals - maybe a straw hat.

Thanks, Zaeobi! Playing up certain certain elements of style, *not* wearing someone else’s culture, are what boho is about for me.

Jenn, “Lagen” is the word for layers. I was intrigued by your comment on the blog post that no matter what you put on, you seem to wear things in a boho way. Can you explain how one wears non-boho items in a boho way?

La’Abielle and ST, I’m not going to get to try in outfits on the other thread today, but I’m working on the side braid.

Sarah, thanks for the suggestions. I want to try them, with the others, but today is not the day

A little late to the party, but just wanted to echo other people's thoughts that the softness of your style seems to skew more Boho to my eyes already.

Thanks L’Abielle. Those are great ways to keep the texture but get it out of my face. I’ve only successfully done a braid to one side once, because when I pull hair over from the other side, that section of the braid is shorter. I’ll have to play around with sectioning the hair differently.

I haven’t tried the outfits on the other thread yet, though I’ve gotten some suggestions. Will do it when my son is out of the house tomorrow.

Not that I have much current experience with boho, just my first run-in with it in the 70s when that's all we wore, but here is my 2 cents worth.

Your great boho accessory is your hair. Do it right, and you only need one boho clothing item (I love that long dress in the other thread). I mean, I don't think you could mix that item with anything too preppy or techno, but still.

So. My suggestions:
1. A loose braid or milkmaid braids. Starting low down, or asymmetrical/to one side.
2. The Juliet thing where you take a bit from each temple, twist or braid them, and join them at the back of your head.
3. Put it all in tiny braids then when you let it out you will have body along with tiny waves. Kind of like early Sarah Jessica Parker, before SITC, when she was in that lawyer show.

(From someone who doesn't really do jewelry. But your hair as the boho accessory will be visible from across the room.)

Awesome Sarah08. Thanks! I do hope to have a different coat next winter; right now the only non-technical winter coats I have are the long navy wool coat and the espresso bomber jacket. The slides are new since I took pix 3-5. I’ll try them with that top & shorts, and will see if I have a necklace like you describe. I’m looking forward to what pairings/outfit ideas you come up with in the newer post too. Maybe I shouldn’t have split the items between two posts. I know Angie & people around here generally prefer breaking things up into more posts than I like, so that’s what I was trying to do.

Fashintern, I'll comment on your new thread too but hope it's ok if I post these ideas here (not sure how "theoretical" they are) since they refer to the pics in your initial post.

I agree that photo 1 is a great example of "your" boho. What I see: pattern mixing, lots of texture, jewel tones, most of the outfit has fairly streamlined shapes (the top and skirt), with ONE more dramatic piece (the vest that is a bit oversized with the ruffly -- not exactly what I mean but you get it -- edges).

Photo 2: I agree with Sal's comment that a wool or faux fur coat might more easily give a boho vibe than the puffer. But if you want to stick with the puffer, La Ped once posted about a Japanese fashion subculture called Yama girls (I think this is right! you cannot imagine the bizarre Google contortions I went through to refresh my memory) who combine items in technical fabrics (e.g., puffer) with more "heritage" outdoor gear (plaid lumberjack shirts, Nordic sweaters) and I think that's a variety of boho. So, with that look in mind, I'd swap the striped scarf out for something woven, maybe slightly voluminous, with a more organic pattern (paisley, dark floral, etc.). And I think a trick to achieve that ragamuffin look without a bunch of fussiness is pattern mixing your outdoor accessories -- so with the paisley scarf wear a fair isle or Nordic patterned toque in similar colors.

Photo 3-5: I like the shorts at the longer length, but if you don't you could just cut off the hem to get them to where they would be with one turn-up. That would make them a bit more casual but I think still presentable. I like the top a lot. To make the outfit a bit more intentional, you could try semi-tucking the top (like in Runcarla's photo) and adding a belt. Swap the oxfords out for your slides. (I think the oxfords are unlikely to read "boho" unless you are wearing them to "tone down" a very, very floaty dress.) Maybe a piece of wooden or abalone jewelry.

I know you may not have all these items and are not shopping now, but just some ideas that might stimulate your thinking.

From your description of the "cutest little ragamuffins," I wonder if the look you're seeing on the streets isn't closer to lagenlook than boho? If so, perhaps a Pinterest search on that term will give you some more imagery to work with.

Firecracker, Ophelia, Runcarla, Sal, Shevia, Rachylou, Synne, Maine Lady, kkards, and others who already see my style as boho, boho-adjacent, or having elements of boho, can you help me play that up by suggesting outfits for me to try on?
The finds on this post are things I think lean that way. On my other post are photos of all my shorts, some skirts that I think could be worn in a boho way, and some tops and toppers that I also think could work for this style, but I have difficulty matching up with anything else I own.
Do you see any combos I could try to maximize the tendency towards this style that you already see?

Hmmm...FashIntern, interesting, I’ve always seen your style as somewhere on the academic/librarian boho spectrum ...which is probably a little different from what your describing when you talked about the “ragamuffins”. Not good as putting this in words, so i hope it comes out as i mean it...for me, the boho of the ragamuffins is more studied and practiced, where as the your “brand” of boho is more organic and “it is what it is”. Hope that makes sense

Maine Lady, yes, that’s it! The extra fabric can be in the way and I like to move. Besides that, it can just look overpowering. I like details and finish, but not too much look. That’s why I prefer quirk that lurks instead of jumping out at you.

The easiest way to boho up your Summer style is a peasant skirt or a boho dress. I have a tiered maxi skirt and some summer boho dresses that are brilliant to wear on a hot summers day.

Synne, Woodstock/boho is an interesting distinction! I don’t want my stuff dragging in the mud (Woodstock) and too much fabric makes me cranky, but if I can get the right drape....sigh.....that’s probably the magic piece I’m looking for.

Runcarla, how do I keep that top from bunching up? I like the idea of that top and it has just the right amount of embroidery for me, but it simply will not flow gracefully.

Sal, thanks for the lists! Those are actionable, in a good way. Also, you’ve reminded me of this white skirt that I’ll take photos of in a minute.

Joy, when I’m back to buying, I will keep that in mind as I look at bottoms. I have enough shorts—think I have 8 pairs here.

Phoebe, I’ll have to raid my jewelry stash more often. I like the idea of floral colors—that might be my summer alternative to the berry shades I wear in cool weather.

Shevia and RL, at times I reach too hard for the boho. Something that looks really appealing online is just too much when I put it on. I want the fun without the fuss.

Stick around for pix!

Id say your style is currently more Woodstock than boho Not that far away, but maybe some tweaks can make it more boho-esque. You already have lots of natural fibers, textures. Maybe aim for longer cuts and lines, more drapey and dramatic flow? Following with interest!

I second Joy. You do already have a natural inclination towards boho, I agree

There is a strong boho component to your look naturally - your hair, mixed prints and so on. I think go with the flow and your boho side will naturally develop.

Brooklyn summarized the components pretty well I think. There's a lot of "natural" in her description and for summer you could add some flower colors to the earth ones or substitute altogether.

Heavy ornamentation in hot weather could be strands of lightweight beads or something on a cord.

Since you have some tops, you might work on your bottoms. I would either get shorts without those slits or not wear shorts at all. Look for long slightly full skirts or culottes one or two summer weight and one or two wool o es for winter. Find a couple of neutral colors that will go with your tops. They need not be earth tones. Flat black or burgundy or forest green, blue denim or pale grey., maybe a small pattern.

I would see that influence already.... I think some of your best looks have this flavour - paisley, great flat boots.

for me the things that work in summer are
- loose muslin or linen shirts with simple shorts
- flat tan leather sandals and a bag
- straw hat (not too structured)
- potentially jewelry
- longer skirts or dresses

In winter
- potentially tunic and boots with a scarf or dress and boots with a scarf
- floppy hats
- the right scarves and patterns
- wool or faux fur rather than technical coats such as puffers

Muslin tops with embroidery like #3-5 of your pics is the epitome of boho. Like Ophelia said, you’re already there. (See my summer boho outfit in the photo below - small print gauze top with macrame inserts, hand tooled and painted sandals, frizzy/curly hair)
