Mainelady- pulling anywhere is the hardest part of this look. The sweater must be just right w fabrication and cut and then not pull. Definitely a hewi!!
Brooklyn - the two sweaters I bought feel like the thinnest cotton. Very light. Unless you don’t wear long sleeves I think weightwise you’d be fine. True merino would be too warm. Yes!! I’ve been on waistcoat hunt for years. Same my waistcoats from the 90’s the fabric is starting to shatter. I bought a Rachel Zoe fitted leather vest that your amazing Inge found for me. Buttons are black and gold. I don’t wear much gold and it’s very fitted so it’s part of my LeSmoking capsule. I would love several fitted brocade vests. I will let you know if I find anything and please let me know if you do. This is a very long standing hewi for me me

I am small busted, but always warm. So this look is not for me.

But I am soooo hoping that (sleeveless) vests/waistcoats will come back. I had some beautiful brocade versions in the 90s and I am now sorry I parted with them. Similar look with a jacket. Delish!

I think the look is polished, especially under a blazer. Once upon a time it wore a thin cardi as you describe. I would wear it again if I found a cardi that covered my bust, without pulling and wasn’t then too large around the waist.

Kate - that’s another great idea. I have the theory Wendell mock turtleneck which is sleeveless. That’s an awesome way to extend its utility into the winter!! Will try thst next!!

I have a few thin, V-neck merino sweaters and wear them over fitted sleeveless turtleneck tees & sweaters. As a member of the small busted, always cold cohort, my goal is to have my neck and upper chest covered when fall finally shows up.

TG - LOL and if it's not "in"? I'm wearing the Everlane with came today under the JP fleece long jacket from last years NAS. Happy as a clam. I'm just happy that a couple of these sweaters are available again. I had missed them. Now if I can find the perfect one to wear with buttons front but can be flipped to the back, that would be awesome!!

I like it and would wear it with the right pieces. In the 90s I did wear versions of this. With real (i.e. woven waistcoats, and with lightweight cardigans.) I also had a lovely silk-merino blend cardigan with a round neck that I wore in a similar way. The glow of the silk was so beautiful and the thing wore like iron. I was still wearing it in 2006!

Huh! I inherited a tight v neck cardigan and have been wondering whether to keep it. (It’s from Talbots, maybe they would be a place for you to check for this style in future.). Maybe I’ll try your idea- only gotta have a layer under my armpit, so it will be v-neck tee, then cami, then jacket. I think wool touching armpit is a gross feeling!

Angie - Interesting. I did not wear or remember this look in the 90’s. I found a JCrew cropped bracelet sleeve v neck about 2010. I found it incredibly useful and wore it threadbare. I could never replace it. Interesting that it dates from my favorite fashion decade.
Ummlila- yes tiny tatas do well in layers!! Every body type has its advantages!!

"for the flat chested always cold group to embrace. There are not enough layers in the universe for me." -- so me. And yes, I like thin merino sweaters over camis for exactly this reason.

NICE. And another '90s look. We might have to call you Queen '90s, Gryffin. Wave to La Ped. LOVE the lacey cami.

I don't wear cardigans, but enjoy a short fitted buttoned cardi over a flared skirt.

Kkards- I know everything old is new again. It was only out for me because I could not find the right pieces. It’s great for warmth without bulk.
Dana - practical and comfortable is always on trend for me!! But I like pieces that can be worn in different ways. I’m not creative so this is particularly easy.
Bijou - yes!! I had a d&g vesi in finds all last year. I don’t know why they are so difficult to find. I like ones that can be worn closed on their own. Yes easier for us petite busted girls!! I found a leather Rachel Zoe vest but it has gold hardware so gets Special wear only to part of my edgy Les smoking capsule
Lisa - is think this is easier for the flat chested always cold group to embrace. There are not enough layers in the universe for me. But you wear gorgeous architectural tops so elegant and edgy. A topper would kill the look. So perfect for you!!

I don't, but it's a great look on the model. It would be a few too many layers under a blazer for my comfort zone and getting the fit you described would be next to impossible on my body .

Gryffin, I don't do this, but I love the idea of it very much. Underneath a blazer, they would look like you are wearing a vest, which is a look that I love. A beautiful vest is a HEWI for me, but they just have not been present in retail for many years, this Dolce and Gabana vest is a "in my dreams" purchase - it is disappointing that only high end designers are making them at the moment.

As someone with a small bust, this would definitely work on me. I love the camisole that you layer these v-neck cardigans over. Both cardigans are lovely, so I hope they work for you. Were you able to get the EF one before it vanished, I hope so as it looks beautifully cut.

I think it's a cute look. I did it about 10 years ago. I'm running much warmer now; our winters have been more mild lately; and I don't think I'm wearing as many blazers as a whole (but looking for some new ones.) I say do it! Maybe you'll start a big new trend!

I have a love of a very fitted, very thin, vee neck cardigan which can be layered over a cami or tank and worn under a blazer. The sweater needs to be thin and very fitted for my taste but a perfect enough fit that it is worn buttoned without any evidence of pulling, so I get that weskit look. They have been a HEWI for the last 5 years. I just found two, the EF cotton/cashmere went on flash sale and then vanished. I just bought the everlane, I'd have preferred a slightly more cropped fit but it's quite nice and means, read description to be worn buttoned as a top. Doesn't anyone else do this?
