It does help as a guideline. I *try* not to get too hung up on it. Only recently have I been daring to flout some of the rules for those of us with significant hips and thighs. Some days I'm just plain sick of worrying about whether something makes my hips look big, and i just say "f*** it, I'm going to wear what I feel like wearing because I think it's cool, and flattery be damned."

There are times I wonder if I really do have a good grip on my body type, as sometimes when I look at photos I think I look just fine and hourglassy. Other times I cringe at the size of my lower half. I've been struggling with this ever since I was a teen, but I suppose a lot of us sometimes wish we had the opposite of what we do: blue eyes instead of brown, curly hair vs, straight, curvy bodies rather than straight ones.

Bottom line, I think we're all working to celebrate what we have and present it in the best way possible!

KL, Sarah, Rute, AG, Harmonica, Janet, Suz, and Marley -

Thanks so much for weighing on my body type. I'm sorry about sounding like an insensitive whiner - I'm usually pretty good about embracing what I have, enjoying it, and not needing to find "redeeming" features in my appearance. I don't know what came over me.

Una - LOL, I think I had the exact same reaction to my body when I looked in the mirror, especially the "straight from the ribcage to the hips, busty, with no booty" parts. I'm glad you think it's not so bad IRL.

I'm also hearing what you all say about not getting hung up on body type - and I won't - but having a rough guide does help with understanding why some clothes will just not work me. So good if you are closet editing, no?

I also immediately thought IT upon seeing the pics.

Be proud! My big pear hips and thighs envy your slim ones!

Hmm, you look a bit like me... I'm an IT with secondary rectangle tendencies. I'd be an apple if side view counted. I've got wide shoulders, no waist, am straight from the ribcage to the hips, and a bit busty with no booty. Yuck, how awful that sounds, but it's not as bad IRL.

IT vs rectangle has to do with your shoulder width relative to your hip width (rather than how busty you are) - which is hard to tell from the pics. But, ITs and rectangles dress pretty similarly, so it may not matter that much.

Anyway, as unredeeming as it sounds, welcome to the rectangle/apple club! It's not so bad : ). That's what figuring out your body type is all about - embracing the styles that work for you.

I'd say IT with apple tendencies too--I'm a rectangle with apple tendencies, and I have slightly narrower shoulders and a small bust. It's not the easiest figure to work toward an hourglass ideal, but FAR from unredeemed!

Suz and Marley, thank you!

You might be right - I am a little chesty for my frame, so I might be more IT than rectangle. I hear you about the camera, and will work on getting better pics. I dont have a good timer position for the camera right now.

Hmmm . . . my best guess would be that you are an IT with apple tendencies - but, in order to really be able to tell, we'd need to see you with your arms down to your side (I think!) Also, remember - once you've IDed your body-type, DON'T get hung up on the label! Its just a tool to use to figure out what proportions would look most flattering on you!

First off, you are gorgeous.

Second, you might be correct with the body type ID. But it also looks as if you have IT tendencies and might be more IT than rectangle. It's a bit tough to say because of your need to hold the camera for the pics.

Would you say I'm a rectangle with secondary apple tendencies?

Is that as unredeeming as it sounds? Help.
